Fr the past tw mnths, I’ve spent weekday evenings and weekends tidying the ld bk sectin at Prtland City Library. As an ffice wrker, I sught meaningful after-wrk tasks — and the library’s vlunteer call fr rganizing messy back shelves felt perfect. In the sectin, I fund ld nvels mixed with histry bks, yellwed-page bks stuffed behind new releases, and sme with lse spines (书脊) that culd fall apart if handled carelessly. I aimed t arrange these bks int different grups, and fix minr damages gently, s readers culd find them easily. S far, I’ve gne thrugh ver 150 bks, mst needing just a little care t be usable.
Sme evenings after 6 pm wrk, I’d head t the library and ften find bxes f petry cllectins I’d verlked under the tables. Mildew (霉点) sptted sme bks’ cvers, s I learned frm the librarian t wipe them with a sft clth withut damaging the pages. Sme peple wh frequently came t read always asked me if we culd keep wrn bks, such as a 1980s editin f T Kill a Mckingbird. Chsing between a slightly damaged The Old Man and the Sea and an utdated 1990s travel guide was tugh — each bk felt like it held its wn stry.
I’ve lved ld bks since childhd — running my fingers ver pages feels like cnnecting with past readers, and head librarian Ms. Lpez said, “Emily, yu handle things with such attentin t detail — that’s exactly what these bks need.” Her trust encuraged me t try as hard as I culd in this vlunteering wrk.
Very ften, I feel wrn ut — like staying up late n Fridays t fix a bk’s lse spine, then waking early fr wrk the next day. Last week, an elderly man came in lking fr a 1970s travel bk he’d read as a teen, and I’d just srted it nt the “Classic Travel” shelf. His wide smile made all thse tiring nights disappear. I’m nt perfect at this wrk, but I keep ging — fr the bks, and the readers waiting t find them.
      4. What was ne f Emily’s after-wrk jbs in the library?
      A. Srting ld bks by type.B. Recycling classic bks.
      C. Organizing new releases by authr.D. Registering damaged bks.
      5. What can be inferred abut the authr frm paragraph 2?
      A. She has a preference fr nvels.B. She’s familiar with sme readers.
      C. She’s interested in writing petry.D. She des well in repairing bk spines.
      6. Hw des Ms. Lpez find the authr?
      A. She’s careful.B. She’s humrus.
      C. She’s knwledgeable.D. She’s demanding.
      7. Why was the elderly man mentined in the last paragraph?
      A. T praise his reading habit.B. T shw cntinuus tiredness.
      C. T describe a difficult learner.D. T prve the significance f the authr’s wrk.

Recently, researchers discvered that light pllutin is leading birds t wake even earlier and g t sleep later.
The study result tk the researchers by surprise. “While we expected sme behaviral adjustment t the lights at night, we didn’t envisage that it wuld be this impactful,” says Neil Gilbert, an eclgist at Oklahma State University in Stillwater. This study gives researchers a first lk at hw human-created lights are affecting the daily lives f birds wrldwide.
Past research has repeatedly shwn that bright city lights can be cnfusing and deadly fr traveling birds, sending them ff curse. But Gilbert and Brent Pease, a wildlife eclgist, tk a mre cmprehensive view by analyzing millins f recrdings f birdsng. The recrdings were cllected by thusands f devices set up in backyards and ther lcatins, by nn-prfessinal birdwatchers and ther wildlife enthusiasts acrss cntinents, as part f a prgram called BirdWeather. After checking the dataset fr 4.4 millin calls, the team studied the daily start and end times f the singing activity f 583 bird species, cmparing thse times t the lcal light pllutin levels.
In the brightest places, birds extended their singing time by an average f 50 minutes cmpared with the darkest — by 18 minutes in the mrning and 32 minutes in the evening. Overall, the birds that shwed the greatest reactivity t light pllutin were the nes that had larger eyes fr their bdy size. The Tufted Titmuse, fr example, has relatively small eyes. “It didn’t have a strng respnse t light pllutin,” says Pease. Neither did the Eastern Bluebird, White Breasted Nuthatch, r Carlina Chickadee. Besides, birds that nest in dark areas — like hles in trees — weren’t greatly affected by light pllutin.
