Lithium batteries have becme the industry standard fr electrnic devices and electric vehicles and are expected t play a majr rle in the change t green pwer. But lithium is expensive, which has led multiple teams acrss the glbe t lk fr alternatives(替代物). In this new effrt, the research team lked fr ways t reduce the amunt f lithium used in batteries.
This wuld nrmally take a lng time because f the detailed apprach required. T reduce the wrklad and the time needed t prcess millins f alternatives, the researchers turned t AI. Nting that AI applicatins are gd at using massive amunts f data t learn hw t d things, the researchers designed ne that culd study millins f materials that might be added t a lithium battery t replace sme amunt f the lithium and test the results fr factrs such as stability and hw a battery using a given material wuld behave.
Using this apprach, the research team reduced the list f pssible alternatives t just a few hundred pssibilities. They then turned t materials scientists at PNNL fr advice n hw t reduce the pssibilities even further. The scientists suggested adding mre specific screening criteria and mre testing runds. After adpting that advice, the team arrived at a prmising alternative and an apprach that invlved replacing apprximately half f the lithium atms in a battery with sdium (钠) atms.
