Eva, the Belgian Malinis, is hme nw, getting a well-deserved rest surrunded by new tys after nearly dying while prtecting her human frm a muntain lin.
The attack happened n May 16 in nrthern Califrnia when 24-year-ld Erin Wilsn headed dwn a path tward the Trinity River befre she fund herself crnered by a muntain lin. "I was just walking dwn the slpe with the dg running ahead f me. I turned arund and there was this cat just grwling at me and it attacked me," Wilsn tld NPR. "I screamed fr Eva and she came running."
Muntain lin attacks n humans are incredibly rare. Since 1890, Califrnia has recrded nly six fatal muntain lin attacks because f the animal's generally shy, reclusive(独处的) nature. Their preferred prey is deer, which are nrmally in abundance in their frested habitat, but recent drught cnditins have made fd scarce in sme areas. Wilsn thught that these cnditins made the sudden appearance f a slim wman lk like an attractive ptin.
T prtect her human, Eva leapt between Wilsn and the lin, tackling the wild cat and embarked n a life-and-death struggle between the tw animals. After a shrt fight, the muntain lin gt its jaws arund Eva's head and Wilsn fught t free her dg, hitting the lin with rcks in an attempt t break its grip. Eventually, Wilsn ran back t her truck and flagged dwn passing mtrist Sharn Hustn fetching an irn bar frm her truck. Wilsn and Hustn ran back dwn the trail and their cmbined effrts managed t frighten the big cat ff.
Wunded herself and shaken by the experience, Wilsn still managed t carry Eva back t the Animal Hspital. The 2-year-ld dg didn't need surgery, but her wunds were still extensive. Eva left the animal hspital n May 19 with surgical tape wrapped arund bth her frnt paws, and the veterinarian said she might lse sight in her left eye.
      24. What made Erin Wilsn the target f the muntain lin?
      A. The abundant deer in their frested habitat.
      B. The lack f prey due t extreme cnditins.
      C. The muntain lin's shy and reclusive nature.
      D. The slim and attractive appearance f Wilsn.
      25. What d the underlined wrds "embarked n" mean in paragraph 4?
      A. Made up. B. Went n.
      C. Strve t. D. Kicked ff.
      26. Hw did Wilsn drive the muntain lin ff?
      A. She freed a dg and threw rcks at it fiercely.
      B. She stpped a passing driver and brke its grip.
      C. She gathered lcal peple and shuted ludly at it.
      D. She used a tl and scared it away with anther driver.
      27. Which f the fllwing can best describe Eva accrding t the passage?

Yu are what yu eat—and what yu eat may be encded in yur DNA. Studies have indicated that yur genes play a rle in determining the fds yu find delicius r disgusting. But exactly hw big a rle they play has been difficult t figure ut. "Everything has a genetic cmpnent. even if it's small," says Janne Cle, a geneticist at the University f Clrad Schl f Medicine. "We knw that there is sme genetic cntributin t why we eat the fds we eat. Can we take the next step and actually lcate the regins in the genme (基因)?"
New research led by Cle has gtten a step clser. Thrugh a large-scale genmics analysis, her team has identified 481 genme regins that were directly linked t dietary patterns and fd preferences. The findings, which have nt yet been peer-reviewed, were presented last mnth at the American Sciety fr Nutritin's annual cnference.
The team based the new study n a 2020 Nature Cmmunicatins study by Cle and her clleagues that used data frm the U. K. Bibank, a public database f the genetic and health infrmatin f 500,000 participants. By scanning genmes, the new analysis was able t identify 194 regins assciated with dietary patterns and 287 linked t specific fds such as fruit, cheese, fish, tea and alchl. Further understanding hw genetics impact hw we eat culd reveal differences in nutritinal needs r disease risks.
"One f the prblems with a lt f these genmics studies is that they're very small. They dn't have enugh peple t really be able t identify genes in ways that are credible. This study had a huge grup f peple, s it's really pwerful." says Mnica Dus, a geneticist at the University f Michigan. "The ther thing that I thught was really great is that there are s many different traits that they're measuring related t diet including chlesterl(胆固醇), the bdy and sciecnmic backgrunds." As the research advances, Dus says, such genme analysis culd ptentially assist health care prviders and even plicymakers t address larger issues that affect fd access and health.
