When I started my Ph. D. in cancer treatment, I was enthusiastic and curius abut everything. I was determined t make a change. Like many ther researchers, I cnducted many experiments which invlved using many dispsable (一次性的) experimental materials. Gradually, I realized my wrk was generating a lt f waste, but I had accepted it as a necessary evil (罪恶). That all changed ne day when I saw a huge pile f plastic waste — pipette bxes, tubes, packaging — piled against the wall.
I went t my Ph. D. adviser and explained the idea f creating 3D printed lab tls ut f sme f ur waste. She supprted me and we secured funding t purchase recycling equipment and a dedicated 3D printer. Weeks later, I was quite depressed. The equipment required me t individually lad each item t be recycled, which was incredibly time-cnsuming. It was als difficult t get the recycled material int a cnsistent shape that culd be fed int the 3D printer.
Luckily, my clleagues knew hw cmmitted I was t reducing the envirnmental ftprint f ur research. They were eager t brainstrm ther ways t reduce ur envirnmental ftprint.
In the fllwing mnths, we intrduced new recycling bins t each lab after learning that sme f ur plastic waste culd be recycled if it was prperly srted. We als explred ways t reduce ur use f plastic items. And we purchased meters (计量表) t track the energy cnsumptin f varius, pieces f lab equipment. Thrugh thse actins, we managed t turn ff multiple freezers. We als increased the temperature f several ultra-lw temperature freezers after realizing sme samples didn’t have t be stred s cld.
I’m still disappinted that I was nt able t fully realize my 3D-printing visin, and I am determined t keep trying. But I’ve learned that if ne apprach isn’t wrking, smetimes it’s best t take a step back and lk fr ther slutins. I’m thankful that with the help f the academic cmmunity arund me, we were able t d that.
      4. What drve the authr t create 3D printed lab tls?
      A. His curisity abut cancer treatment.
      B. His discntent with the grwing waste.
      C. His willingness t relieve patients’ pains.
      D. His truble in getting experimental materials.
      5. What can we say abut the authr’s 3D-printing visin?
      A. It’s far frm being practicable.B. It takes time t win thers’ favr.
      C. It’s tailred fr varius lab wastes.D. It requires large financial investment.
      6. What des Paragraph 4 fcus n?
      A. The challenges f srting different wastes.
      B. The rutine tasks f the authr’s research wrk.
      C. The effrt put int making sustainable research.
      D. The imprtance f mnitring daily carbn ftprints.

      C. We shuld build bnds with family.D. We shuld respect the fruits f thers.
      C
Dick Cffee attended 781 cnsecutive (连续的) University f Alabama ftball games. Meg Rh surfed thrugh illness, strms, and nightfall t maintain a seven-year daily surfing streak (连续记录).
An activity streak has a magic trick, ften driving individuals t maintain cnsistency and pursue cntinuity, and marketers have apparently taken nte f this. Marketing researchers Jackie Silverman and Alixandra Barasch recently dcumented 101 unique instances f apps that have integrated streaks int their architecture by allwing users t track the number f cnsecutive days n which they cmplete a task.
Peple ften engage in a repetitive way f acting in a given situatin. Mst peple have habits, which are reflex-like and stimulated by the cntext. Fr example, many peple mindlessly fasten their seat belts upn getting in a car. Hwever, a streak ften requires the actr t have a strategy fr cmpleting the activity in varius situatins r cntexts. Fr example, smene with a streak f running at least 1 mile every day may need t carefully plan a run when traveling acrss time znes.
Failing t perfrm a habitual behavir n ccasin will have little impact n the likelihd f the persn perfrming the behavir in the future. Cntrarily, failing t perfrm a behavir that is part f a streak terminates the streak.
In general, a streak adds a higher-level gal (keeping the streak alive) t a lwer-level gal (cmpleting an individual activity). Streaks als add structure t an activity, and structure can simplify thinking and shape decisin-making. Fr example, a streak f meditating (冥想) fr at least 20 minutes each day may be mre appealing, and can lead t meditatrs’ mre regular meditatin, than a streak f meditating fr at least 140 minutes each week. While the amunt f meditatin is the same in bth cases, the utcmes are very different.
While many peple put frward reslutins n Jan.1 r ther imprtant dates, such as hlidays, birthdays, r anniversaries f ntewrthy events, nly a small percentage f peple cmplete them. Having been familiarized with the cncept f streaks, nw yu may knw hw t stick with yur reslutins further int the new year — and maybe far beynd.
      8. Which aspect f streaks might app designers mainly fcus n?
      A. Their efficiency in tracking user data.
      B. Their capacity t prvide rich instances.
      C. Their usability n varius web platfrms.
      D. Their mtivating influence n user behavir.
      9. What distinguishes a streak frm a habit?
      A. The frmer is limited t specific cntexts.
      B. The frmer invlves autmatic respnses.
      C. The frmer is frmed thrugh repetitin.
      D. The frmer requires cnscius effrts.
      10. What des the underlined wrd “terminates” in Paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Highlights.B. Influences.C. Discntinues.D. Benefits.
      11. What des the example f meditating in Paragraph 5 mainly shw?
      A. Hw streaks are structured affects cmmitment.
      B. Hw cnsistency in activity bsts mental health.
      C. Similar streaks vary in their appeal t individuals.
      D. Setting the right gals enhances persnal mtivatin.

