In 1943, a jury (评审委员会) f tp schlars and scientists elected James Yen ne f “the ten greatest revlutinaries f ur time”, listing him alng with Albert Einstein and Orville Wright. Yet all he did was teaching Chinese farmers t read.
Brn in Sichuan in 1890, James Yen graduated frm the Yale University in 1918. After this, he went t France t supprt Chinese wrkers wh had been sent t help the Allies in Wrld War I. Wrking t help and teach them t read and write letters, Yen realized hw much they needed educatin. Therefre, he wrte a simple literacy (读写能力) bk which used nly 1000 basic characters. In the 1920s, inspired by his experiences, Yen rganized the Natinal Assciatin f Mass Educatin Mvements. Its purpse was t bring literacy t the Chinese masses.
Fr 4000 years, reading and writing in China was nly dne by schlars. Everybdy knew, including the farmers themselves, that farmers were incapable f learning. That thrughly deep-seated pint f view was James Yen’s first “impssible” challenge t vercme. The secnd challenge was the Chinese language itself, cnsisting f many characters, each character having rich meanings. The third challenge was the pr technlgy and incnvenient transprtatin. Hw culd James Yen reach the 350 millin farmers back then? These were impssible dds, an impssibly huge gal.
Yet he made it and then expanded his gal: teach the rest f the Third Wrld t read. Practical reading prgrams started pumping ut literate peple like a gushing il well in the Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Kenya, Indnesia, Bangladesh and India. Peple became literate. Fr the first time in their entire histry, they culd access the accumulated knwledge f the human race.
What’s the secret f James Yen’s success? He tried t d smething that seemed impssible. He wrked lng hurs. And he started with what he had in frnt f him and gradually tk n mre and mre, little by little.
      24. Why did James Yen establish the Natinal Assciatin f Mass Educatin Mvements?
      A. T prmte his bk abut Chinese characters.B. T supprt Chinese wrkers in Wrld War I.
      C. T teach Chinese peple t read and write.D. T fllw the example f Einstein.
      25. What prblem did James Yen meet in teaching the farmers?
      A. Schlars’ prtest against it.B. The difficulty f the Chinese language.
      C. Farmers’ inability t learn.D. The shrtage f teaching methds.
      26. What can we learn abut James Yen frm Para. 4?
      A. He spread the agricultural knwledge arund.B. He led less develped cuntries t literacy.
      C. He helped sme cuntries build il wells.D. He changed the curse f histry.
      27. What is the main reasn fr James Yen’s success?
      A. His lifelng ambitin.B. His educatinal backgrund.
      C. His dwn-t-earth practice.D. His teaching experience.

Is frgiveness against ur human nature? T answer ur questin, we need t ask a further questin: What is the essence f ur humanity? Fr the sake f simplicity, peple cnsider tw distinctly different views f humanity.
The first view invlves dminance and pwer. In an early paper n the psychlgy f frgiveness, Drll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is mre aggressive than frgiving allws. Thse wh frgive are against their basic nature much t their harm. In his pinin, frgivers are cmprmising their well-being as they ffer mercy t thers, wh might then take advantage f them.
The secnd view invlves the theme f cperatin, mutual respect, and even lve as the basis f wh we are as humans. Researchers find that t fully grw as human beings, we need bth t receive lve frm and ffer lve t thers. Withut lve, ur cnnectins with a wide range f individuals in ur lives can fall apart. Even cmmn sense strngly suggests that the will t pwer ver thers des nt make fr harmnius interactins. Fr example, hw well has slavery wrked as a mde f scial harmny?
Frm this secnd viewpint f wh we are as humans, frgiveness plays a key rle in the bilgical and psychlgical integrity f bth individuals and cmmunities because ne f the utcmes f frgiveness, shwn thrugh scientific studies, is the decreasing f hate and the restratin f harmny. Frgiveness can break the cycle f anger. At least t the extent the peple frm whm yu are estranged (不和的) accept yur lve and frgiveness and are prepared t make the required adjustments. Frgiveness can heal relatinships and recnnect peple.
As an imprtant nte, when we take a classical philsphical perspective, we see the distinctin between ptentiality and actuality. We are nt necessarily brn with the capacity t frgive, but instead with the ptential t learn abut it and t grw in ur ability t frgive. The actuality f frgiving, in real situatins, develps with practice.
      28. Hw des Drll think f frgivers accrding t the early paper?
      A. They can be really pwerful.B. They deserve thers’ respect.
      C. They are acting ut f kindnessD. They might get themselves hurt.
      29. What des the example in Paragraph 3 illustrate?
      A. T fight is t grw.B. T give is t receive.
      C. T frgive is t punish.D. T dminate is t harm.
      30. What is the writer’s attitude tward frgiveness?
      A. Critical.B. Unclear.C. Favrable.D. Objective.
      31. What des the last paragraph suggest abut hw frgiveness develps?
      A. Frgiveness imprves with practice.B. Frgiveness happens easily with time.
      C. Frgiveness is practical and autmatic.D. Frgiveness cmes frm scial experiences.
      D
“Cnsumers cmplain that the mdern tmat has little flavr. It’s like a water bmb,” said Sanwen Huang, wh wrks at the Agricultural Genmics Institute at Shenzhen at the Chinese Academy f Agricultural Sciences. “Tmat farmers care abut yield, and the genetic variants related t yield are nt related t tasty tmat favrs.”