It's definitely true that it may cntribute t making sure there aren't fd deserts-areas which have limited access t fresh, healthy and affrdable fd—r t making sure that there's a higher minimum wage s that everyne can affrd t eat, althugh the jurney ahead remains lengthy and challenging
      28. Hw did researchers cnduct the present study?
      A. By invlving a substantial number f participants.
      B. By directly analyzing the data frm a public database.
      C. By building n a previus study based n large-scale data.
      D. By identifying genme regins assciated with dietary patterns.
      29. Which statement will Mnica Dus prbably agree with?
      A. Pwerful participants were invlved in the current study.
      B. The methds emplyed fr the previus studies were credible
      C. The genme analyses have helped address larger scial issues.
      D. Varius features linked t diet were cnsidered in the present study.
      30. What's the authr's attitude twards the present study?
      A. Critical. B. Optimistic. C. Skeptical. D. Indifferent.
      31. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. The benefits f latest large-scale diet-related genme analyses.
      B. The cntributin f genes t diet patterns and fd preferences.
      C. The significance f a newly published diet-related genme discvery.
      D. The intrductin f a research n identifying diet-related genme regins.
      D
Every decisin we make is arrived at thrugh hugely cmplex neurlgical prcessing. Althugh it feels as thugh yu have a chice, the actin that yu 'decide' t take is entirely directed by autmatic neural activity. Brain imaging studies shw that a persn's actin can be predicted by their brain activity up t 10 secnds befre they themselves becme aware they are ging t act. Multiple neurscientific studies shw that even thse imprtant decisins that feel wrked ut are just as autmatic as knee-jerk reactins(膝跳反应)(althugh mre cmplex).
Decisin-making starts with the amygdala: a set f tw almnd-shaped nuclei(杏仁状核) buried deep within the brain, which generate emtin. The amygdala registers the infrmatin streaming in thrugh ur senses and respnds t it in less than a secnd, sending signals thrughut the brain. These prduce an urge t run, fight, freeze r grab, accrding t hw the amygdala values varius stimuli.
Befre we act n the amygdala's signals, hwever, the infrmatin is usually prcessed by ther brain areas, including sme that prduce cnscius thughts and emtins. Areas cncerned with recgnitin wrk ut what's ging n, thse cncerned with memry cmpare it with previus experiences, and thse cncerned with reasning, judging and planning get t wrk n cnstructing varius actin plans. The best plan—if we are lucky—is then selected and carried ut. If any f this prcess ges wrng, we are likely t hesitate, r d smething silly.
The varius stages f decisin-making are marked by different types f brain activity. Fast (gamma) waves, with frequencies f 25 t 100 Hz, prduce a keen awareness f the multiple factrs that need t be taken int accunt t arrive at a decisin. If yu are trying t chse a sandwich, fr instance, gamma waves generated in varius cells within the 'taste' area f the brain bring t mind and cmpare the taste f ham, hummus, wh lemeal, surdugh, and s n. Althugh it may seem useful t be aware f the full range f chice, t much infrmatin makes decisin-making mre difficult, s irrelevant factrs get dismissed quickly and uncnsciusly.
After this cmparisn stage, the brain switches t slw-wave activity(12 t 30 Hz). This extinguishes mst f the gamma activity, leaving just a single 'htspt' f gamma waves which marks the chsen ptin.
Althugh there is n 'yu' utside yur brain t direct what it's ding, yu can help it t make gd decisins by placing yurself in a situatin which is likely t make the prcess run mre smthly. Ding smething that is physically r mentally stimulating befre making a decisin will help yur brain prduce the initial gamma waves that generate awareness f the cmpeting ptins. Getting ver-excited, n the ther hand, will prevent the switch t the slw brainwaves, making it much harder t single ut a chice.
      32. Why des the writer mentin "knee-jerk reactins" in the first paragraph?
      A. T intrduce the finding f the latest brain imaging studies.
      B. T illustrate that decisins are nt cnsciusly thught ut.
      C. T call attentin t a kind f neural reactin that is nt very cmplex.
      D. T shw the difference between decisin-making and ther brain activity.
      33. What des the amygdala d accrding t the passage?
      A. It wrks ut cnscius thughts and emtins.
      B. It selects the best actin plan fr a given situatin.
      C. It dismisses factrs that are irrelevant t the decisin t be made.
      D. It prcesses sensry infrmatin and generates emtinal respnses.
      34. What can be cncluded frm paragraphs 4 and 5?
      A. Slw-wave activity usually lasts lnger than fast-wave activity.
      B. The brain priritizes infrmatin befre settling n a final chice.
      C. Decisin-making is difficult when slw-wave activity ccurs first.
      D. The brain needs as much infrmatin as pssible t make a decisin.
      35. Hw des engaging in stimulating activities help the decisin-making prcess?
      A. By preparing the brain t single ut the mst reasnable chice.
      B. By helping the brain switch t slw-wave activity mre quickly.
      C. By getting the brain t fcus n thse mst relevant alternatives.
      D. By making the brain mre aware f the factrs and chices invlved.

The Hardest Nvel I've Ever Read
Fr the last three mnths, I have glared at its fat heavy frm n my flr with a vague sense f persnal failure. I have pened Ulysses twice, determined t finish it, and managed t get all the way t page 46. 36
37 I like the cmmunity this bk has created, its inherent sense f freedm and celebratin f all things rude and true. I like that the style and language allw fr readers t chse hw they read it—sme recmmend skipping chapter three, thers suggest reading it nly after reading ABOUT it but I still get stuck.
