Once they btained DNA sequences (序列) frm tw fssils (化石) , mammths and mastdns, the team cmpared them with DNA frm mdern elephants. They fund t their amazement that mdern frest and savanna elephants are as distinct frm each ther as Asian elephants and mammths.
The scientists used detailed genetic analysis t prve that the African savanna elephants and the African frest elephants have been distinct species fr several millin years. The divergence f the tw species tk place arund the time f the divergence f Asian elephants and wlly mammths. This result amazed all the scientists.
There has lng been debate in the scientific cmmunity that the tw might be separate species, but this is the mst cnvincing scientific evidence s far that they are indeed different species.
Previusly, many naturalists believed that African savanna elephants and African frest elephants were tw ppulatins f the same species, despite the elephants’ significant size differences. Since 1950, all African elephants have been cnserved as ne species. Fr children aged ne t tw, distractin (分散注意力) and redirectin are ften mst effective, nting that children this yung are explring their envirnment and willful misbehavir is quite few. But after age tw, children understand their actins can cause a reactin frm thers and may increasingly test that ut. Parents f children aged three t five surveyed were mre likely t use warnings, speak firmly, and give timeuts.
During these preschl ages, parents shuld let them knw what their misbehavir will lead t. A recent study f ancient and mdern elephants has cme up with the unexpected cnclusin that the African elephant is divided int tw distinct (不同的) species.
The discvery was made by researchers at Yrk and Harvard universities when they were examining the genetic relatinship between the ancient wlly mammth and mastdn t mdern elephants — the Asian elephant, African frest elephant, and African savanna elephant.
The savanna elephant has an average shulder height f 3.5 metres while the frest elephant has an average shulder height f 2.5 metres. The savanna elephant weighs between six and seven tns, rughly duble the weight f the frest elephant. But the fact that they lk s different des nt necessarily mean they are different species. Hwever the prf lay in the analysis f the DNA.
Alfred Rca, assistant prfessr in the Department f Animal Sciences at the University f Illinis, said, “We nw have t treat the frest and savanna elephants as tw different units fr cnservatin purpses. Since 1950, all African elephants have been cnserved as ne species. Nw that we knw the frest and savanna elephants are tw very distinct animals, the frest elephant shuld becme a bigger pririty (优先) fr cnservatin purpses.”
