Are yu ready t dust ff yur ski jacket? Yes, it’s that time f year when we start planning ur escape t the
muntains. Here’s all yu need t knw abut this seasn in the snw.
The new ski package
With the UK’s cst f living crisis, sme travelers have been priced ut f the market. The twenty-smething
skier has almst disappeared. S, it’s n wnder that the ski cmpany Actin Outdrs launched (发起) its package
aimed at 18- t 30-year-lds. At the same time, demand fr its all-inclusive and ecnmical family hlidays has
significantly utnumbered supply. Take, fr example, its Easter Family Week: it sld ut in five minutes f its
release in May.
The ski chalet (小屋) is here t stay
Ski chalets were‐by definitin‐a place where smene else did the cking. Nt anymre. Ov Netwrk is
ne f several cmpanies nw ffering them as self-cking hliday lets, and it has just added 28 fr winter 2024.
All are lcated in distant and thinly ppulated areas, and many are refreshingly (惊人地) affrdable, prvided f
curse that yu can gather a big enugh grup f friends r family t fill them.
Amng the new arrivals is the beautiful, pen-plan Chalet Lezpau in France. Admittedly, it’s a tw-mile drive
t the nearest lift, but fr a week frm 5 January it csts just €280 per persn fr a grup f 11 t stay there. The
cmpany has als launched a cancellatin plicy returning 90% f the mney yu pay up t tw days befre yur
arrival date.
21. What is the current situatin f UK’s turism?

