A 16th-century painting, Madnna and Child by Venetian artist Antni Slari, has becme the fcus f an internatinal legal battle after resurfacing in Britain. Stlen in 1973 frm a museum in Bellun, Italy, the artwrk was recvered in Austria alngside ther stlen pieces but later acquired by Barbara De Dzsa, a British wman, whse late husband purchased it “in gd faith” that year.

Hwever, Italian authrities and art lawyer Christpher Marinell argue the wrk remains stlen prperty. The painting was identified in 2017 when De Dzsa attempted t auctin (拍卖) it, drawing special attentin frm Inter-plice and Italian plice databases. Due t the delays fr sme unstppable reasn, Italy missed the deadline t submit legal dcuments, leading British plice t return the painting t De Dzsa in 2020.
Marinell, funder f Art Recvery Internatinal, insists the museum keeps legal wnership, stressing that British plice clearly denied transferring title t De Dzsa. The Bellun museum’s Carl Cavalli stressed this psitin again, stating pssessin des nt equal t wnership.
De Dzsa claims financial burdens t cntest the case, including $6,000 in legal fees and insurance csts, but Marinell cntradicts that the painting’s value ($60,000–$80,000) and illegal status render it unsellable. British plice cited Italy’s delayed respnse as a gd reasn fr releasing the artwrk t her.
The case underscres tensins between legal technical details and ethical bligatins in art wnership. Slari, active in Italy and pssibly England, has wrks displayed in Lndn’s Natinal Gallery, highlighting the cultural significance f reclaiming lst heritage. Scientists say a huge percentage f bird species are in danger because their habitats, r hmelands, are disappearing.
Traditinal migratin paths take birds thrugh cuntries that are nt prtecting the places fr birds t stp, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migratin r flight paths f almst 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent f them passed thrugh dangerus areas.
The majr danger fr migratry birds is develpment. Buildings and pavements have cvered the places where birds stp and feed as they mve frm ne part f the wrld t anther. One f the scientists wh wrked n the study says “Many f these imprtant places have been lst t land reclamatin because f urban, industrial and agricultural land expansin”.
The prblem, accrding t scientists, is that many f these small birds die alng their migratin paths because they dn’t have a safe place t feed and rest. There is n place t restre their energy fr the next part f their jurney. Cuntries in Nrth Africa, Central Asia and thse alng the casts f East Asia are having the mst difficult time in prtecting land. The scientists say these cuntries d nt have enugh areas that are safe fr birds. One species that desn’t exist nw is the Eskim curlew. “Our wrld gets prer every time we lse a species,” ne f the scientists says.
The researchers say cuntries need t wrk tgether and cme up with safe stpping areas fr birds that pass thrugh their bundaries. Fr example, ne cuntry might have preserved safe znes fr migrating birds. But a neighbr cuntry might nt. A bird might die.
One scientist wh is nt cnnected with the reprt tells Ls Angeles Times that while sme habitats are changing, mre wrk can be dne t make urban areas safe fr birds.
He says small changes, like planting mre native plants r keeping cats ut f the areas birds wuld be likely t use, culd make a big difference.

A. By keeping fewer cats r dgs.
B. By restring their destryed habitats.
C. By helping change the birds’ migratin paths.
D. By preserving the eclgical envirnments n their migratin paths.
11. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the passage?
A. T call n peple t prtect the birds’ habitats.
B. T analyze the reasns fr disappearing f birds’ habitats.

We starve it. Sweat it ff. Freeze r carve it ut. Bdy fat is seen as an evil, and the way we treat peple with larger bdies fills me with anger. We build tiny airplane seats and cmplain when peple can’t fit in them; we watch as ttal strangers laugh at larger peple abut their health.
The way we stigmatize fat is frustrating given hw imprtant ur fat cells are. We are used t thinking f fat as this passive thing we try t stuff int ur jeans. But what if we saw it as a bilgical rgan and ne f the mst adaptable in the human bdy? What if we gave it the same research funding, care and attentin we gave ur hearts, livers r brains?
It might seem dd t think f fat as an rgan, in part because many f the rgans we think abut are s cntained. There is nly ne liver, nly tw kidneys. But adipse tissue (脂肪组织), which cmmunicates with stmach, brain and immune system, is stred all ver the bdy. The mst abundant frm, white adipse tissue, is beneath the skin. We wrngly assciate this tissue with laziness. Instead, it is full f energy. Each cell cntains a large drp f liquid filled with multichained mlecules (多链分子), which it releases as fuel. The tissue’s ability t grw and shrink is a feature, nt a bug. It is cnstantly swelling and draining, taking up energy and sending it ut again multiple times per day. Thanks t fat, ur bichemistry functin smthly.
S why have we hated it s much and fr s lng? Fear f fat has existed thrughut histry, with even Shakespeare telling fat jkes, lng befre we understd anything abut metablic (新陈代谢) health. Als, diets and weight-lss drugs are marketed with health benefits. They sell the public n “lsing weight,” withut regard fr which kinds f tissue are being lst, r hw that lss might affect the rest f the bdy.
Our stigma causes harm and it als causes incurisity. If we apprach fat with mre appreciatin, we might be able t develp mre treatments that target the metablic disease, rather than assuming less weight will slve all prblems. We might learn mre abut hw ur wn bdies use adipse tissue. We might gain a different view f larger bdies. We might d better fr science and sciety, if we culd nly stmach a different view f fat.
12. What des the underlined wrd “stigmatize” mean?
A. stmachB. apprachC. discriminateD. appreciate
13. What’s the main idea f paragraph 3?
A. The functins f fat in ur bdy.
B. The harm f fat caused t ur bdy.
C. The cmmunicatin f rgans in ur bdy.
D. The cmpnents f adipse tissue in ur bdy.
14. Why are diets and weight-lss drugs mentined?
A. T claim hw harmful fat is.
B. T explain why fat is undervalued.
C. T emphasize hw healthy they are.
D. T indicate why the public values their effects.
15. What is the authr’s attitude twards fat?
A. Unclear.B. Cautius.C. Dismissive.D. Appreciative.
