Bkstres, like wines, have different ntes, different flavrs, each ne distinct. There are the musty, quirky nes with randm piles and dusty rws, usually with bth used and new bks. There are the small indie stres charming and czy. Then there’s the big-bx with lng, straight rws, bright and dustless, usually basting a cafe and a kids sectin yu can get lst in.
My adratin fr bkstres is, withut a dubt, partly nstalgic(怀旧的). I came f age in the late 1990s, when Amazn was mstly knwn as a river in Suth America, phnes were nt smart and bkstres were dtted arund cities.
When my husband and I were dating, ur g-t date was t get cffee and walk arund bkstres tgether. It was the best. Wed mve slwly, meandering thrugh the religin sectin, the memirs, fictin, petry, histry. I’d pick up a title I’d heard abut and sit in the aisle reading a chapter. I’d find ne I’d never heard f and scan the back cver. We’d sip ur cffee and read each ther interesting paragraphs frm bks we fund.
I fell fr bkstres and fr my husband at the same time. S when stres began clsing dwn all ver America, we were bth srrwful. What were we suppsed t d with a night ut nw?
In a recent very infrmal and unscientific pll (调查) f my friends, I fund that many f us lve and miss physical bkstres. Friends described the feeling f discvery and explratin, the calming serenity f being surrunded by wrds and ideas. My wise friend Greg said, “Bkstres are like the best parties; Yu may discver a new friend r jin an unexpected cnversatin with a simple turn f yur head.”
I dream f an America with streets full f independent bkstres whse inventries (库存清单) cntradict ne anther. But right nw I’m rting fr any brick-and-mrtar (实体的) bk stre, really. Any place that reminds us that the material wrld is beautiful and wrth spending time in. Any place where we can learn hw t exist tgether in cmmunities chck-full f wrds and ideas. Any place where we may discver smething unpredictable and new. And if there’s cffee nearby, even better.
      4. What d the underlined wrds in Paragraph 2 suggest abut the late 1990s?
      A. Physical bkstres were ppular.

Tree-planting, intended t help draw dwn carbn dixide frm the atmsphere, has becme a synnym (同义词) fr climate actin. In ur cnstant fcus n trees, we’ve develped a fixed understanding: Trees absrb carbn dixide, end f stry. The reality is that trees dn’t grw well alne. They exist within cmplex cmmunities, helped alng by each ther as well as the animals they cexist with. The wdland isn’t nature’s nly carbn sink: Grasslands and ceans als help reduce the carbn level and rely n a healthy amunt f bidiversity.
That’s what the paper, published in Nature, wants t get acrss. C-authr Oswald J. Schmitz, a prfessr f eclgy at Yale University, said trees might nt be able t d their carbn-uptake jb efficiently withut the right animals in their ecsystem. That’s because animals animate the carbn cycle thrugh their behavir and rles in the ecsystem. He added that the very presence f wild animals culd cause feedback effects that change the ecsystem’s capacity t absrb, release, r transprt carbn.
In Serengeti, fr instance, the sharp decline in wildebeest (角马) ppulatins during the mid-20th century allwed grass t grw wildly, eventually prmting wildfires that cnsumed 80 percent f the ecsystem annually and led t a net release f carbn dixide int the atmsphere. When disease management and bans n illegal hunting helped animal ppulatins recver, a greater share f the carbn stred in plants was cnsumed by wildebeest and released as waste, keeping it in the system and restring the grassland as a carbn sink.
Researchers rarely cnsider wildlife cnservatin as a strategy t increase an ecsystem’s carbn strage capacity, said Schmitz. “They think that animals either aren’t imprtant enugh r that yu can’t take up carbn and cnserve animals at the same time,” he said. “Our message is that yu can and shuld. It can be a win-win fr bth bidiversity cnservatin and carbn uptake.” We need a full picture - with bth trees and animals - t explre nature’s full ptential.
