Using data including a survey f the English ppulatin, the research team estimated (估计) hw many cases f six NCDs — majr depressive disrder (MDD), type 2 diabetes, ischaemic (局部的) heart disease, ischaemic strke, cln cancer, and breast cancer — are prevented thrugh nature-based recreatinal exercise.
      In 2019, 22 millin adults in England aged 16 years r lder visited natural envirnments at least nce a week. Using reprted exercise levels, the researchers estimated that this prevented 12,763 cases f NCDs — the vast majrity being MDD — creating annual healthcare savings f £108.7m.
      Althugh it has been reprted that exercising specifically in natural envirnments is mre helpful fr a lt f emtinal utcmes cmpared with urban envirnments, this is the first such survey cnducted n a natinal wide, the research team said.
      “We have almst certainly underestimated the true value f nature-based physical activity in terms f disease preventin,” Dr James Grellier frm the University f Exeter Medical Schl, said. The team hpe that their study, published in Envirnment Internatinal, encurages investment in spaces such as parks t make it easier fr peple t be physically active.