Hw can farmers ditch this unpleasant thing and recver the rich, sweet flavr f the tmat? T find ut, Huang and clleagues investigated which genes are related t tmates’ taste. The scientists created a 100-persn grup that sampled 160 tmates based n sensry qualities. Based n the grup’s feedback, the researchers identified dzens f chemical cmpunds (化合物) that culd be related t the tmat’s taste. Using a statistical mdel that determined the cncentratin f varius chemicals in the tmates, the scientists identified 33 mst imprtant flavr cmpunds. The researchers then measured the cntent f them in each f the tmates, and identified abut 250 genetic lci (基因座) that cntrlled tmat flavr. This finding revealed the genetic basis f tmat flavr.
But the researchers als wanted t determine why stre-bught tmates dn’t taste gd. It turns ut that mdern tmat varieties are selected accrding t qualities such as big size because buyers prefer large fruit, and firmness because it makes tmates easier t ship. Meanwhile, the quality f flavr has been ignred, said the researchers.
Vlatiles (挥发性物质), in particular, are essential fr gd flavr. The remval f specific vlatiles frm tmates results in significant reductin in peple’s liking. Mrever, refrigeratin can change a tmat’s vlatile cmpunds.
“But there is hpe fr a future filled with tasty, new varieties f stre-bught tmates, as ur results prvide a rad map fr imprvement f flavr. By wrking tgether, geneticists, bichemists, farmers and custmers can prvide better-flavred tmates fr ur sciety.” Huang said.
      32. Hw des the authr present the study in paragraph 2?
      A. By giving a definitin.B. By listing figures.
      C. By analyzing the cause.D. By making a cmparisn.
      33. What is the main idea f paragraphs 3-4?
      A. The reasns why stres favr such tmates.
      B. Sme qualities cnsumers prefer in buying tmates.
      C. The imprtance f vlatiles in deciding tmat flavr.
      D. The reasns why stre-bught tmates have little flavr.
      34. Which f the fllwing statements will Huang prbably agree with?
      A. The stre-bught tmates have a prmising future.
      B. Yield-related genetic variants prvide tasty tmates.
      C. Their research has changed a tmat’s vlatile cmpunds.
      D. Farmers and custmers can certainly prvide better-flavred tmates.
      35. What’s the purpse f the text?
      A. T persuade readers t buy tmates.B. T intrduce the high yielding tmates.
      C. T prve stre-bught tmates are tasteless.D. T infrm readers f the research abut tmat flavrs.
      第二节 七选五(共 5 小题,每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Upn reflectin f the ideal scial mral cde (准则) within ne sentence, it wuld be: be cnstructive (建设性的), nt destructive (毁坏性的). 36 Smetimes it is difficult t determine if an act is exactly cnstructive r destructive.
One prblem is that a behaviur can be bth cnstructive and destructive t different degrees. 37 Yu get a thught in yur mind t spank (打屁股) him as a punishment. Hwever, yu start t feel cnfused. It might shw him that nt listening t yu and breaking things is nt welcme, but n the ther hand, spanking him will hurt him physically and perhaps teach him t use frce in situatins later in life. 38 Hwever, thrugh yur wn reasning, yu can decide t what degree it wuld be beneficial r harmful t him and the situatin at hand.
39 Fr example, fr sme peple, cnstructin can never invlve vilence, while fr thers, it culd even be an unavidable part. Take the example f killing Hitler. Killing smene is definitely termed a destructive act. Hwever, in light f the circumstances, I wuld assume that the majrity f peple wuld agree that killing Hitler wuld be seen as a cnstructive act. Therefre, ur definitins ften determine ur values.
Additinally, cnstructin can be seen as gd t sme, and bad t thers. What a majrity might take as a cnstructive might be seen as destructive t a minrity. Is there a way t determine which side is crrect? It is almst impssible. 40 Many examples in histry have prved this.
Thugh I cnsider “Be cnstructive, nt destructive” the mst slid ne-sentence scial mral cde, it is nt withut its challenges. Hwever, I cannt imagine a better cde in a scial cntext.
      A. It is a handy and universal plicy.
      B. Thugh it sunds sensible, there are many trubles.
      C. There is n exact wrng r right in these mments.
      D. Other times it is difficult t disagree with the majrity.
      E. Being in the majrity des nt mean it is crrect, r mre prper.
      F. Say yur sn brke a glass vase after being warned several times.
      G. Anther truble t cnsider is the definitin we give t cnstructin and destructin.

When I asked arund the neighbrhd why, they warned me nt t g after her because they thught she was insane (精神失常的) and preferred staying alne after lsing her husband and nly daughter in an aircraft crash. After that, she stayed islated (孤立的) frm all the neighbrs, refusing all the care and help.
I ften saw her n the streets during the evening, but she was always by herself. She appeared weak and I always wanted t help her, but after hearing what my neighbrs had said abut her, I wasn’t sure whether I shuld.
One day, when I was n my way t the supermarket, ur paths crssed. I was walking past her and verheard her singing a tune. It immediately drew my attentin because my parents used t sing the same sng with me. I began t sing alng with her, and she smiled at me fr the first time. But when I smiled back, she quickly hurried her pace and went hme.
She seemed very different t me that day. I refused t trust my neighbrs’ claims that she had cut herself ff frm the rest f sciety because she was insane, s the next day, I kncked n her dr. Mrs Davis was hme, and instead f letting me in, she just lked at me silently thrugh the windw. I nticed her staring at me and was abut t walk t the windw when she quickly clsed the curtains.
The next day, I revisited her huse. “Hell, I brught yu smething,” I called ut t her. “It’s the recrd f the music yu were singing yesterday.”