The researchers say that the natural patterns f birds’ being interrupted is highly wrthy f attentin. But they say it’s t early t tell if staying up lnger is actually harmful t the birds. They say it’s pssible that the birds are adjusting smehw and that extra activity may even be helpful, giving birds mre time t find fd t feed their yung.
      8. What des the underlined wrd “envisage” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Claim.B. Fresee.C. Recgnize.D. Explain.
      9. What d we knw abut Gilbert and Pease’s bird research?
      A. It was inspired by bird calls.B. It was based n lcal frmer research.
      C. It was cnducted in the field.D. It was backed by glbal citizen scientists.
      10. Which is ne f the Eastern Bluebird’s features accrding t the study?
      A. It is nt sensitive t light.B. It has relatively larger eyes.
      C. It prefers t live in darkness.D. It is nt fnd f singing vertime.
      11. What’s the researchers’ attitude t the changes f birds’ sleeping patterns?
      A. Wrried.B. Uncncerned.C. Supprtive.D. Uncertain.
      D
Scientists at King’s Cllege Lndn have develped a very unusual tthpaste (牙膏).
Unlike bnes r skin, adult teeth can’t repair themselves when damaged. The same is true fr the uter layer f teeth — enamel. The enamel that cats ur teeth is the hardest material in the bdy. It’s a srt f crystal (晶体) structure hardened by minerals. But ver time, it can wear dwn because f acids in fds and drinks. Lsing the uter layer frequently results in tth sensitivity, serius pain, and ultimately tth lss.
Mst tthpaste cntains fluride, which is a grup f chemical substances that can help add mre minerals t tth enamel, making it strnger. Fluride tthpaste can slw the prcess f tth enamel wearing away with age but nt stp it. Once enamel is gne, the bdy can’t make mre f it.
Sherif Elsharkawy, ne f the scientists invlved, hped t find a natural way t try t restre enamel. He thught keratin, a prtein in ur bdies and in many animals that helps make hair, skin, and fingernails strng and healthy, might d the trick. The scientists tk keratin frm sheep’s wl. When the keratin-based tthpaste was applied t teeth in the labratry, it repaired hles in the enamel. On the ther hand, current methds f repairing damaged teeth invlve the use f traditinal plastic resins (树脂), cmmnly used in restrative dentistry, which are cnsidered risky and less durable.
Keratin can be btained frm many surces that are nrmally wasted. One f these wasted surces f keratin is human hair. The scientists believe that their slutin t this cmmn dental cncern may nly be 2 t 3 years away frm becming publicly available. They hpe the keratin based mixture culd be added t ver-the-cunter tthpaste like fluride, r used in targeted repairs at a dentist’s by applying it like nail plish. “With further develpment, we may sn be grwing strnger, healthier smiles frm smething as simple as a haircut,” Elsharkawy said.
      12. What is the functin f enamel?
      A. It strengthens teeth with minerals.B. It ffers a tth prtective barrier.
      C. It causes tth sensitivity and pain.D. It repairs damaged teeth by itself.
      13. Hw des the authr highlight keratin?
      A. By making assumptins.B. By giving a definitin.
      C. By drawing cmparisns.D. By judging a statement.
      14. What d the scientists expect f the new keratin tthpaste?
      A. It’ll serve as nail plish.B. It’ll reach cnsumers sn.
      C. It’ll be surced in a lng-term way.D. It’ll be cheaper than resins.
      15. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Tthpaste Histry: Frm Fluride t Keratin
      B. Ec-friendly Tthpaste: Recycling Human Hair
      C. Keratin Tthpaste: A Natural Dental Imprvement
      D. Cmfrtable Tthpaste: Reducing Tth Sensitivity
