An AI frm Ggle DeepMind has achieved a silver medal scre at this year’s Internatinal Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the first time any AI has made it t the pdium (领奖台).
The IMO is cnsidered the wrld’s mst famus cmpetitin fr yung mathematicians. In January, Ggle DeepMind demnstrated AlphaGemetry, an AI system that culd answer sme IMO gemetry questins as well as humans. Hwever, this was nt frm a live cmpetitin, and it culdn’t answer questins frm ther mathematical disciplines.
Ggle DeepMind has nw released a new AI, called AlphaPrf, which can slve a wider range f mathematical prblems. It is an imprved versin f AlphaGemetry that can slve mre gemetry questins.
When the team tested bth systems tgether n this year’s IMO questins, they answered fur ut f six questins crrectly, giving them a scre f 28 ut f a pssible 42 pints. This was enugh t win a silver medal and
just ne pint under this year’s gld medal threshld (门槛). At the cntest in Bath, UK, 58 cmpetitrs wn a gld
medal and 123 wn a silver medal.
“We are all very much aware that AI will eventually be better than humans at slving mst mathematical prblems, but the rate at which AI is imprving is breathtaking,” says Gregr Dlinar, the IMO president. “Missing the gld medal at IMO 2024 by just ne pint a few days ag is truly impressive.”
While AlphaPrf’s perfrmance is impressive, it wrks slwly, taking up t three days t find sme slutins instead f the 4. 5 hurs per three questins that cmpetitrs are allwed. It als failed t answer bth questins n cmbinatrics, which is the study f cunting and arranging numbers. “We are still wrking t understand why this is, which will hpefully lead us t imprve the system,” says Alex Davies at Ggle DeepMind.
What d we knw abut AlphaPrf in paragraph 3?
      Its all functins.B.Its ptential clients.
C.Its advantages ver AlphaGemetry.D.Its abilities t analyse prblems.
What can be learned abut this year’s Internatinal Mathematical Olympiad?
It tk place in Bath, UK.B.There were 10 questins in the cntest.
C.181 cmpetitrs tk part in the cntest. D.This year’s gld medal threshld was 30 pints.
What is ne f the limitatins f AlphaPrf?
It can nly slve gemetry-related prblems.
It is much slwer than human cmpetitrs in answering questins.
It has difficulty in understanding the basic cncepts f mathematics.
It requires a large amunt f cmputing resurces t functin
What may be Alex Davies’ attitude t the develpment f AlphaPrf?
