Decades ag, my friend Caetlin received a special assignment frm the pet Rbert L. Hass, wh instructed each student t memrize three pems f their chsing frm The Nrtn Anthlgy f American Literature—nt fr any urgent exam reasn, he claimed, but instead t prepare them fr their unavidable future ccasins when yu’re ging t be alne, and petry is ging t be all yu have.
If the task was as a strange ne, it’s because the act f memrizing a pem feels curiusly ld-fashined in an era when few f us encunter petry at all. When I was in graduate schl, wrking tward a degree in English literature, I mstly limited myself t essays. It was nly in my 40s that I began t change my ways. It happened in a flight t Seattle. Fr hurs, I read nthing else but a pem. Smetimes I spke its lines alud, my vice masked by the airplane’s thrum. Smetimes I went thrugh the whle pem at nce, and smetimes I repeated a single stanza (诗节) ver and ver, and by the time my plane landed n the West Cast, I had the whle thing, all 40 lines f it, in my head. Because the prcess is as simple as it is very bring, memrizing a great pem always begins as a crime. The bredm f repetitin reduces the great charm it has. But as yu run yur hands thrugh the rck, the lines at last cme tgether again, and the scattered text transfrms back int a treasure.
In ther wrds, petry survives cntinuusly by becming a part f thse wh read it. It can d s nly because it is s specific, s entirely different frm us, that taking it in expands ur wn sense f what we are.
Sme f the pems I’ve memrized are already fading, and that’s fine. I knw that if I spend a little time with them, they’ll sing in me again. Others keep beating in me like a new pulse. I wn’t prmise yu that memrizing petry will make yur life better, but it will make yu mre: mre in tuch with language, with ther minds, maybe with what yu might yet becme.
24.Why did Rbert L. Hass advise students t read pems?
A.T becme literature prfessrs.B.T prepare fr the cming exams.
C.T cmpse mre riginal pems.D.T relieve their future lneliness.
25.Why des the authr say that memrizing a pem begins as a crime?
A.It’s ut f date t recite pems.B.Repetitin wastes a lt f time.
C.Repetitin ruins the pem’s beauty.D.It’s a shame t read pems n plane.
26.Hw des understanding petry influence us?
A.By bradening self-understanding.B.By refreshing ur gd memries.
C.By helping us survive the hard life.D.By reminding us t frget the past.
27.What is the authr’s attitude twards memrizing petry in the last paragraph?
A.Dubtful.B.Reserved.C.Appreciative.D.Critical.

Hummingbirds are the Olympic gymnasts in the wrld f birds. They zip arund at remarkable speeds, hver (悬停) in place and fly in all directins, including backward and while upside dwn. T achieve such agility (敏捷), hummingbirds use distinct mdes f visual prcessing t cntrl different types f flight, researchers reprt in the Prceedings f the Ryal Sciety B. In particular, the scientists uncvered a seemingly unique mde that guides hummingbirds’ speed when they are flying frward.
The findings cme frm an analysis f mre than 3,500 hummingbird flights inside a 12-ft-lng tunnel with a resting spt at ne end and a feeder at the ther. Mving patterns prjected n the tunnel walls dminated the hummingbirds’ sense f ptic flw — the perceived mtin f surrundings while traveling thrugh the wrld. The speed f that mtin, called pattern velcity, is a key visual cue (线索) that many animals use t adjust their wn speed and psitin as they mve.
The researchers expected that if the hummingbirds were using pattern velcity cues t cntrl their frward flight speed, they wuld see the birds speed r slw in line with vertical stripes prjected n the side walls. But instead “it seemed mre the case that they have their wn internal speed meter” fr frward flight, says study c-authr Vikram Baliga, a cmparative physilgist at the University f British Clumbia.
Any mvement that challenged the hummingbirds’ expectatins f hw their surrundings shuld change slwed the birds dwn — even vertical stripes mving tward the feeder, which the researchers expected wuld make them speed up. When hvering r mving up r dwn, hwever, the birds based their mtr cmmands n the prjected patterns they saw.