Why d I get stuck? 38 On the "Mst Difficult Nvels" list n the Gdreads website, Jyce takes the tp tw spts, with Ulysses ranking first and Finnegans Wake fllwing it. I think what is restricting me t page 46 is the language: the big fat burst f Chaucerian English with slang and jaunty dialgue that, while entertaining me, is als leaving me a little lst.
There are a few ther "wrthy" wrks f literature I have yet t read, including Infinite Jest and War and Peace. 39 I really want t lve Ulysses. I feel deeply frustrated that I can't finish it, all the while appreciating its uniqueness, weightiness and special "Jyceness."
The English writer Virginia Wlf thught Ulysses was nnsense as she cmplained in her diaries abut the pressure t finish reading it. By cntrast, Vladimir Nabkv, the authr wh wrte Llita expressed deep lve fr it. 40 I have read it similar t a lng marriage(smething unpleasant, big reward at the end), mdern Jazz-fusin (an innvative genre) and bxing match with neself (wanting t punch yurself in the face), which is hw I felt by page 46.
Sme peple lve Ulysses, s where am I getting wrng? My ultimate hpe is that the struggle will be wrth the effrt and I can prceed victrius nt page 800 r s, n my third furth, eighteenth try. Smething tells me I will get there in the end.
      A. I'm nt entirely sure myself.
      B. A lt f them are weighty tmes(巨著), but I like big bks.
      C. I have read s little bth times that I have never bthered using a bkmark.
      D. It seems that reading Ulysses is a big different experience fr everyne.
      E. Even when staring at pages withut absrbing a wrd, I thught nice thughts abut it.
      F. They, hwever, nly cause me a slight sense f shame that I have nt read r enjyed them.
      G. I have been amused and charmed by the first tw r three chapters, and then puzzled and bred.

      32. B 推理判断题。第一段最后两句提到“Brain imaging studies shw that a persn's actin can be predicted by their brain activity up t 10 secnds befre they themselves becme aware they are ging t act. Multiple neurscientific studies shw that even thse imprtant decisins that feel wrked ut are just as autmatic as knee-jerk reactins(膝跳反应)(althugh mre cmplex).”(脑成像研究表明,一个人的行为可以在他们意识到自己将要采取行动之前10秒通过他们的大脑活动来预测。
第二段提到“Decisin-making starts with the amygdala: a set f tw almnd-shaped nuclei(杏仁状核)buried deep within the brain, which generate emtin. The amygdala registers the infrmatin streaming in thrugh ur senses and respnds t it in less than a secnd, sending signals thrughut the brain. These prduce an urge t run, fight, freeze r grab, accrding t hw the amygdala values varius stimuli.”(决策始于杏仁核:埋藏在大脑深处的一组两个杏仁状的核,产生情感。
第四段第二句提到“Fast(gamma) waves, with frequencies f 25 t 100 Hz, prduce a keen awareness f the multiple factrs that need t be taken int accunt t arrive at a decisin.”(频率在25到100 赫兹之间的快速(伽马)波,能让人敏锐地意识到需要考虑的多种因素,从而做出决定。)大脑在做决定之前,会考虑各种信息,第五段提到“After this cmparisn stage, the brain switches t slw-wave activity(12 t 30 Hz). Thisextinguishes mst f the gamma activity, leaving just a single‘htspt’f gamma waves which marks the chsen ptin.”(在这个比较阶段之后,大脑切换到慢波活动(12到30赫兹)。
最后一段第二句提到“Ding smething that is physically r mentally stimulating befre making a decisin will help yur brain prduce the initial gamma waves that ge nerate awareness f the cmpeting ptins.”(在做决定之前做一些刺激身体或精神的事情会帮助你的大脑产生最初的伽马波,从而产生对抉择的意识。)前文提到“高速伽马波”会处理作决定之前的相关信息,而做决定之前刺激身体和精神可以产生最初产生的伽马波,即高速伽马波,这样可以加强大脑对相关信息的关注。故选 C。
