Fine Arts K-12, Supervisr f Curriculum and Instructin K-12, Assistant Superintendent, and eventually
Superintendent in tw high-perfrming schl districts.
Lking back, I nw realize hw much music has shaped my life — bth persnally and prfessinally. In
high schl, I wrked hard in my classes, nt just fr grades, but I culd cntinue playing the saxphne (萨克斯
管) each day. As a music teacher, I learned t dedicate many hurs utside the schl day t help my students
succeed. When I was asked in my first administrative interview if I was ready fr the “lng hurs,” I smiled and
replied, “Are the hurs really lnger than thse f a music teacher?”
As Superintendent, I believe it’s imprtant t be visible and t share my values and passins with the schl
cmmunity. Music still allws me t d that. Every December, I’m hnred t guest cnduct ur high schl chir

In the spring, I play in the pit rchestra fr ur schl’s musical, and at many schl events, I ften speak nly

There’s n single “right” butter fr baking, but understanding the differences between types can help yu
make better chices in the kitchen. Accrding t pastry chef Emily Laurae Carter, ne majr difference lies
between American and Eurpean butter.
Eurpean butter, such as Plugra and Kerrygld, usually has a higher fat cntent — arund 82-85% —
cmpared t the 80% fund in mst American butter. Thugh this might seem small, it can affect hw yur baked
gds turn ut. Butter with mre fat als has less water. This can lead t richer flavr and a mre tender texture (质
地) in cakes, ckies, and pastries. American butter, with mre water and slightly less fat, ften makes baked gds
a bit lighter.
Flavr is anther difference. Eurpean butter is ften made using a cultured prcess, which gives it a strnger,
tangier taste. American butter tends t have a mre neutral r slightly sweet flavr. This difference may nt always
be nticeable, but in recipes where butter is a main ingredient (成分) — like shrtbread r crissants—it can make
a big impact.
Clr can vary t. Eurpean butter ften lks mre yellw. This is because cws in Eurpe tend t eat mre
grass, which is rich in beta-cartene — a natural cmpund that gives fds an range r yellw clr. American
butter is ften paler, due t different cw feed and prductin methds. Hwever, butter clr des nt affect hw
yur fd tastes r bakes.
S which shuld yu use? That depends n yur recipe and persnal taste. If yu want a rich, sft texture and
deeper flavr, Eurpean butter may be the better chice. Fr smething lighter, American butter might wrk best.
Fr anyne unsure, Carter recmmends a simple slutin: try bth. Experiment with Eurpean and American butter
in the same recipe and see hw they differ. By cmparing the flavrs and textures, yu can decide which type yu
like better fr yur wn baking.
8. Why des Eurpean butter ften have a richer flavr?
第 5页/共 11页
A. It has slightly less fat. B. It cntains mre water.
C. It is always paler in clr. D. A cultured methd is used t make it.
9 What can we infer frm the clr difference f butter?
A. Cw feed affects butter clr. B. Eurpean butter tastes better.
C. American butter is mre ppular. D. Clr determines baking results.
10. Why des the authr suggest trying bth butters?
A. T practice baking skills. B. T save mney n butter.
C T avid baking mistakes. D. T find persnal preference.
11. Which is the best title fr the text?
A. Hw t Bake with Butter B. Chsing Butter fr Baking
C. The Histry f Butter Making D. Butter: A Key Baking Ingredient

Plastic pllutin remains ne f the wrld’s mst serius envirnmental prblems. In 2019, arund 353
millin tns f plastic waste were prduced wrldwide, and nearly 1.7 millin tns entered rivers and ceans.
Much f this waste gathers in large cean currents, frming the well-knwn “garbage patches” in the Pacific,
Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.
T slve this prblem, scientists have been develping new plastics that can break dwn in nature. One
prmising material is ply (d-lactate-c-3-hydrxybutyrate), r LAHB, which is made using engineered bacteria
(细菌). Earlier studies shwed LAHB culd break dwn in rivers and shallw seawater.
In July 2025, Japanese researchers reprted a majr breakthrugh: LAHB can als break dwn in the deep sea,
whse envirnments are typically hstile t plastic breakdwn due t lw temperatures, high pressure, and limited
nutrients. The study was led by Prfessr Seiichi Taguchi f Shinshu University, alng with scientists frm
JAMSTEC and Gunma University.
The team tested tw types f LAHB films (薄膜) — ne with 6% lactic acid (乳酸) (P6LAHB) and ne with
13% (P13LAHB) —as well as a regular PLA (plylactic acid) film fr cmparisn. The samples were placed 855
meters underwater near Hatsushima Island, where temperatures were 3.6℃ and xygen levels were very lw. The
LAHB film lst 30.9% f its weight after 7 mnths and nearly 80% after 12 mnths, while PLA shwed n change
at all.
Researchers fund that certain bacteria released enzymes that cut the LAHB int small parts, which ther
第 6页/共 11页
bacteria then cnsumed. Tgether, they turned the plastic int harmless substances like carbn dixide and water.
This discvery shws that LAHB culd be a safer and mre ec-friendly ptin than regular plastics, even in
the deep sea. As Prfessr Taguchi explains, the research shws that it is pssible t design plastics that truly fit
int a circular biecnmy and help prtect marine ecsystems.
12. What is the main purpse f the study described in the text?
A. T cut dwn plastic use n land.
B. T find new ways f making PLA.
C. T test if LAHB breaks dwn in deep seas.
D. T shw hw the well-knwn “garbage patches” frm.
13. What des the underlined wrd “hstile” in Paragraph 3 mst likely mean?
A. Safe and cmfrtable. B. Hard and unfavrable.
C. Ordinary and cmmn. D. Friendly and supprtive.
14. What happened t the LAHB films staying in the deep sea fr a year?
A. They turned int PLA. B. They stayed unchanged.
C. They cmpletely disappeared. D. They became nearly 80% lighter.
15. What can we learn abut LAHB frm the study?
A. It is cheaper t make than PLA. B. It never breaks dwn cmpletely.
C. It will stp all plastic pllutin sn. D. It may replace rdinary plastics in the future.
