Sammie Vance was just named ne f PEOPLE’s Girls Changing the Wrld, and she is nly 12 years ld. The seventh grader frm Indiana is cllecting bttle caps t make them int buddy benches (伙伴长椅) fr her schl and neighbrhd parks. But these benches are mre than just fr sitting; they’re t help kids find friends.
Sammie learned abut buddy benches at a camp she attended ne summer. At the camp there were benches set up fr when a child felt lnely; they wuld sit dwn, which means that they are in need f a friend.
She said, “I’m like, ‘This wuld be really cl t have at my schl.’” Then she sprang int actin by meeting with her headmaster t present her idea.
Sammie used a cartn picture that she created t shw hw a simple bench culd help classmates understand when ne f their wn needed a friend. The adults were surely impressed by her idea but were als impressed with hw she planned n making the benches.
Sammie and her mm Heidi fund a cmpany called Green Tree Plastics that culd turn recycled (回收利用的) plastic caps int benches. These recycled benches cst much less than nrmal park benches and are gd fr the envirnment accrding t Sammie’s website.
Then, she gt t wrk and held a cmmunity-wide event, asking members t dnate (捐赠) their ld bttle caps. The event alne cllected 1,600 punds (725 kilgrams) f caps and with that, she created three benches fr her schl.
Sammie cntinued her effrts and enlarged her prject t create mre benches. Nw fficially called Sammie’s Buddy Bench Prject, the prject has a Facebk page fr thers t fllw her jurney and make bttle cap dnatins.
Tday, Sammie has set up 200 recycled benches in schls, neighbrhds and even lcal cmmunity centers. She has n plans f stpping. “Fr me, it’s seeing peple wh need a friend — whether they’re 8 r 80 — because I’ve been lnely myself. I dn’t want thers t feel that way,” she tld PEOPLE.

Thanks t a high schl rbtics team, a tiny dg named Kanga-R wh lst her frnt tw legs at birth is walking n her wn.
The tiny dg, called “R” fr shrt, first made news when she was drpped ff at the Heart f Luisiana Humane Sciety in late 2023. Withut her frnt legs, she had t adapt (适应) t jumping n her back legs fr mving arund. S the Steel Eagles Rbtics Team at Hly Savir Menard Central High Schl in Luisiana put their minds t wrk and began building a special type f wheelchair that gives R tw wheels in place f her frnt legs. Fr the students, seeing their design wrk in real life was an exciting experience.
The team fitted R with her first wheelchair in Octber 2023 using a 3D printer. The dg ran int truble while learning hw t walk in the new setup, but she has adapted well. She has already utgrwn her first wheelchair and is wrking n her secnd. The team will keep building new sizes until R is fully grwn.
The students and the Humane Sciety members have been wrking t teach R hw t use her wheelchair. While she hasn’t mastered it yet, she is getting clse. “She was scared at first but she’s getting mre cmfrtable in it and it has becme a lt easier fr her t mve freely,” the rganizatin’s president, Kristy Ryall, said. “It’s wnderful t see technlgy used in such a caring way,” she added.
Kanga-R’s wheelchair is ne f many prjects the Steel Eagles Rbtics Team has built fr peple r animals in need. Accrding t cach Tnya Shepard, it is their gal t cntribute t (做贡献) the cmmunity and d things that are actually helpful t the cmmunity.

The latest, frm the University f Michigan, suggests spending at least 20 minutes walking r sitting in a place where yu’re in cntact with nature greatly lwers stress levels. Lead researcher MaryCarl Hunter said, “Yu dn’t have t travel t the wild lands. Getting ut f an ffice building and sitting next t a tree can be enugh.”
In a separate study frm the University f Alabama at Birmingham, researchers fund peple wh visited their lcal urban parks felt happier. “Overall, we fund park visitrs reprted an imprvement in emtinal (情绪的) well-being after the park visit,” said lead researcher Hn Yuen. “We did nt find that levels f physical activity were related t imprved emtinal well-being. Instead, we fund that time spent in the park was related t imprved emtinal well-being.”
