Befre I went t The Other Green’s saln held by La Otra — a wmen-themed bkstre in Beijing — last mnth, playing sccer never wuld have appeared n my bucket list. I regularly d yga, cycle and swim, which, in my eyes, are gd exercises fr wmen, while sccer, definitely, is fr men.
Hw can sccer becme a feminist (女权主义的) tpic? What prevents wmen frm participating in the game? Or is it really a game nly fr men? Keeping these questins in mind, I step int the saln and meet five members frm the Beijing-based WM female sccer club. They lk wnderful, with sunny smiles and athletic figures. Mst f us like shrtcuts — the nes that get us t a place faster, whether we have t walk thrugh a few trees r jump ver a wall. But hw far wuld yu g t make a really gd shrtcut? Prbably nt as far as the Americans did when they built the Panama Canal, giving ships a quicker rute between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific. When it pened in 1914, the canal cut the jurney time frm the east cast f the US t the west cast by as much as 15,000 kilmetres.
This was nt an easy shrtcut. Panama had been chsen mainly because it was the narrwest part f Central America. But the land was muntainus and full f trpical rain frests and it was still mre than 80 kilmetres wide. It’s said that almst 6,000 wrkers died frm making the canal between 1904 and 1913, but the real number is prbably much higher.
As well as the difficult, dangerus jb they had, thse wrkers — many frm the Caribbean — had t deal with heat, msquites (蚊子), snakes and lts f rain. The result was a canal that has been called ne f the wnders f the mdern wrld.
Tday, a ship entering the canal has t pass thrugh three sets f lcks. These are used like stairs, and they’re needed because the canal is nt f the same height all the way thrugh. The lcks use lts f fresh water t lift up the bats-n average, 9 billin liters every day frm lakes next t the canal.
And althugh Panama is a wet cuntry, the climate is changing, and there is less water nw than there used t be. The Panama Canal is still a shrtcut fr nw, but it’s in danger.

C. Panama always came acrss terrible weather.
D. Unknwn wildlife increased challenges f making it.
10. What d yu think f the lcks using fresh water?
A. It is a waste f natural resurce.
B. It makes lakes next t the canal in danger.
C. It is a must t keep bats run smthly.
D. It is a gd way t deal with changeable climate.
11. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the text?
A. Everyne Is Willing t Take Shrtcuts
B. The Great Canal Facing Climate Changes
C. The Panama Canal Is an Imprtant Shrtcut

Mre than 2,200 years ag, a battle between the Rmans and the Carthaginians tk place at sea ff nrthwestern Sicily. Rme was victrius, defeating the ther military ships and ending the war. What we dn’t yet knw exactly is the rder in which these rganisms clnize wrecks.”
“Yunger shipwrecks (遇难船只) typically hst a less diverse cmmunity than their envirnment,” said Maria Flavia Gravina, anther researcher. “By cmparisn, ur ram is much mre representative f the natural habitat. It can act as a nvel kind f sampling tl fr scientists, which effectively acts as an ‘eclgical memry’ f clnizatin.”
12. Why is the battle between the Rmans and the Carthaginians mentined?
A. T lead in the tpic.B. T draw a cnclusin.
C. T aruse the sympathy abut the war.D. T clarify the serius damage caused by the war.

C. By restratin, recnstructin and cmparisn.
D. By putting the rganisms clnize wrecks in rder.
14. What des the underlined wrd “It” refer t in the last paragraph?
A. The ship’s ram.B. The marine envirnment.
