Scanning an item at checkut is smething we take fr granted in this age f cnvenience. We can thank barcdes fr that. It’s been 50 years since the beginning f this game-changing technlgy.
On March 31, 1971, a histric meeting tk place in New Yrk City and included executives frm sme f the tp US cmpanies at that time. The meeting agreed t create a system t uniquely identify every single prduct, calling it the Glbal Trade Item Number (GTIN), the cre f barcdes, accrding t El Mund, a Spanish newspaper.
What infrmatin des a barcde cntain? Where the prduct cmes frm, where it has been, its price, expiratin (过期时间)... yu name it. The first tw numbers indicate where that prduct has been identified (the place), then there is the number that crrespnds t the manufacturing cmpany and the rest f the numbers uniquely identify each unit that the manufacturer makes.
Barcdes dn’t nly identify the categry f gds but als manage the number f gds. Fr example, if there are 10 cartns f milk and a custmer takes ne, it will be registered when it is scanned at the cash cunter, s the stre wner knws there are nine cartns left and manages stck accurately.
“Its creatin allwed the first digitizatin in the cntrl f the stck,” Jsé María Bnmatí, general directr f AECOC, a Spanish cmmercial assciatin, tld El Mund. “The unique identificatin f prducts at a glbal level was the key that pened the dr t retail as we knw it tday.”
In the past five decades, barcdes have prvided many cnveniences fr cmmerce. The next generatin f barcdes, such as QR cdes, can hld vastly mre infrmatin. “Their use, fr example, can tell cnsumers if a prduct cntains allergens (过敏原), if it is rganic and infrmatin n its carbn ftprint. Ultimately, this prvides cnsumers with a greater level f trust and lyalty relating t the prducts they buy,” accrding t GS 1, the rganizatin that develps and maintains the glbal barcdes standard.
28.What des the article tell us abut barcdes?
A.They were first intrduced five decades ag.
B.They were develped by a Spanish executive.
C.The GTIN was the first versin f a barcde.
D.They are used by sme f the tp cmpanies wrldwide.
29.What infrmatin can peple get by scanning barcdes?
      A.A prduct’s carbn ftprint.
      B.A prduct’s marketing cmpany.
C.The allergens cntained in a prduct.
D.The remaining amunt f a certain prduct in stck.
30.What is the benefit f barcdes accrding t Jsé María Bnmatí?
A.They help imprve the quality f gds.
B.They furthered the develpment f retail.
C.They ffer cnsumers a wider chice f prducts.
D.They save cmpanies frm having t stck prducts.
      31.What is the attitude f GS 1?
      A.Cncerned B.Dubt C.Critical D.Psitive
      D
Search “txic parents”, and yu’ll find mre than 38, 000 psts, largely urging yung adults t cut ties with their families. The idea is t safeguard ne’s mental health frm abusive parents. Hwever, as a psychanalyst (精神分析学家), I’ve seen that trend in recent years becme a way t manage cnflicts in the family, and I have seen the severe impacts estrangement (疏远) has n bth sides f the divide. This is a self-help trend that creates much harm.
“Canceling” yur parent can be seen as an extensin f a cultural trend aimed at crrecting imbalances in pwer and systemic inequality. Tday’s scial justice values respnd t this reality, calling n us t criticize ppressive and harmful figures and t gain pwer fr thse wh have been pwerless. But when adult children use the mst effective tl they have – themselves – t gain a sense f security and ban their parents frm their lives, the rles are simply switched, and the pain nly deepens.
Often, what I see in my practice are cases f family cnflict mismanaged, pwer dynamics turned upside dwn rather than negtiated. I see the terrible effect f that trend: situatins with n winners, nly islated humans wh lng t be knwn and feel safe in the presence f the ther.
The catch is that after estrangement, adult children are nt suddenly less dependent. In fact, they feel abandned and betrayed, because in the uncnscius, it desn’t matter wh is ding the leaving; the feeling that remains is “being left”. They carry the ghsts f their childhd, tackling the emtinal reality that thse wh raised us can never truly be left behind, n matter hw hard we try.
What I have fund is that mst f these families need repair, nt permanent break-up. Hw can ne learn hw t negtiate needs, t create bundaries and t trust? Hw can we lve thers, and urselves, if nt thrugh accepting the limitatins that cme with being human? Gd relatinships are the result nt f a perfect level f harmny but rather f successful adjustments.
T pursue dialgue instead f estrangement will be hard and painful wrk. It can’t be a single prject f “self-help”, because at the end f the day, real intimacy (亲密关系) is achieved by wrking thrugh the injuries f the past tgether. In mst cases f family cnflict, repair is pssible and preferable t estrangement – and it’s wrth the wrk.
32.Why d yung peple cut ties with the family?
A.T gain an independent life.B.T restre harmny in the family.
C.T prtect their psychlgical well-being.D.T fllw a tendency twards scial justice.
33.What des the underlined wrd “catch” in Paragraph 4 mean?
      A.Respnse.B.Prblem.C.Operatin.D.Emphasis.
34.T manage family cnflict, the authr agrees that yung adults shuld________.
A.break dwn bundariesB.gain pwer within the family
C.live up t their parents’ expectatinsD.accept imperfectin f family members
35.What’s the authr’s purpse f writing the passage?
      A.T advcate a self-help trend.B.T justify a cmmn scial value.
      C.T argue against a current practice.D.T discuss a means f cmmunicatin.

In a castal village named Seafrd, lived a curageus yung wman named Amelia. Amelia was knwn thrughut Seafrd fr her adventurus nature. Frm the mment she culd walk, she wuld eagerly run twards the crashing waves, feeling the sand between her tes and the cl spray f the cean mist n her face. One sunny mrning, while Amelia was walking alng the shre, she nticed a grup f restless seagulls abnrmally circling abve the crashing waves. Their unusual calls eched (回) thrugh the air. Cncerned fr their well-being, she fllwed their flight pattern, her instincts guiding her tward danger.
