this: d nthing abut trees. Stp fiddling with them, thinking that we can deal with climate
change better than nature. If we fiddle, ur Rmes will burn.
The Hidden Life f Trees argued that trees are scial. It shws that they can be ur

As part f a pst-fire respnse and recvery prject, the Debris Flw Hazard Team
(泥石流危害小组) is engaging in several studies t better understand the drivers f pst-
fire debris flws and imprve pst-fire hazard assessments acrss the Pacific Nrthwest.
Wildfires make debris flws easy t happen, a fast-mving mixture f water, sil, and rck
that can cause prperty damage and lss f life.
After a wildfire, emergency managers need rapid answers t the questins: Where are
debris flws likely? Hw much rain will it take t cause a debris flw? And hw big will
that debris flw be? Researchers are cnducting applied research and emergency hazard

assessments t answer these questins. Evaluated burn areas they’ve assessed included the
nearly 2021 Dixie fire, the 2020 Labr Day wildfires, and many f the 2021 wildfires in
      Washingtn.
The mdels used fr hazard assessment have been develped and tested in drier places.
But the mdels have nt been tested widely in wetter places. Are the mdels accurate fr
wetter regins? Researchers have begun mnitring pst-fire debris-flw activity in wetter
places t answer the questin. Pst-fire mnitring invlves measuring the rainfall within
the burned areas and recrding the flw respnse after rainstrms. The bserved flw
respnse is cmpared t the predicted pssibility. If the mdel predicted a high pssibility
f debris flw and there was a debris flw, the mdel gt it right.
Recent data bespeaks bth similarities and differences in debris-flw prcesses
between the areas with higher humidity (湿度) and drier areas. Fr example, in the 2021
Dixie fire, majr debris flws were caused by shrt bursts f intense rainfall like they are in
drier places. In cntrast, debris flws in the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire were caused by lng time
rainfall. Cntinued bservatin and testing is expected t lead t an imprved set f hazard
      assessment mdels.
Other frequently asked questins after wildfires are: Hw far will debris flws travel?
What will be impacted? And hw lng will the burned areas remain dangerus? These
questins are presently nt reslved in current debris-flw hazard assessments, but the
researchers are ding research t prvide answers sn.