The ability t switch between these different flight mdes highlights a hummingbird’s unique agility, says Dug Altshuler, a zlgist at the University f British Clumbia specializing in cmplex lcmtin. Hummingbird brains have evlved t make rapid transitins frm visual signals t mtr utputs. “They excel at taking in lts f cmplicated visual infrmatin and making a safe flight plan ut f that.”
28. What is the key discvery abut hummingbirds’ flight cntrl?
A. It relies entirely n ptic flw.B. It uses distinct visual strategies.
C. It navigates by feeder lcatins.D. It adjusts flight via vertical stripes.
29. Why were mving patterns prjected in the tunnel?
A. T test light sensitivity.B. T study ptic flw’s rle.
C. T measure maximum speed.D. T bserve feeding behavir.
30. What can be inferred abut hummingbirds’ frward flight cntrl frm paragraph 3?
A. Muscle strength drives their flight.B. Vertical stripes guide their navigatin.
C. Their speed matches prjected patterns.D. Their speed adjustments are self-regulated.
31. Accrding t Altshuler, hummingbirds achieve remarkable flight agility by .
A. prcessing visual data efficientlyB. reacting t visual feedback instantly
C. fllwing fixed flight rutes cmpletelyD. using an internal speedmeter cnsistently
D
Beethven is a giant f classical music. And the ne with the mst influence at least when it cmes t pian cmpsitins. That’s accrding t a study in the jurnal EPJ Data Science.
If yu’re wndering hw data analysis culd determine smething as abstract as cultural influence, it’s wrth remembering the great thing abut music: it’s the mst mathematical f the art frms we actually can deal with because a lt f it is symblic. The music is written in symbls that are cnnected in time.
Juyng Park is a theretical physicist at the Krea Advanced institute f Science and Technlgy. Park and his clleagues cllected 900 pian cmpsitins by 19 cmpsers cvering the Barque, Classical and Rmantic perids, frm 1700 t 1910. Then they used that mathematical quality t their advantage by dividing each cmpsitin int what they called “cde wrds,” a grup f ntes played at the same time—in ther wrds, a chrd. They then cmpared each chrd t the chrds that came befre it. “Our cmputer mdel allws us t calculate the degree f shared meldies between past and future wrks.” said Park.
The cmpser with tp marks fr nvelty was Rachmaninff. But when the researchers lked at thse chrd transitins acrss all 19 cmpsers, it was Beethven wh was mst heavily brrwed frm—meaning, at least amng the cmpsers in this analysis, his influence was the largest.
Their study cmes with a cuple caveats. The researchers nly cnsidered pian cmpsitins in this wrk—-nt rchestral wrks. And by nly studying chrd transitins, their cnclusins wuldn’t capture artists wh had influence in ther ways. “It’s well understd that Mzart’s cntributin t music mainly cmes frm the musical frms that he devised. That was nt very well captured by ur mathematical mdeling.”
32. Hw did the researchers cnduct the study?
A. They turned music cmpsitins int written symbls.
B. They lked at hw chrds differed frm previus nes.
C. They cllected 900 pieces frm cntemprary cmpser.
D. They calculated the number f chrds in each music piece.
33. What can be knwn frm the research findings?
A. Beethven was best at cming up with new chrds.
B. Beethven brrwed heavily frm anther cmpser.
C. Rachmaninff’s chrds were mst unlike previus nes.
D. Rachmaninff’s chrds were cpied by future cmpsers.
34. What des he underlined wrd “caveats” prbably mean?
A. warningsB. benefitsC. cstsD. prfs
35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr this passage?
A. Beethven Regarded as a Giant f Classical Music.
B. Similarity between Music and Math Investigated.
C. Beethven’s Majr Musical Cntributin Cnfirmed.
D. Cmputer Analyses Cnfirm Beethven’s Influence.
