A medical breakthrugh in China is giving new hpe t peple with spinal crd injuries (脊髓损伤).Scientists have created a braIn-spinal chip(芯片) that allws paralyzed (瘫痪的) patients t mve their legs, and even walk again.
The chip, nly 1 mm wide, is designed t be fitted int the brain and spinal crd. If the natural cmmunicatin between the brain and muscles(肌肉) is lst, this chip becmes the bridge. When the chips wrk, they create a direct cnnectin between the brain and muscles.
The results have been amazing. A 34-year-ld man, paralyzed after a fall, culd mve his legs just ne day after the peratin n Jamuary 8,2025. Tw weeks later, he walked five meters with help. Three ther patients had similar peratins in February and March, all getting better within weeks. Even thugh the patients’ nervus systems were damaged (受损), the chips helped them walk again. This marks a big step in China's prgress in medical science and it brings hpe fr ver 3.7 millin peple in China.
“This is just the beginning,” Jia, the lead researcher, says. “With the technlgy, these peple may ne day leave wheelchairs behind after 3 t 5 years f training.”
Behind this achievement is a lng jurney f careful research and bld thinking. It tk the researchers ver 10 years t develp the chip. They tested it n animals first, and then n peple. They faced many challenges, yet they never gave up. Step by step, they develped a system t recnnect the mind and bdy in ways nce appearing nly in science fictin.
As the chip cntinues t imprve, it lights a new path frward —— ne built n science, shaped by care, and aimed tward a brighter future.

Accrding t the reprt, fr the first time ever, fires were the biggest cause f frest lss. ▲ . This cuntry has the largest area f rainfrest in the wrld. Last year, it suffered frm a lng perid f dry weather.Wildfires brke ut and spread. As a result, abut 25,000 square kilmeters f the primary rainfrest disappeared in the cuntry. This meant fires caused 66% f its frest lss.
The secnd biggest cause f the wrld's frest lss was clearing land fr farming. As peple need mre farmland, they keep cutting dwn frests every year. In 2024, the area f frest cleared fr farming increased by14% wrldwide. The situatin was mre severe in develping cuntries. Fr example, Blivia’ s frest lss dubled in 2024.
Withut dubt, smething must be dne. Experts call n gvernments, businesses and peple t wrk tgether befre it is t late. It seems that China has set a gd example. Imagine a rbt. What cmes t yur mind first? A machine strnger than the human bdy? Hwever, this
same quality is nw causing a big prblem— it's creating tns f lng-lasting e-waste that culd fld ur planet. What if, instead, the machines we use were designed t break dwn and disappear— just as living things d?
Fr a study published in Science Advances, researchers made a rbtic arm and a cntrller using materials frm animals and plants. These materials are strng enugh t wrk but can easily break dwn in a natural envirnment. After testıng, bth parts were gne in sil within weeks.
Bidegradable(可生物降解的) rbtics ften falls under the umbrella f sft rbtics, which takes ideas frm nature. “This field started in materials science and chemistry rather than traditinal rbts that cme frm mechanical (机械的) engineering.” says Flrian Hartmann, a materials seientist frm Germany. Hwever, many early sft rbtics mdels still used man-made materials that cause pllutin.
Wei, a scientist wh studies natural materials in Hangzhu, wrked tgether with his f rend Zhang, a rbtics engineer in Shanghai, t build rbts fr the new study. They started with cellulse (纤维素) taken frm cttn. Then, they added glycerl(甘油) t make a new material that is sft and easy t change shapes. After that they allwed it t dry s it became strng, “Cellulse is cheap and easy t wrk with,” says Wei. They fund that the cntrller and the rbtic arm std up t bth heavy use and a week f inactivity. Finally, they buried(埋) them bth in a hle. Within eight weeks these tw parts were almst cmpletely gne.
Wei and Zhang expect that rbts like these can be used t deal with dangerus waste and then disappear naturally. They als hpe that such rbts can aid dctrs in peratins and then safely break dwn inside the bdy.
Hwever, it's imprtant t nte that the technlgy is still in very early stages. “If we truly want t have a bidegradable rbt,” Hartmann says, “we als need t make sure its electrnics and pwer parts are bidegradable.”
35. What is special abut the rbtic arni and the cntrller in Paragraph 2?
A. They are green.B. They are hard.C. They are intelligent.D. They are affrdable.
36. What is mentined in Paragraph 5 abut sft rbts?
A. Hw they wrk.B. Where they can be used. C. Their challenges.D. Their perfrmance.
37. What can we learn frm the passage?
A Sft rbts are widely used t clean up e-waste.
Sft rbts have t rest fr a week after heavy use.
C. The designing f sft rbts brrws ideas frm nature.
D Mechanical engineering ffers new ways t run sft rbts.

When cnsidering the kind f experience that makes life better, mst peple first think that happiness depends n experiencing pleasure: gd fd, gd jbs, all the cmfrts that mney can buy. If we culdn't have these, we might as well sit in frnt f the televisin n a quiet evening.
Pleasure is an imprtant part f the quality f life, but by itself it desn't bring happiness. When peple think further abut what makes a wrthy life, they tend (倾向于) t mve beynd pleasant memries and begin t remember ther events, ther experiences that verlap(有重叠) pleasurable nes but fall int a grup with a separate name: enjyment. Enjyable events take place when peple have nt nly satisfied a need r met sme earlier expectatin, but als achieved smething unexpected,
Enjyment is characterized by a sense f curisity, f achievement. Playing a tennis game that imprves ne’ s ability is enjyable, as is reading a bk that shws things in a new light, as is having a cnversatin that leads us t express ideas we didn't knw we had. Nne f these experiences may be especially pleasurable when they are taking place, but when we think back n them afterwards, we wuld say. “That really was fun” and wish they wuld happen again. After an enjyable event we knw that we have changed, and grwn.
Experiences that give pleasure can als give enjyment, but the tw feelings are quite different. Fr example, everybdy takes pieasure in eating. Hwever, t enjys fd is mre difficult — yu have t payenugh attentin t a meal, s as t sense and tell its varius tastes. As this example suggests, we can experience pleasure withut any psychic energy, while enjyment happens nly as a result f full attentin. A persn can fecl pleasure withut any effrt, as lng as certain parts in his brain are stimulated (刺激). But it's impssible t enjy a tennis game r a bk withut full attentin. It's fr this reasn that pleasure des nt last lng, nr des it make us grw. Grwth requires full attentin t gals that are new, that are relatively challenging.
Withut enjyment, life will g n, and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily n luck and the external(外部的) envirnment. T achieve persnal cntrl ver the quality f experience, hwever, we need t learn hw t build enjyment. int what happens day in, day ut.

40. The wrds“psychic energy” in Paragraph 4 are clsest in meaning t .
