Last September, I visited a prtected wetland near my hme. Thugh I’d used binculars (望远镜), field guides and sng identificatin apps all summer while hiking, this was the first time I nly watched birds.
I’ve always cared abut birds and have written abut them as a science writer, but the mment I decided with purpse t devte time and energy t bird-watching marked my transfrmatin int a birder. Seven mnths later, I’ve seen 452 species, learned dzens f calls, tracked rare birds, and even went lking fr wls at night.
I didn’t start frm zer. My career spent writing abut nature taught me abut the habitats; jurnalism allwed me t quickly familiarize myself with new tpics and new peple. I crwdsurced tips n scial media platfrms and went ut with experienced birders. I used tls available t beginners.
Many regard birding as just turning lives int checklist numbers, but even that is harder withut knwledge. T find the birds, yu have t knw them. And in ding that, much else falls int space.
Birding has bsted my time utdrs, pushing me t explre my neighbrhd in ways I never wuld have: amazing ht spts in industrial areas, wastewater treatment plants, and randm parks. I seem imperius t heat, cld, hunger, and thirst. My mind quiets, fcusing nly n the present.
I als feel a much deeper cnnectin t nature, which I’ve lng written abut but always remained slightly distant frm. Every bird I meet gives clr and sund t the facts I nce knew nly frm bks. Birds I assumed lived far away — glden eagles, cranes — have all appeared within an hur f my huse.
Peple call birding an escape frm reality. I reject that. Instead, I see it as invlvement with the true reality. I dn’t need t knw scial media drama when I can spend an hur hunting fr a rare bird. The chice is bvius.
Spring is cming. New birds will sn fld the Bay Area. I can’t wait.
      4. What is paragraph 1 mainly abut?
      A. When the authr became a birder.B. The authr’s early interest in birding.

Huge piles f research n diet are published annually. The mst shcking f these get reprted in the media. All claim t be based n the latest research and each claims t prve the last study wrng. D scientists really nt knw what’s gd fr us, r is the news reprt t blame fr the cnfusin?
Misleading media cverage plays a rle, but publicatin bias (偏见) is ne majr surce: studies that shw surprising results are mre likely t get published. “What yu see published in the nightly news is the end result f a system where everyne is encuraged t cme up with a psitive result,” says Vinay at Oregn Science University.
One way t get arund this prblem is t cnduct large, randmized cntrlled trials, which invlve randmly assigning participants t different grups t cntrl variables. But these kinds f studies are difficult t d fr fds, as few wuld risk eating habits n chance; fewer still sustain changes lng enugh t benefit. Instead, nutritin scientists usually bserve what peple eat by asking them t fill ut fd diaries, and then track the health f participants ver a given perid f time.
In these “bservatinal” studies, peple track their diets while ging abut their lives. Differences between subjects in what they d utside f mealtimes can make all the difference. Peple wh eat what is seen as an unhealthy diet — with mre fast fd, fr instance — might have unhealthy lifestyles in ther ways, such as smking. Cnsequently, dietary effects are hard t set apart.
Because f these difficulties, even tday’s mst recmmended dietary advice lacks gd quality evidence. This desn’t mean we can eat as much cake as we like. But it des suggest that within limits f cmmn sense, ne way f eating is abut as gd as anther. While admittedly simple advice, it remves the pressure t cnstantly run after the latest amazing diet r fear seemingly harmful fds. Within reasn, trusting yur stmach is mstly fine.
      8. What phenmenn is presented in paragraph 1?
      A. Scientists fail t figure ut truth.B. News spreads cnfusin n purpse.
      C. Research n diet astnishes peple.D. Media reprts cnflicting diet studies.

      A. Chclate unexpectedly aids weight lss.B. Calrie restrictin helps t slw aging.
      C. Effects f zer fat diet require further tests.D. Whle grain diet imprves heart health.
      10. What d paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly discuss?
      A. The reliability f self-reprted diet data.B. Hw lng-term diet tracking imprves health.
      C. The main prblems in studying dietary effects.D. Hw lifestyle factrs affect diet research results.
      11. What is the authr’s suggestin fr fd chice?
      A. Avid ptentially unhealthy fds.B. Cnsume varieties f fds.
      C. Cunt n the latest dietary advice.D. Fllw bdy signals sensibly.

The newest, httest pwer cuple desn’t live in Hllywd. It’s actually the marriage f slar panels and reservirs (水库): Knwn as flatvltaics, these devices n simple flats (浮体) generate pwer while shading the water belw.
The primary advantage f the technlgy is that n trees need t be cleared fr slar farms. As an added bnus, the water cls the panels, increasing their efficiency. Research shws that flatvltaics n just a small share f glbal lakes and reservirs culd meet nearly a third f the US’s annual electricity demand.
As flatvltaic systems expand, with the market expected t grw 23% annually frm 2025 t 2030, scientists are studying their impact n ecsystems. “We shuldn’t be expanding clean energy at the cst f bidiversity lss,” warns Elisa Stephens, a researcher at the University f Califrnia, Davis. “This is a great pprtunity t increase ur research and develp smart designs and better sitting practices t have this happy marriage between a healthy, bidiverse ecsystem and renewable energy expansin.”
Mst flatvltaics are placed n reservirs. When paired with the existing water pwer plants, the panels can generate additinal daytime pwer. This cmbinatin can make up fr seasnal drps in water r sunlight, ensuring a mre stable yearly utput.
Thugh artificial, reservirs hst lts f water life that flatvltaics can interact with. Wuld this bring risks r benefits? “Our custmers have seen migrating (迁徙的) birds feeding and resting n the flats,” reprts Chris Bachman f a leading flatvltaics cmpany.
Eclgical cnsideratins get trickier where there are unfreseen knck- n effects. Experiments shw that shading frm panels can slw the grwth f algae that fish eat and als reduce harmful algae, affecting the fd chain. Flats can hide fish frm birds that hunt them but may als serve as safe habitats fr these birds. “We need t mnitr fr lng perids t understand the big picture,” says freshwater eclgist Simpsn Cards.
Scientists and cmpanies are discussing wider spacing between panels and aviding cnstructin during waterbirds’ sensitive perids, such as migratin and nesting. “There can definitely be that kind f eclgical balance,” says Stephens.
      12. Hw des the authr intrduce flatvltaics?
      A. By giving a technical definitin.B. By explaining hw they wrk.
      C. By relating them t a married cuple.D. By describing a ppular mvie scene.
      13. What is scientists’ majr cncern abut flatvltaics?
      A. Their influence n ecsystems and bidiversity.B. Their seasnal changes in pwer utput.
      C. Their high cst f cnstructin and maintenance.D. Their cmpetitin against traditinal slar farms.
      14. Why des the authr qute Chris Bachman in paragraph 5?
      A. T prvide evidence f custmer satisfactin.B. T shw a ptential benefit f flatvltaics.
      C. T nte the cmplexity f eclgical interactins.D. T draw attentin t prtecting migrating birds.
      15. What are scientists fcusing n?
      A. Cnducting the applicatin f wider panels.B. Develping smarter designs and practices.
      C. Prving the existence f eclgical balance.D. Aviding cnstructins n waterbird habitats.
