Our cmmn sense is that prfessinal excellence requires frmal training, but excellence in the rest f life des nt. Wrk demands discipline and training; leisure is easy and enjyable and cmes naturally.
When ur wrk is mst demanding, we typically define leisure as its ppsite: cmplete inactivity. Fr example, when a burned-ut 51-year-ld CEO f a $68 billin investment firm abruptly quit his jb in 2022, he explained t reprters what he planned t d next: “I just want t g sit at the beach and d nthing.” Even if we’re nt finding ur wrk s tiring as his, we still talk abut taking a break frm wrk, which allws us t reenergize — in rder t wrk mre and better. Either way, we’re defining leisure in relatin t wrk.
I reject this whle way f thinking. Leisure is a valuable, cnstructive part f life, and we misunderstand leisure when we define it as wrk’s ppsite. We may think that the best way t get happier is, like the CEO, t “g sit at the beach and d nthing.” But researchers have fund that this kind f d-nthing leisure, including vacatin travel, prvides nly minr, temprary bsts f happiness. What gives us mre sustained well-being are pursuits invlving scial engagement, persnal reflectin, and utdr activities.
As a prfessr, I want everything I d t be generative, instead f wasting a minute n fruitless pursuits. Leisure is nt straightfrward r easy. I’d like t use my nnwrk activities, as much as my wrk nes, t becme a wiser, happier, mre effective persn. We must treat leisure with every bit as much seriusness as we d ur careers. When we understand and practice leisure prperly, we can achieve ur best selves — and even ur capacity t transfrm sciety fr the better.
The pint here is that just as we shuld be excellent at ur jbs, we shuld becme excellent at leisure. Ding leisure well will generate the srt f grwth in ur well-being that wrk cannt prvide. If yu dn’t d leisure well, yu will never find life’s full meaning.