Perfume (香味;香水) has held a special place in human histry. The traditinal making prcess invlves cllecting raw materials, prducing ils, mixing, aging and quality cntrl. Fr centuries, perfumers have merely relied n their wn senses. But nw mdern-day perfumers are beginning t lk beynd their nses. They are, instead, turning t neurtechnlgy (神经技术).
Perfume nw can be designed t stimulate emtinal respnses using neurscents (神经气味) shwn by bimetric measures — the use f bilgical data t analyze human respnses — t help inspire different psitive feelings such as calm, jy r sleepiness. Neurtechnlgy can als help perfumers analyze the chemical cmpsitin f these neurscents and find new cmbinatins f raw materials that can prduce similar r enhanced effects.
Researcher Hug Ferreira is trying t build a database f neurscents. “With sight and hearing, yu can imagine the face f a lved ne r the favurite tune. It’s hard t imagine a smell thugh it can stimulate a series f emtins and memries.”
Ferreira explains this is due t the structure f the lfactry (嗅觉的) system. Messages frm scent receptrs are sent thrugh the lfactry bulb t different brain areas that cntrl everything frm memry r thirst t stress reactins. Olfactin is the mst diverse sense with many different receptrs. It’s estimated that there are abut 400 different lfactry receptr gene families. Amng ther things these varius cnnectins may explain hw we can “smell fear, r victry.”
L’Oréal, a French multinatinal persnal care cmpany, has partnered with neurtechnlgy cmpany Emtiv t create a scent chice “experience”. During 2023, shppers at certain stres used a device t discver which scents appealed t them. Results s far shw that 95% f custmers wh used the device fund the right perfume. Anther perfume frm Givenchy, a French luxury fashin and perfume huse, has been a bestseller fr years, which includes a special substance chsen after bimetric research.
Hwever, perfume writer Katie Puckrik says she’d like t “design her wn perfume”. “Leave the magic t the artists. Why d we need a cmputer t tell us what ur nse already knws? Finding a new favrite scent by chance is a rare mment f grace we shuld allw urselves,” she says.
      12. Hw can neurtechnlgy functin in the perfume-making prcess?
      A. By distinguishing ne scent frm the ther.
      B. By explring the best way t btain special il.
      C. By finding the scents mst appealing t peple.
      D. By ffering perfumers infrmatin f materials.
      13. What des Ferreira want t indicate in paragraph 3?
      A. The clse cnnectin amng ur senses.
      B. The great cmplexity f the lfactry system.
      C. The relatinship between emtin and memry.
      D. The significance f having a gd imaginatin.
      14. Why are the perfume brands mentined in the text?
      A. T shw applicatins f neurtechnlgy.
      B. T cllect mre data fr bimetric research.
      C. T illustrate the fierce cmpetitin between them.
      D. T stress their dminance in the perfume industry.
      15. What is Katie Puckrik’s attitude twards the new technlgy?
      A. Tlerant.B. Unclear.C. Supprtive.D. Negative.

Amng villagers lived Mark, an dd, thin, shrt man. Because Mark preferred his ideas fr inventins t hard wrk in a field, he was ften laughed at by the villagers. Frtunately, he didn’t have t wrk in the field, as his grandfather hired him t wrk at his blacksmith’s wrkshp.
In his spare mments, Mark wuld devte himself t his inventins. A year ag, his grandfather made a kettle. Once he was waiting fr the water t start biling in the kettle, he saw the steam cme ut f the kettle and thught, “The steam cmes ut at pretty high speed. Culd a huge kettle prduce enugh steam t drive a windmill?”
It tk him fur mnths t create smething like a steam engine. Mark cntinued thinking, “I’ll add wings, and it will be able t fly.” Mark built a wden cnstructin f an air vehicle and he pwered the wings with the steam engine. He went t the big bkstre in a faraway city and bught bks n aircraft cnstructin. He even bught back sme parts and used metal sheets frm the junkyards. Mark started studying the pictures mre exactly. He built a fuselage (机身) with wheels, and he munted a big airscrew (螺旋桨) n it. He wrked hard t gather all the parts needed fr the plane accrding t the drawings. It tk Mark anther six mnths t cmplete his plane. Despite the dubtfulness f his grandfather and ther villagers, Mark transprted the plane t a cliff atp the muntain with the help f friends. He believed pretty strng winds wuld significantly help his plane fly and he als believed he culd make it this time.
