Research scientists examined 48 ppulatins f sea turtles (海龟) arund the glbe, measuring the impact f hunting, pllutin, castal develpment, climate change, and ther threats n these animals. Significantly, in ver half f the areas studied, they fund that these threats are declining.
Study c-authr Michelle María Early Capistrán emphasizes what has cntributed t the recvery f sea turtle ppulatins. “Legal prtectin was advanced by the U. S. Endangered Species Act f 1973 and Mexic’s decisin t ban the catch f sea turtles in 1990. Cnservatinists have strategically fcused n nesting beaches and habitat prtectin, minimizing bth light pllutin that cnfuses baby turtles searching fr the cean, and plastic waste in castal znes,” Capistrán detailed in a statement.
Accrding t the Oceanic Sciety blg, this study is the mst cmprehensive evaluatin t date f the status f sea turtle ppulatins and the wrldwide threats t them. The analysis reflects the effrts f nearly 150 experts acrss 50 cuntries. And the findings indicate real prgress: Over 40 percent f the assessed sea turtle ppulatins are nw cnsidered “Lw Risk—Lw Threat”, a dramatic imprvement n just 23 percent in 2011.
Prblems remain, thugh. While sea turtles in the Atlantic Ocean are mre likely t be buncing back than turtles in Pacific waters, leatherback turtles, cnsidered at risk f extinctin, and in sme areas, critically endangered accrding t the WWF, are nt living as well as sme ther species.
All f the seven regins where leatherbacks are lcated face high envirnmental risks. These turtles make the lngest-knwn marine migratins (海洋迁徙 ) f any animal, with sme swimming up t 3,700 miles each way. The migratins that mve them thrugh a wide range f regins may expse them t unique risks.
“These findings are prf f the devtin f individuals and rganizatins wrking tirelessly t prtect these ancient marine species,” said Bryan Wallace, a study authr and wildlife eclgist. “But sea turtles can accidentally get trapped by fishing equipment like fishing nets. It is crucial that the new technlgies being develped t spare turtles becme widely accepted and used by diverse fishing cmmunities t really make a difference.”

An experiment was a striking attempt t investigate weight cntrl. Fr six weeks, a grup f mice fed n high-fat fd, and then scientists infected the mice with wrms (蠕虫).
Brun Guigas, a mlecular bilgist at the Leiden University Center fr Infectius Diseases in the Netherlands, led this study sme years back and the results, he says, were quite amazing. The mice lst fat and gained less weight verall than mice nt expsed t wrms. Within a mnth r s, he recalls, the scientists barely needed their measuring tl t see that the mice infected with wrms lst mre weight than the nes nt expsed t wrms. Infectin with wrms seems t have fught besity (肥胖), the researchers reprted in 2015.
While it’s true that wrms eat up the fd their hsts might therwise digest, that desn’t seem t be the nly factr at wrk here. There’s als sme cmplicated bilgy within the emerging scientific field f immunmetablism (免疫代谢).
Over the past cuple f decades, researchers have recgnized that the immune system desn’t just fight infectin. It’s als assciated with rgans like the liver, the pancreas and fat tissue, and implicated in the prgressin f besity and type 2 diabetes. These and ther metablic disrders generate a trublesme immune respnse — inflammatin (炎症), which wrsens metablism still further. Metablic disease, smetimes, is inflammatry disease.
Scientists have als bserved the metablic influence f wrms in peple wh became naturally infected with the wrms r were purpsely seeded with wrms in clinical trials. While the physilgy isn’t fully understd, the wrms seem t be real masters at cntrlling inflammatin, as discussed in the 2024 Annual Review f Nutritin.
Wrms can be dangerus in high numbers, and cause symptms such as diarrhea and malnutritin in thse at high risk, including children. But fr mst peple, infectin with a few wrms is benign. They can cexist with humans.
“We’re never ging t cure r treat metablic disease with wrm infectins,” says Guigas. “They cause unpleasant side effects, and it wuld be impractical t infect millins f peple with wrms. But the findings culd inspire mre traditinal treatments, which might bring fewer negative effects.”
12. What happened t the mice expsed t wrms within abut a mnth?
A. They became sick f high-fat fd.
B. They brke free f the infected wrms.
C. They infected the mice nt expsed t wrms.
D. They gt nticeably thinner than wrm-free mice.
13. What can be learned frm paragraph 4?
A. Inflammatry disease can be cured with wrms.
B. Treating metablic disease demands dewrming.
C. The immune system nly fights against infectin.
D. Cntrlling inflammatin may benefit metablism.
14. What des the underlined wrd “benign” in paragraph 6 prbably mean?
A. Harmless.B. Dangerus.C. Cmplex.D. Avidable.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Studies n Mice: The Key t Weight Cntrl
B. Wrms Can Help t Fight Metablic Disease
C. Wrms: A Ptential Threat t Human Health
D. Inflammatry Disease Spreads Amng Peple
