“Tw birds prbably can't feed their ffspring n their wn, s they need these helpers t help them, ” he said, adding that as each breeding pair prduces few yung, birds must be fund frm utside the family grup t help the yung survive. “What happens is that the nn-relatives cme int the grup, and they breed pretty quickly, usually in the first year, maybe the secnd year, and then they take sme time ff and sme f the ther birds breed, ” said Rubenstein. “But they’re frming these pairwise relatinships, in the sense that I might help yu this year, and then yu’ll help me in the future. ”
The results reveal that rather than helping birds at randm, starlings preferentially helped breeding birds that were related t them, particularly if they were brn in the same nest. Hwever, they als helped unrelated breeding birds, even when there were pprtunities t help relatives. The team fund helpers tended t aid specific breeding birds. Benge and his clleague Dr Michael Scullin, a cgnitive neurscientist at Baylr University in Texas, analysed 57 published studies that examined the use f digital technlgy in 411, 430 adults arund the wrld. The average age was 69 years ld and all had a cgnitive test r diagnsis. The scientists fund that using a cmputer, the Internet r sme cmbinatin f these was assciated with a lwer risk f cgnitive damage.
Mre wrk is needed t explain the findings, but the researchers suspect a tw-way relatinship underlies the results. In this scenari, peple with better thinking skills are mre likely t use digital devices, but there are als cgnitive benefits frm embracing the technlgy.
