The patient pulled a painful face with cries, but he refused t speak t his dctr. The patient was a gat.
Recgnizing animal pain is tugh. Humans must rely n subtle bdy language r behaviral changes. But a new AI mdel autmates this prcess by identifying pain in gats — using nly their facial expressins.
Traditinally, detecting animal pain invlves hand-analyzing phts r vides fr specific signs — raised lip, wide-pen nstril and creating pain scales (量表) fr individual species. But we humans detect and interpret animals' pain with bias (偏见), says Chiavaccini, the study's lead authr. “When detectin is autmated, the cmputer just picks up the patterns.”
Chiavaccini’s team videtaped 40 gats f varius kinds, ages and different medical cnditins at a veterinary (兽医的) hspital, making ver 5,000 fixed frames. Using a behaviral pain scale, clinical histry and physical exams, they classified each gat as in pain r nt. The team tried three appraches, training an algrithm (算法) n different image grups while reserving thers t test that training. The mst balanced mdel was trained, adjusted and finally tested fr five times, which gave 80% average accuracy. “Such training basically builds 30 years f clinical experience in 30 minutes,” Chiavaccini says.
AI-pwered tls built with similar methds culd smeday help veterinarians make quicker and mre accurate diagnses r warn farmers f early pain in livestck. “This study shws a silver lining f AI in animal care and highlights the need fr further explratin acrss diverse species,” says Mahmud, a scientist in human and animal behaviral AI.
Such tls already exist fr nnverbal human patients, but these systems’ effectiveness can be limited by pr image quality r nnstandard camera angles. “Many f the engineering prblems we slved, like adapting t messy, real-wrld cnditins, culd be helpful t human medicine,” Chiavaccini says. “Dctrs wrry abut perfect lighting r head psitining. Meanwhile I’m ut here racing after a gat with my camera.”
      8. What makes recgnizing animal pain difficult accrding t the passage?
      A. Heavy dependence n phts.B. Misinterpretatin f animal's pain.
      C. Unreliability f humans’ judgement.D. N pain scales fr each animal species.

      C. Theretical analysis.D. Histrical methds.
      10. What’s Mahmud’s attitude tward the applicatin f AI in animal care?
      A. Ambiguus.B. Cautius.C. Prmising.D. Dubtful.

As children grw, their understanding f science and being a scientist changes. Adults’ wrds are critical t keep them engaged in discvery. Kids are naturally curius and lve explring. “What’s that in yur hand? Is it a ball? Will it rll dwn this hill?” they might ask. This is science in actin: bserving, testing, seeing results and asking questins.
But ver time, kids ften lse interest in science. T praise a child, many adults ften say “Yu’re a gd scientist” The language cues (提示), fcusing n science as an identity rather than the actins peple d, partly cause this. Hwever, there are sme steps t keep the curisity alive. A study fund 4-year-ld girls insisted lnger when tld “Let’s d science” instead f “Let's be scientists.”
One pssibility is that children may assciate scientists with men. If they dn’t share that identity, they might disengage frm an activity designed “fr scientists.” Besides, children may think being a scientist needs special intellectual abilities, which they believe nly certain grups have.
Perhaps nw yu are thinking, “Great, I will just fcus n ding science and the actins in the scientific prcess” And this will prbably wrk fr kids, even as they grw frm childhd t teens and early adulthd.
But it’s als true that during the teens, yur kids are actively trying and finally frming their wn identities. Unlike its demtivating effects n yung children, identity-fcused language may help teens stay interested in science. One study fund if yu tld middle schlers t think abut being a “scientist” r “dctr” smeday, they’d d mre hmewrk and prbably get higher grades. That might be because if teens see themselves as scientists, they’ll be willing t wrk t becme wh they want t be.
Hw these tw versins f subtle language cues might wrk tgether has yet t be investigated; perhaps this research culd be dne by yur future scientist.
      12. Hw des the authr present the issue in the first paragraph?

      C. By giving an example.D. By making cmparisns.
      13. What des the underlined wrd “this” refer t in paragraph 2?
      A. The insistence f 4-year-ld girls.B. The lss f scientific curisity.
      C. The adptin f necessary measures.D. The use f actin-fcused phrases.
      14. Hw des the identity-fcused language benefit teens accrding t the study?
      A. It enhances peer cnnectin.B. It increases academic stress.
      C. It reduces wrk prductivity.D. It prmtes study perfrmance.
      15. What will the fllw-up study fcus n?
      A. The design f scientific activities.
      B. The difficulty in keeping curisity alive.
      C. The influence f actin-fcused language.
