Bruce, an internatinal student frm Ghana, has undertaken an inspiring jurney

pursuing a PhD in Aerspace Science and Technlgy at Nrthwestern Plytechnical
University in Xi’an, he is deeply invlved in research n prpellant cmbustin(推进

Bruce’s fascinatin with aerspace began in his yuth. Grwing up in Ghana, he
was attracted by the Chinese classic “Jurney t the West,” which was ften bradcast
n natinal televisin. “I lve Sun Wukng, because even thugh he has weaknesses,
he still tries t give his best self,” Bruce said.
This inspiratin led him t chse a specialized university in Ghana that ffered
aerspace majrs. After earning his Bachelr f Science degree, Bruce set his sights
n China t further his studies. In 2022, Bruce cmpleted his master’s degree at the
Beijing Institute f Technlgy. T cnduct mre research n prpellant cmbustin,
he mved t Xi’an t pursue a PhD at the Schl f Aerspace Science and
Technlgy at Nrthwestern Plytechnical University. The pen experimental
envirnment and diverse academic activities there have bradened his hrizns.
“We d experiments that are really advanced in the develpment f the space
industry in China and the whle wrld,” said Bruce, adding that he values this
experience because it reflects a can-d attitude.
Bruce’s parents initially thught that studying aerspace was “unrealistic.”
Hwever, his experiences in China have strengthened his reslutin and increased his
cnfidence in China’s aerspace industry. Bruce said every time there’s a launch, he
will watch the entire vide.
During his study in China, Bruce has cnsistently achieved excellent grades and
received numerus hnrs. He attributes these t the cperatin and traditinal
friendship between China and Africa. As mre internatinal students jin the prgram,
Bruce began sharing the stry f China’s aerspace industry with a wider audience.
Bruce aims t cntribute t the advancement f rcket engine design thrugh his
studies and hard wrk. Lking ahead, he dreams f jining the Chinese space statin

It’s lng been ppular advice fr peple lking t lse weight t avid late night
eating. It’s n wnder, with a hst f research shwing that late night eating is linked
t greater bdy weight. But until nw, few studies have actually investigated why.
This is what a recent US study set ut t uncver.
Researchers had 16 participants fllw tw different meal schedules, each fr a
perid f six days ttal. The first grup had their meals early in the day with the last
meal cnsumed six hurs and 40 minutes befre bedtime. The secnd grup had their
daily meals fur hurs later. This meant they skipped breakfast and instead had lunch,
dinner and an evening meal. Their last meal was cnsumed nly tw and a half hurs
befre sleep. All the participants cnsumed an identical diet, and all f their meals
were equally spaced with arund fur hurs between them.
The researchers lked at three measures assciated with weight gain: the
influence f appetite, the impact f eating time n calries burned, and changes f fat
tissue. They fund that cmpared t an early eating pattern, late eating nt nly
increased feelings f hunger the fllwing day, it als increased the rate f “hunger”
hrmnes(荷尔蒙) in the bld. Late eating als caused a decrease in calries burned
the fllwing day. Fat tissue samples taken frm the participants als shwed the
increased fat strage. These results reveal that late eating culd lead t weight gain.
Given the study was nly cnducted n a limited number f participants and ver
a very shrt time, mre research will be needed t further understand whether these
changes are nly temprary, and what effects lng-term late night eating can have n
the weight gain mechanisms(机制).
Anyway this study adds t a grwing bdy f evidence shwing just hw
imprtant meal timing can be when it cmes t bdy weight. Therefre, peple wh
are watching their weight may want t quit the late night snacks and favr eating mst
f their meals earlier.
28. What d we knw abut the secnd grup in the study? _______
A. They had breakfast fur hurs later than nrmal.
B. Their meals differed frm thse f the first grup. C. They had daily meals rughly every furth hur. D. Their late night meal lasted fr abut 150 minutes.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut? _______
A. Discveries f the study. B. Causes f feeling hungry.
C. Measures f gaining weight. D. Advantages f dieting early.
30. Which f the fllwing is a result f late eating? _______
A. The slw intake f nutritin. B. The gradual fall f appetite.
C. The increase f bld pressure. D. The quick gathering f fat.
31. What is the drawback f the study? _______
A. A small number f participants and trial days.
B. The different times f eating in the tw grups.

C. Ignring mre measures related t weight gain.
D. Cllecting tissue samples nly frm vlunteers.

Electrnic waste, r e-waste, is the name given t ld electrnic devices that get
thrwn away. These can include ld cmputers, phnes, TVs, as well as all kinds f
ther electrnics.
As newer, mre advanced devices cme ut, huge amunts f electrnics are
thrwn away, instead f being recycled. They ften end up in landfills, where the
chemicals inside them may be a threat t the envirnment. Electrnics can
cntain hazardus materials, like lead r mercury(水银). If these materials get int the
grund r water, they cause serius prblems.
Mst electrnics require rare metals. These metals, like gld and cpper, must
be mined frm the earth. Often the mining prcess creates serius pllutin. In many
cases, these rare metals are harder t find. If mre e-waste was recycled, many rare
metals culd be taken frm ld electrnics instead f being mined.
Researchers are trying t make peple mre aware f the prblems f e-waste.
Recently, they studied a kind f e-waste that’s ften nt nticed because peple dn’t
cnsider the items t be electrnics. Researchers call this categry “invisible” e-waste.
The study revealed abut 1/6 f all e-waste is “invisible” and that the value f this
unseen waste is actually abut $9.5 billin a year.
Thugh it’s “invisible”, it’s certainly nt a small amunt. The invisible e-waste
weighs abut 19.8 billin punds. Researchers say that if this e-waste were piled int
40-tn trucks and the trucks were then lined up, the line f trucks wuld stretch fr
abut 3,500 miles.
The surprising categry leading the invisible e-waste grup was tys. Wrldwide,
rughly 7.3 billin electrnic tys are thrwn away each year. But the prblem is far
larger than just tys. The study als shws that ther everyday items like hme alarms,
smke alarms, pwer tls, and cmputer cables are als big surces f invisible
e-waste.
Researchers are hping that as mre peple becme aware f e-waste, they will
make much greater effrts t make sure electrnics get re-used r recycled.
32. What is the purpse f Paragraph 1? _______
A. T prpse a definitin. B. T present a cnclusin.
C. T blame wasteful habits. D. T aruse readers’ reflectin.
33. What des the underlined wrd “hazardus” in Paragraph 2 mean? _______
A. Invisible. B. Precius. C. Stable. D. Dangerus.
34. Why did researchers carry ut study n e-waste? _______
A. T btain much financial supprt.
B. T srt ut waste mre accurately.
C. T raise public awareness f e-waste.
D. T prmte the clsedwn f mining.
35. What can we knw abut the invisible e-waste? _______
A. It’s t tiny t be seen by the eyes. B. It’s massive and remains a threat.
6 / 10
C. It benefits waste-cllectrs mst. D. It cmes frm electrnic tys nly.
