T lk fr them, scientists used the R/V Falkr (t) — a research ship — n research trips in the Suthern Ocean earlier this year. They used a special remte-cntrlled underwater machine t explre the sea flr. The machine, called SuBastian, went deep belw the surface, tk pictures and vides, and cllected samples (样品). By the end f the secnd trip, the team had cllected almst 2,000 animal samples.
Since then, the scientists have been studying the animals they cllected, and wrking t designate them. In sme cases, they’re using the animals’ DNA t help decide their species. S far, the researchers have discvered 30 new species.
One f the mst unusual is a meat-eating sea spnge with a ball-like shape. Sea spnges are animals that usually eat by letting water g thrugh their bdy and keeping what can be eaten. N ne wants t press students with technlgy thrughut the day and then have them g hme and use mre technlgy.
