Over the next few years, he travelled acrss Britain and spent days with the trees selected with the help f the Ancient Tree Frum, the Tree Cuncil and the Wdland Trust. Drawing is nt nly an act f care and a demand fr preservatin, but it “gives me that interface between my passin fr the natural wrld and my creativity,” Brwn says. It has als given him a different perspective n the passage f time. “I’m an ld man yet I’m nly 71, and sme f the trees I’ve drawn are 1,000 years ld. A new study reveals that pigens (鸽子) can tackle sme prblems just like artificial intelligence, enabling them t slve difficult tasks that might challenge humans. Previus research has therized that pigens emply a prblem-slving strategy, invlving a trial-and-errr apprach, which is similar t the apprach used in AI mdels but differs frm humans’ reliance n selective attentin and rule use. T examine it, Brandn Turner, a psychlgy prfessr at the Ohi State University, and his clleagues cnducted the new study.
In the study, the pigens were presented with varius visual images, including lines f different widths and angles, and different types f rings. The pigens had t peck (啄) a buttn n the right r left t indicate the categry t which the image belnged. If they gt it crrect, they received fd; if they were wrng, they received nthing. Results shwed that, thrugh trial and errr, the pigens imprved their accuracy in categrizatin tasks, increasing their crrect chices frm abut 55% t 95%.
Researchers believed pigens used assciative learning, which is linking tw phenmena with each ther. Fr example, it is easy t understand the link between “water” and “wet”. “Assciative learning is frequently assumed t be far t primitive t explain cmplex visual categrizatin like what we saw the pigens d,” Turner said. But that’s exactly what the researchers fund.
The researchers’ AI mdel tackled the same tasks using just the tw simple mechanisms that pigens were assumed t use: assciative learning and errr crrectin. And, like the pigens, the AI mdel learned t make the right predictins t significantly increase the number f crrect answers. Fr humans, the challenge when given tasks like thse given t pigens is that they wuld try t cme up with rules that culd make the task easier. But in this case, there were n rules, which upsets humans.
What’s interesting, thugh, is that pigens use this methd f learning that is very similar t AI designed by humans, Turner said. “We celebrate hw smart we are that we designed artificial intelligence: at the same time, we regard pigens as nt clever animals,” he said.
8 What is the purpse f the new study?
      A T test a thery.B. T evaluate a mdel.
      C. T apply a strategy.D. T invlve an apprach.
      9. What were the pigens expected t d in the experiment?
      A. Draw circles.B. Crrect errrs.
      C. Cpy gestures.D. Identify images.
      10. What d pigens and AI have in cmmn accrding t the study?
      A. They are f equal intelligence.
      B. They create rules t make tasks easier.
      C. They respnd rapidly t rders frm humans.
      D. They emply simple ways t get things dne.
      11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Pigens’ trial-and-errr methd is revealedB. Pigens utperfrm humans in tugh tasks
      C. “Nt smart” pigens may be as smart as AID. AI mdels after pigens’ learning apprach
      D
Tday, petry and science are ften cnsidered t be mutually exclusive career paths. But that wasn’t always the case. The mathematician Ada Lvelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were bth accmplished pets. The pet Jhn Keats was a licensed surgen. Cmbining the tw practices fell ut f favr in the 1800s. But translating research int lyrics, haiku, and ther petic frms is resurging amng scientists as they lk fr alternative ways t inspire thers with their findings.
“Petry is a great tl fr questining the wrld,” says Sam Illingwrth, a pet and a gescientist wh wrks at the University f Western Australia. Thrugh wrkshps and a new science-petry jurnal, called Cnsilience, Illingwrth is helping scientists t translate their latest results int pems that can attract appreciatin frm thse utside f their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazn, a scientist frm the University f Helsinki in Finland, jined ne f Illingwrth’s wrkshps. In the wrkshp, she was gruped with ther scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-lng pem, which sptlighted water, a fluid that featured in all f the grup members’ research prjects. “It was a lt f fun, and surprisingly easy t write the pem,” Mazn says. She plans t cntinue writing. “We d a disservice (伤害) t urselves t think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used t cmmunicate scientific ideas,” Mazn says.
That viewpint is eched by Illingwrth, wh thinks science cmmunicatin initiatives are t ften dminated by public lectures with their hands-ff PwerPint slides. “Actually, when science cmmunicatin invlves writing and sharing pems, it invites a tw-way dialgue between experts and nnexperts,” he says. Scientist-pet Manjula Silva, an educatr at Imperial Cllege Lndn, agrees. Petry prvides a way t translate cmplex scientific cncepts int a language that everyne can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and pets are bth trying t understand the wrld and cmmunicate that understanding with thers. The distinctin between scientists and pets is less than peple might think. We’re all just peple with hpefully really interesting things t say and t share.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “exclusive” prbably mean?
      A. Alternative.B. Rare.C. Interactive.D. Separate.
13 What are Illingwrth’s wrkshps aimed at?
      A. Ppularizing a new science-petry jurnal.
      B. Inspiring utsiders t pursue their careers in science.
      C. Encuraging science cmmunicatin thrugh pems.
      D. Getting scientists t exchange ideas abut the latest research.
      14. Which f the fllwing ideas may Silva agree with?
      A. It is easier and mre interesting t write pems.
      B. Petry helps simplify cmplicated scientific ideas.
      C. Science shuldn’t be taught in public lectures with PPT slides.
      D. Pems are used t create dialgues between scientists and pets.
      15. What is the purpse f the article?
      A. T prmte an idea.B. T ffer suggestins.
      C. T prve an assumptin.D. T present cnflicting views.
