When it cmes t navigating (导航) areas, past studies shwed that the abilities dn’t truly kick in until 12. Hwever, a new study has revealed that children aged 5 can find their way arund large spaces.
The researchers invlved with this study previusly cncentrated n three regins f the adult brain that help navigatin: PPA, which lets us recgnize places and assign them t different categries, RSC, which maps these places within a larger space and OPA, which keeps us frm running int bjects. In 2024, they fund that the system assciated with OPA desn't fully develp until the age f 8. Hwever, they therized that yunger children must still be able t create a map f their surrundings, even befre they can walk well.
The new study cnfirmed that RSC is already well-develped in children yunger than 8. The results cme frm an interesting experiment invlving five-year-ld participants wh became familiar with a virtual lcatin called “Tiny Twn” full f entertaining landmarks like ice cream stres, playgrunds and fire statins. “We want t get answers, but it’s als imprtant that participants have a gd time and a gd impressin f science,” said Yaelan Jung, first authr f the study.