      8. What can we learn frm the first paragraph?
      A. Actins are needed t reduce carbn dixide.
      B. Trees are a quick slutin t the climate crisis.
      C. Grasslands and ceans help maintain bidiversity.
      D. Peple are nt thinking thrugh trees prperly.
      9. What des the underlined wrd “animate” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Restart.B. Activate.C. Disturb.D. Break.
      10. What des the authr want t say by mentining wildebeest?
      A. The cnservatin f animals is still a serius issue.
      B. Human impacts bring abut the reductin in wildlife ppulatins.
      C. Animals can change the ecsystem’s capacity t stre carbn.
      D. The increase in animal species causes a decrease in carbn uptake.
      11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
      A. Animals Adjust Themselves t Climate Change
      B. Wdland Isn’t the Only Carbn Sink n the Earth
      C. Trees May Fail t Fulfil Their Duties withut Animals
      D. The Serengeti Ecsystem Needs Urgent Imprvement
      D
Cmmuting t and frm wrk can be a nightmare. Cars advance slwly in stp and g traffic, crawling frm ne traffic jam at stplights t the next. At peak rush hur especially, there is n chance f sailing thrugh a series f green lights. Nw, thanks t artificial intelligence, German researchers have fund a way t reduce time spent at the crssrads.
Called the KI4LSA prject and funded by the Ministry f Transprt and Digital Infrastructure, the innvatin is being tested. Scientists first studied algrithms taken frm a busy intersectin t learn abut traffic patterns and where imprvements were mst needed. Then, the technlgy, using high-reslutin cameras and radar sensrs, mre precisely captured the actual traffic situatin and detected the average speed f the cars and their waiting times. Finally, the AI uses deep enhanced learning algrithms t calculate the best switching behaviur fr the traffic lights and determine the best phase sequence t shrten waiting times at the crssrads.
The results are encuraging when it is being tried ut at a busy intersectin in Lemg, Germany. The intelligent lights are said t imprve traffic flw by 10 t 15 percent, which results in mney saved; the EU estimates that traffic jams create ecnmic damage that adds up t 100 billin eurs a year. Aside frm reducing cmmuting time, these traffic lights will reduce nise and CO2 emissins frm cars waiting at the crssrads.
Anther exciting develpment in this research is the K14PED prject, which studies pedestrians crssing the crssrads. Using AI as well as a 3D pints clud, researchers can identify hw many peple are waiting at a pedestrian crssing and whether sme f the disabled r elder peple will need extra time t crss the street. Such a needs-based system culd reduce pedestrian waiting time by 30 percent, which culd then decrease jaywalking (乱穿马路) by 25 percent.
Researchers are ptimistic that it will be adpted by many cuntries after the tests in the German twns f Lemg and Bielefeld. This technlgy is exciting news fr pedestrians and drivers alike. It encurages safety, prtects the envirnment, and may even give yu mre time t enjy yur mrning cffee befre heading ff t wrk!
      12. Why is AI used in the KI4LSA prject?
      A. T study traffic algrithms t cntrl CO2 emissins.
      B. T detect rad cnditins t reduce jam r speeding.
      C. T remind peple t pass in sequence fr a shrter wait.
      D. T adjust traffic signals t ensure efficiency at the crssrads.
      13. Which f the fllwing is true accrding t the passage?
      A. The intelligent lights serve the mere purpse f reducing cmmuting time.
      B. The better traffic flw is imprved, the less ecnmic damage is caused.
      C. The mre cars are waiting at the crssrads, the mre nise is reduced.
      D. The effect f traffic jams is heavier n envirnment than n ecnmy.
      14. What is the functin f K14PED prject?
      A. It mnitrs traffic cnditins at intersectins.
      B. It helps t estimate the number f jaywalkers.
      C. It ensures flexible crssing time fr pedestrians.
      D. It imprves the speed f vehicles n busy rads.
      15. What is the main idea f this passage?
      A. The intelligent lights ffer a blessing t transprtatin.
      B. The AI technlgy is bund t be a prmising industry.
      C. Attentive traffic service lends a helping hand t senirs.
      D. Digital traffic systems mark the beginning f smart cities.
