Flrence Nightingale, knwn as “The Lady With the Lamp”, is widely regarded as the funder f mdern nursing. In a meaningful step fr China’s plar research, six schlars frm Hng Kng, China, tk part in the cuntry’s 41st Antarctic expeditin(科考队), gathering nearly 300 samples that may help understand Earth’s changing climate. This was the first time Hng Kng researchers have jined such a natinal scientific prject.
The research team, which included scientists frm the Chinese University f Hng Kng(CUHK), carried ut studies arund China’s Great Wall Statin n the Antarctic Peninsula — ne f the wrld’s fastest-warming areas. Their wrk centered n an imprtant envirnmental change: the “greening f Antarctica”.
Researchers explained that climate change has caused tw main changes in this regin. Melting ice and snw have uncvered mre land, while msses (苔藓) have been grwing fr lnger perids. “We fund small pnds rich with different algae and tiny rganisms (微生物), frming clrful scenes that differ greatly frm peple’s usual picture f a cmpletely white Antarctica,” said Lin Liu, a teacher at CUHK.
The research missin used three ships wrking in different areas. Bth Xuelng and Xuelng 2 icebreakers left Guangzhu in Nvember 2024. Xuelng came back this April, and Xuelng 2 is planned t return in June.
All gathered samples, including mss, sil, ice, and micrrganisms, have been sent t CUHK labs fr study. Researchers frm Hng Kng and the Chinese mainland will wrk tgether t examine these materials, hping t find imprtant clues abut future ecsystem changes.
This teamwrk is based n an agreement signed between CUHK and the Plar Research Institute f China in August 2024. The partnership hpes t link Hng Kng with natinal and ther cuntries’ plar research grups and help Hng Kng scientists d advanced plar studies.
Lking frward, CUHK intends t keep jining plar research. Tw scientists will take part in China’s 15th Arctic Ocean Scientific Expeditin this summer, and mre researchers are getting ready fr the 42nd Antarctic Expeditin at the end f this year.
