Life is cruel. While classmates grew taller and taller, he remained small. At 15, friends twered ver him; at 18, entering art schl, he was mistaken by his rmmates fr a lst child lking fr parents. He was frced t declare, “I’m a freshman t,” with his vice carrying unspken frustratin. At 19, playing the rle f “Huang Feihng” in the Hme with Kids made him famus — a rle that brught jy yet bittersweet awareness: directrs valued him nly fr his “childlike” appearance, nt his adulthd.
Life ff-screen prved harder. Rmantic expectatins faltered (动摇) when his girlfriend’s parents asked, “Hw ld is this child?” Pst-marriage, strangers said, “That’s her sn.” While smene nline laughed at their “mismatched” unin, his wife’s steadfast reply — “I lve the persn, nt the appearance” — became his beacn. Hu Xiang states, “Being cast means I’m still useful.”
Hu Xiang has prven thrugh fur decades that life has n fixed pattern. When he declares “I can” befre the camera, and when his wife melts prejudice (偏见) with lve, they bth shw us respect fr difference. Surprisingly, even after being prmpted by the study, nly a third f this grup actually reached ut.
Why might that be? One pssibility is that the ld friend felt like a stranger, and yu aren’t cmfrtable talking t strangers. When the team intrduced an exercise that made peple feel less shy abut talking t a stranger, they als became mre likely t reach ut t the ld friend.

In any f thse circumstances, why shuld yu push yurself t make the effrt?
Why reaching ut t ld friends is wrth it. Mst f us understand that strng relatinships make us happier and healthier. Yu might think that ne r tw stable bnds are enugh. Hwever, research suggests that peple with a bigger netwrk tend t be happier, especially in later life.

An internatinal team f scientists has made a surprising discvery: sme types f bacteria (细菌) living inside tumrs can actually prduce a special mlecule (分子) that helps ur bdy fight cancer. We usually think such bacteria are in ur gut r n ur skin, but new research shws that tumrs have their wn unique nes that can help t.
This exciting finding was published in the jurnal Cell Systems. The researchers fcused n a pwerful mlecule named 2-methyliscitrate (2-MiCit). This mlecule is made by a cmmn bacterium called E. cli, which was fund living inside clrectal tumrs (结直肠肿瘤). Hw did they find it? They first tested ver 1,100 different cnditins using tiny wrms as a simple mdel. After this, they used cmputer mdels t check their discvery and cnfirmed that bacteria taken frm real cancer patients' tumrs culd als prduce 2-MiCit.
The mst imprtant part f the study happened when they tested 2-MiCit directly n human cancer cells in the lab and n fruit flies that had clrectal cancer. In bth experiments, the mlecule shwed strng anti-cancer effects. It successfully killed cancer cells and even helped the sick flies live lnger. Prfessr Filipe Cabreir, ne f the lead scientists, explained, “We are starting t understand the chemical cnversatin between bacteria and cancer cells. This bacterial chemical can be a pwerful partner fr chemtherapy (化疗) t treat cancer.”
S, hw des it wrk? The study shws that 2-MiCit attacks the energy centers f the cancer cells. This attack causes damage t the cell’s DNA and weakens the cancer cell. Because the cancer cells are weaker, they becme much easier t kill with a cmmn chemtherapy drug called 5-FU. Using 2-MiCit and 5-FU tgether was much mre effective at killing cancer cells than using either ne by itself.
Furthermre, the scientists created a changed, strnger, man-made versin f the 2-MiCit mlecule. This shws that we have the ptential t create new and better drugs fr cancer. These findings pen up new paths fr cancer treatment and persnalized medicine.
32. What is the main purpse f the passage?
A. T discuss the side effects f a drug.
B. T explain hw bacteria can be harmful.
C. T recmmend a new drug which is helpful t fight cancer.
D. T intrduce a new finding n hw bacteria help fight cancer.
33. What can we infer frm Prfessr Filipe Cabreir’s wrds?
A. The talk between bacteria and cancer cells is fully knwn nw.
B. The way bacteria and cancer cells interact can be used fr treatment.
C. Chemtherapy is nt needed fr cancer treatment anymre.
D Persnal micrbes are nt imprtant fr persnalized medicine.
34. Accrding t the passage, hw des 2-MiCit help fight cancer?
A. By replacing chemtherapy drugs.
B. By prviding energy fr healthy cells.
C. By damaging the DNA f cancer cells.
D. By making the walls f cancer cells strnger.
35. Which f the fllwing is TRUE based n the passage?
A. 2-MiCit was first fund in human patients.
B. Using 2-MiCit with 5-FU was less effective.
C. A mre pwerful versin f 2-MiCit was made.
D. The research nly studied bacteria n the skin.