This past Tuesday, I had my first ride in an autnmus car. The expectatin fr me was a bit like a kid
waiting fr hlidays. But when I shared my passin with friends, many warned me t make sure my life insurance
was paid in full befre getting int the car.
The car lked pretty much like any ther car n the rad. The mst amazing thing abut the experience was
hw un-amazing it was. I’ll admit t being a bit disappinted at hw nrmal it all seemed. I’m ready fr a car with
n driving wheel (方向盘) and a meeting table in the back. But it’ll be a lng time befre mst peple are ready t
g there. That’s why the self-driving engineers want t create a cmfrting sense f lasting. They think it may take
25 years befre we get fully autnmus cars. But whenever it arrives, rather than seeming like a great step frward,
the autnmus driving felt like just anther baby step in a line f cntinuus prgress.
That’s because the plan is a cmbinatin f human and autnmus driving. The car I experienced is designed
fr highway driving. If the human driver desn’t respnd in time, the autnmus driver assumes smething is
wrng and carefully guides the car t the shulder. At any pint, hwever, all the driver has t d t regain cntrl
is tuch the wheel r brake (刹车).
This cmbinatin will let the autnmus car industry grw ne step at a time s that sciety gets cmfrtable
with it. The earliest cnsumer mdels will prbably handle nly certain tasks like highway driving and parking.
Humans will still be respnsible fr the mre challenging steps like dealing with side streets. Gradually, ver a
perid f many years, the rle f the human driver will wind dwn.
24. What is the friends’ attitude twards the authr’s self-driving experience?
A. Favurable. B. Indifferent. C. Objective. D. Cncerned.
25. What can be inferred frm paragraph 2?
A. The authr was disappinted at the car.
B. The engineers express cautius ptimism.
C. Nt all the peple accept self-driving cars.
D. The car was equipped with mdern cmfrts.
26. Why des the authr think autnmus driving is nly a small step?
A. It pses a threat t humans.
B. Human driving still matters.
C. The technlgy is imperfect.
D. It nly targets highway drivers.
27. Which f the fllwing best describes the cmbinatin f human and autnmus driving?
A. Demanding. B. Challenging. C. Inspiratinal. D. Prgressive.
C
Destructive earthquakes rck the wrld frm time t time. Nthing can be dne t prevent them frm striking.
The best way t ease these future disasters is t draw maps f the underwrld, recrding every fault and tracking its
behavir.
T create thse maps, researchers emply little machines that sense and recrd all srts f vibratins (震动).
This wrk, histrically, has been extremely careful and smetimes inaccurate. When Zachary Rss, an assistant
gephysics prfessr, started in the field in the early 2010s, he sught a new way frward. “Even the best cmputer
prgrams at the time missed certain earthquakes. There had t be a better way,” he says. He cnducted the study in
Califrnia which is s gelgically active and there were mre data than human experts alne culd reasnably
handle.
In 2017 Rss started t fcus n tiny quakes. They might be harmless, but that desn’t make them unimprtant
- their waves can clarify each fault they pass thrugh, including the mre precarius, stress-laded nes that may
ne day crack and set ff a disaster. Rss and his clleagues set an algrithm (算法) upn the seismic (地震的)
recrd. The algrithm quickly identified nearly tw millin previusly hidden tiny quakes.
Hwever, his prgram culd nly find earthquakes in the seismic recrd that it was taught t recgnize. S
Rss turned t mre advanced tls: self-learning prgrams, sftware that culd take preexisting infrmatin and
make predictins abut the future - in this case, what a vastly wider variety f earthquakes might sund like. Very
quickly, these prgrams fund all srts f unfamiliar-sunding quakes - later cnfirmed by human scientists. “Yu
just see s many things that were cmpletely missed,” Rss says.
These AI learning prgrams can als be used t bst the speed and accuracy ( 精 确 度 ) f earthquake
early-warning systems - largely autnmus prgrams that frecast threats t life and prperty in the mments after
an earthquake starts and send peple emergency text messages befre seismic waves reach them. But fr all their
prmise, AI prgrams wn’t replace human scientists. “They’re just tls,” Rss says - nes that in time, he
suspects, will becme as rdinary as seismmeters (地震仪) themselves.
28. What inspired Rss t carry ut the new study?
A. The massive amunts f data available.
B. The gegraphical lcatin f Califrnia.
C. The limitatin f the traditinal methd.
D. The breakdwn f the cmputer prgrams.
29. What des the underlined wrd “precarius” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. unusual. B. unstable. C. inaccessible. D. incmparable.
30. What is the advantage f self-learning prgrams ver Rss’ algrithm?
A. They frecast nvel earthquakes.
B. They helped restre hidden faults. C. They culd detect missing things.
D. They relied n previus infrmatin.
31. What d we knw abut the AI prgrams frm the last paragraph?
A. They give warnings in advance.
B. They will replace seismmeters.
C. They utperfrm warning systems.
D. They serve as an efficiency bster.
D
Kyt’s cherry blssms - r sakura (樱花) - draw crwds frm acrss the wrld. But this year the flwers
blmed (开花) nearly tw weeks in advance.
Glbal warming, largely driven by fssil fuel (化石燃料), stimulated (刺激) temperatures s high in 2023 that
it became the httest year in histry. Warmer springs causing earlier blms is a phenmenn nt just related t
Kyt’s famus sakuras, but smething scientists are als bserving elsewhere - including in Washingtn D.C.
Althugh flwering times vary annually, the lng-term trend shws earlier blming in D.C. “In D.C., the advance
in blming is prbably cnsistent with, but nt scientifically credited t, human-caused climate change,” said
Gnzalez, a climate change scientist. Other pssible causal influences include the urban heat island effect, he nted.
That's where the research in Kyt is critical. The city’s sakura recrds g back mre than 1,200 years. In
2020, 2021, and 2023, Kyt’s sakura saw recrd-early blms. A 2022 study fund that human-caused climate
change is the primary reasn, pushing that seasn frward by rughly 11 days.
The early nset f spring and fllwing cherry tree blms can result in sme serius cnsequences that
include blssms mismatching with their pllinatrs ( 授 粉 者 ). And if winter cntinues t warm faster than
summer in much f the U.S., the amunt f expsure t cld weather that a tree requires in its winter perid may
nt be met - resulting in sme trees failing t flwer at all in the spring. Peak blm date may be advanced in the
future. But the end result f nt having any blssms, if there's n winter, may happen sner than wethink.
Nt nly are cherry trees a tl fr scientists t understand changing temperatures, but the trees’ flwering
als represents a “very visible” histrical and cultural symbl fr peple t celebrate the nset f spring. Fr thse
wh haven’t had the pprtunity t wander under a line f blming cherry blssm trees, Gnzalez says the
experience is similar t “walking thrugh a church.”
32. What d we knw abut the earlier blming in D.C.?
A. It results frm human activities.
B. It has nt been clearly studied.
C. It has an impact n glbal warming.
D. It leads t the urban heat island effect.
33. What is a pssible result f earlierblming?
A. The cherry trees will becme extinct.
B. Winters get warm faster thansummers.
C. There will be a shrtage f pllinatrs.
D. It may bring abut eclgical disturbance.
34. What is the significance f cherry blssms?
A. Bringing spiritual cmfrt. B. Offering histrical recrds.
C. Preventing extreme weather. D. Spreading cultural knwledge.
35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. The cherry trees rush t an early blm.
B. Scientists predict cherry trees’ blm timing.
C. This year’s cherry blssm: a warning sign.
D. Early cherry blssm peak: a natural wnder.

根据第二段中“This wrk, histrically, has been extremely careful and smetimes inaccurate.”
根据第三段中“stress-laded nes that may ne day crack and set ff a disaster”可判断,包括那些更
根据第四段中“self-learning prgrams, sftware that culd take preexisting infrmatin and make
predictins abut the future...”
故选A。
根据文章最后一段中“These AI learning prgrams can als be used t bst the speed and accuracy

根据文章第四段中“The early nset f spring and fllwing cherry tree blms can result in sme
serius cnsequences that include blssms mismatching with their pllinatrs.”
故选A。C
