I received an email frm a reader wh asked, “Why d sme friendships end, n matter hw much yu want
them t last?”. She referred t 1 (see) the questin in ne f my articles, Mystery f Friendship. As I
wrte in it, I dn’t think easy answers exist as t hw friendships start, why sme turn int lifetime 2 ,
and why sme end. Althugh I 3 (try) answering the first tw questins in ther articles (T Have A
Friend and Be A Friend) , I still get surprised by friendships that endure and disillusined by thse that slip away.
Even s, I’ll try t ffer sme insights here as t why friendships end.
My simple answer is that friendships end because the situatins 4 friends are in r even the
friends themselves change. First, the realities friends face may change. The decisin 5 (relcate) fr a
new schl r jb cannt help but affect a friendship. Likewise, if a friend is in an accident, develps an illness, r
lses smene clse, these cannt help but affect a friendship. Des a friendship need t end because f these
changes? N, but it’ll require adjustments that ne r bth friends 6 nt be willing t make.
Secnd, the friends themselves may-change. A significant reasn why friendships ften end when friends are
apart fr an 7 (extend) perid f time (fr summer camp, cllege, etc.) is that ne r bth f the friends
change. I think it hurts less when bth friends change, because then the breakup is mre ften mutual and s bth
friends get clsure by bth deciding t let g and mve frward in their lives withut each ther. What tends t hurt

The mst ppular films f my yuth were war films. They were abut hw Britain wn a war—and that

I’m a jurnalist and ccasinal histrian, and smething the tw prfessins share is a respect fr the 22

smetimes be 23 f distrtin (歪曲) and thughtless analysis, but t be plain wrng is unethical and
unprfessinal. The gap between fact and fictin is ne that shuld nt be crssed - r if crssed, shuld stand

Many playwrights, filmmakers and nvelists 24 . T them, histry is a stimulus t artistic licence,

ften, plitics. They leave it t histrians t wrry abut 26 . This, t me, is lying.
I have always fund ‘ 27 ‘ (in which facts are the basis fr fictin) hard t stmach. I can appreciate
‘dcudrama’, which dramatises the events, r the nvels f Hilary Mantel, as attempts t deepen ur understanding

tuch f reality t the made-up stry. The result was an audience 31 f what was true r false.
I appreciate that histry—as with 32 —invlves selectin, and that selectin itself can be
mtivated by a desire t twist the truth. Each age puts pressure n histrians t select material in a manner that
respects the 33 r bias (偏向) f natins, grups r individuals. The duty f the histrian is t see
behind such bias. The task is t reveal what happened, why and hw.
In an age f artificial intelligence and nline ‘deep fakery’, the truth has never been mre 34 .
The wrld f fictin has n need t be a parasite (寄生虫) n histry: it has all f human imaginatin t supply it
with plts. Every wrk that claims t be ‘based n real events’ shuld, in my view, be identified as lies, and shuld
display a large ‘T’ r ‘NT’ —true r nt true. Artistic licence shuld nt be a (n) 35 t deceive.

In the cllege-admissins wars, we parents are the true fighters. We’re pushing ur kids t get gd grades,
take SAT preparatry curses and build resumes s they can get int the cllege f ur first chice. I’ve twice been
t the wars, and as I survey the battlefield, smething different is happening. We see ur kids’ cllege backgrund
as a prize demnstrating hw well we’ve raised them. But we can’t acknwledge that ur bsessin is mre abut
us than them. S we’ve cme up with varius justificatins that turn ut t be half-truths, prejudices r myths. It
actually desn’t matter much whether Aarn and Nicle g t Stanfrd.
We have a full-blwn prestige panic; we wrry that there wn’t be enugh prizes t g arund. Fearful
parents urge their children t apply t mre schls than ever. Underlying the hysteria (歇斯底里) is the belief that
scarce elite degrees must be highly valuable. Their graduates must enjy mre success because they get a better
educatin and develp better cntacts. All that is plausible, and mstly wrng. We haven’t fund any cnvincing
evidence that selectivity r prestige matters. Selective schls dn’t systematically emply better instructinal
appraches than less selective schls. On tw measures- prfessrs’ feedback and the number f essay exams
selective schls d slightly wrse.
试卷第 14 页,共 14 页
By sme studies, selective schls d enhance their graduates’ lifetime earnings. The gain is cnsidered at
2-4% fr every 100-pint increase in a schl’s average SAT scres. But even this advantage is prbably a
statistical fluke (偶然). A well-knwn study examined students wh gt int highly selective schls and then went
elsewhere. They earned just as much as graduates frm higher-status schls.
Kids cunt mre than their clleges. Getting int Yale may signify intelligence, talent and ambitin. But it’
s nt the nly indicatr and its significance is declining. The reasn: s many similar peple g elsewhere. Getting
int cllege is nt life’s nly cmpetitin. In the next cmpetitin—the jb market and graduate schl—the results
may change. Old-by netwrks are breaking dwn. Princetn ecnmist Alan Krueger studied admissins t ne
tp Ph.D.prgram. High scres n the GRE helped explain wh gt in; degrees f prestigius universities didn’t.
S, parents, lighten up. The stakes (风险) have been vastly exaggerated. Up t a pint, we can ratinalize (合
理化) ur pushiness. America is a cmpetitive sciety; ur kids need t adjust t that. But t much pushiness can
be destructive. The very ambitin we impse n ur children may get sme int Harvard but may als set them up
fr disappintment. One study fund that, ther things being equal, graduates f highly selective schls
experienced mre jb dissatisfactin. They may have been s cnditined t being n tp that anything less
disappints.
43.Why des the authr say that parents are the true fighters in the cllege-admissins wars?
A.They have the final say in which university their children are t attend.
B.They knw best which universities are mst suitable fr their children.
C.They care mre abut which cllege their children g t than the children themselves.
D.They have t carry ut intensive surveys f clleges befre children make an applicatin.
44.What des the authr mean by “kids cunt mre than their clleges” Line 1, para.4?
A.Cntinuing educatin is mre imprtant t a persn’s success.
B.Kids’ actual abilities are mre imprtant than their cllege backgrund.
C.A persn’s happiness shuld be valued mre than their educatin.
D.What kids learn at cllege cannt keep up with jb market requirements.
45.What des Krueger’s study tell us?
A.Getting int Ph.D.prgrams may be mre cmpetitive than getting int cllege.
B.Graduates frm prestigius universities d nt care much abut their GRE scres.
C.Cnnectins built in prestigius universities may be sustained lng after graduatin.
D.Degrees f prestigius universities d nt guarantee entry t graduate prgrams.

Even scarier is that this, the largest identity-theft bust (搜捕) t date, is just a drp in the bucket. 48 .
It’s ne f crime’s biggest grwth markets. A name, address and Scial Security number — which can ften be

The previusly unlit cycle path in the Netherlands has recently drawn ur attentin. It has been resurfaced

Why shuld we care abut city lighting? What’s wrng with current electrical lighting anyway? Well, the
