Later, the cuple rganized an exhibitin fr lcal artist Cdy Lusby. Abut 40 peple shwed up. Sn, thers began asking Clark t build micr-galleries fr them. And then, artists frm arund Ls Angeles and as far away as Ecuadr began asking t shw their wrks. At a time f falling supprt fr public arts and artists, these micr-galleries have created neighbrhd art areas.
After retiring in 2016, Clark funded an art center cnnecting artists. He had lng grwn tired f the traditinal “pay t play” prcess. Art galleries chse nly a select few t be shwn while artists were spending several hundred dllars a year getting in varius places just fr expsure (曝光). At this art center, Clark charges $450 fr the materials, building and set-up. The artists receive 100% f the prfits (收益) fr any wrk sld.
Sme artists wh’ve never shwn their wrks ask t exhibit their wrk. Recently ne f Clark’s neighbrs asked t exhibit his partner’s father’s wrk. “He’s an artist in his 80s. Fr artists like him, this is such a cl, fun thing. It represents their first individual shw. And that’s a prud achievement,” Clark said.
“It’s imprtant that art becme a part f everyday life,” said Linda Grimes, the directr f a lcal art area. “Nt everybdy is welcme t g int an art gallery r a museum. Artists f lcal art areas started painting thse traffic signal bxes s that peple culd see art and appreciate it utside, n the street every day. And then they painted large nes.”

Science and scial studies textbks are ften difficult fr first- and secnd-grade students. S traditinal teaching methds in Nrth Carlina encurage teachers t remve English-learning students frm thse cntent classes t fcus n their language skills instead. But a new study finds that it is nt really like this.
By creating a 10-week literacy (读写能力) prgram, which kept English learners in science and scial studies classes, researchers saw imprvements in their ability t use new vcabulary and write articles. The study highlights the imprtance f intrducing English learners t subject-based cntent, said Jackie Relyea, assistant prfessr f literacy educatin at Nrth Carlina State University.
The literacy prgram bserved students in 30 primary schls in Nrth Carlina. The researchers prvide infrmatinal texts fr thse students. They applied methds like read-aluds, grup research and cncept mapping (概念图) t build students’ vcabulary and understanding f difficult tpics. Cncept mapping refers t using drawings r similar aids t shw cnnectins between ideas.
Clearly, the study fund that English learners had similar levels f imprvement in science and scial studies as their classmates skilled in English. Besides, the prgram did nt lead t negative results elsewhere, which supprts the idea that English-learning students can attend mre advanced classes withut falling behind. This further suggests that cntent-rich literacy instructin may help narrw the achievement gap when it cmes t English learning.
“One thing we nticed is the imprtance f using well-rganized texts that cver the same tpic. In mre traditinal literacy instructin, tpics usually changed quickly and there wasn’t always a clear cnnectin that the students culd hld n t. By fcusing n similar subjects fr lnger, kids can dig deeper and develp mre in-depth knwledge. It als helps them becme experts in the subject matter, which greatly imprves their vcabulary and understanding skills,” Relyea said.
The study challenges cmmn beliefs abut English learners, shwing they can deal with difficult subjects even with limited English skills. Relyea suggested that mre research n adding small-grup lessns culd make the prgram even mre effective.
8. What des the new study fcus n?
A. Mistakes in traditinal teaching.B. English learners’ subject access.
C. Students’ ways t learn vcabulary.D. The rle f language skills in writing.
9. What des paragraph 3 mainly tell us abut the literacy prgram?
A. Its main challenges.B. Its target audiences.
C. Its educatinal gals.D. Its teaching strategies.
10. Which is the key finding abut English learners in the prgram?
A. They experienced equal prgress.
B. They required extra help t keep up.
C. They shwed curisity abut varius tpics.
D. They perfrmed prly in advanced curses.
11. What matters fr literacy instructin accrding t Relyea?
A. Using simple texts in early classes.
B. Changing between a variety f themes.
C. Allwing students time fr self-learning.
D. Prviding similar tpic learning materials.

Plar bears have a thick layer (层) f fat belw tw layers f fur that help hld their bdy heat. These layers keep them s warm that adult bears can quickly verheat when they run. Hwever, ice des nt build up n the fur, despite the bears spending nearly all f their time in and arund freezing cld water. This unique feature has caught the attentin f scientists, wh are eager t understand its secrets.
T learn mre abut it, a research team cllected hair frm six plar bears in the wild. They tested hw strngly ice stuck t the fur. Next, they checked if water rlled ff the fur befre turning int ice. They then cmpared the perfrmance f plar bear hair with human hair and tw human-made ski skins.
“The grease (油脂) quickly jumped ut as being the key factr causing this ice-preventing effect, as we discvered the ice-hlding ability was bviusly altered when the hair was washed,” said Julian Carlan, a study c-authr. “Unwashed, greasy hair made it much harder fr ice t hld n t. In cntrast, when the plar bear hair was washed and the grease was largely remved, it perfrmed similarly t human hair, t which ice attaches readily.”
This grease als helps explain mre abut the hunting strategies f plar bears. Plar bears use still hunting, where they lay cmpletely still next t a breathing hle in the ice fr underwater animals. “Smetimes, in still hunting, the plar bear quietly mves int the water using its back feet t fllw its fd. The less the ice sticks t them, the less nise is prduced and the faster and quieter the mvement,” said Bdil Hlst, an experimental physicist at the University f Bergen in Nrway.
In additin t learning mre abut these masters f adaptatin, the study can help wrk ut new slutins that keep away ice, leading t healthier and strnger fabrics (织物), skis, snwbards, and mre. The natural fatty catings fund in bears are expected t infrm the develpment f mre sustainable catings, which culd serve as replacements fr harmful lng-lasting chemicals like PFAS, which have been cmmnly used in ice-preventing applicatins.
12. What abut plar bears has drawn scientists’ interest?
A. Their unique ability t stay ice-free.B. Their usual presence in freezing water.
C. Their fear f verheating during activity.D. Their pwer t survive in tugh cnditins.
13. What des the underlined wrd “altered” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Cvered.B. Weakened.C. Changed.D. Separated.
14. Hw des the grease benefit plar bears accrding t Bdil Hlst?
A. It prevents injury risks.B. It tricks their target animals.
C. It is helpful fr string energy.D. It enables them t hunt mre easily.
15. What pssible prgress can plar bears’ fatty catings inspire?
A. Creating safer ice prtectin materials.B. Imprving the survival skills f wildlife.
C. Designing prducts with fewer catings.D. Making sprts equipment wrk smthly.
