Lng-distance migratin can take a lt f energy, but these bats have fund sme assistance. They time their springtime departure t happen at the same time as warm frnts that lead strms. These winds tend t blw in the general nrtheasterly directin f the bat migratin this time f year, giving the bats, which weigh abut an unce, a significant lift. “We nted that bats were respnding t gd wind cnditins, but we didn’t think that there was a cnnectin with strms,” Hurme says. The researchers have yet t find ut what signals the bats are using t time their departures.
Mre bradly, it is within Hurme’s visin that an increasing number f research grups begin using the tiny bat tags n ther bat species. Ultimately, that srt f wrk culd cntribute t the cnservatin f bats.
