During my undergraduate years in Kerala, India, a severe fld changed my life. One mrning, I was urgently awakened by a friend infrming me that heavy rain had caused flding in ur area. I had initially pursued civil engineering, inspired by my dream f designing buildings. Hwever, as my studies prgressed, I became mre interested in research. The fld clarified my directin. After vlunteering in affected cmmunities that summer, I decided t fcus n natural disasters. I applied fr a master’s prgram in develpment studies, a multidisciplinary (多学科的) curse cvering sustainable develpment, gegraphy, and ecnmics, with hands-n cmmunity prjects. This decisin greatly surprised my friends and family, wh questined why I was leaving engineering fr scial sciences. They wrried abut my jb prspects, but I was determined t fllw my passin.
The prgram expsed me t prjects helping cmmunities plan fr climate change, strengthening my belief in this path. I then applied fr a Ph. D., despite financial uncertainty and the challenge f switching fields. Many universities preferred candidates with cnsistent academic backgrunds, and I faced rejectins and skepticism during interviews. Hwever, ne prgram accepted me, allwing me t study hw better water resurce management and plicy can help vulnerable ppulatins adapt t climate change uncertainties.
Starting the Ph. D.was exciting but challenging. Nw, three years int my prgram, I am cnfident in my decisin. If yu think histry is ld hat, try getting a seat at the Ryal Albert Hall n Octber 18th. The big draw is a pair f chatty histrians.
Tm Hlland and Dminic Sandbrk have each written several bks. Fame enugh t fill the Ryal Albert Hall cmes frm smething else, thugh. Since its launch in 2020, their pdcast (播客), “The Rest is Histry”, has becme the mst subscribed t pdcast in Britain. The pair riginally cnsidered their pdcast as an added thing t bk-writing. Nw they have little time fr anything else.
Prfessinals in the industry may assume that making use f the past fr stries is easy, r that listeners just hpe t sund clever withut reading bks. But the speed with which histry pdcasts have grwn suggests ther reasns are in play. Sme peple realize in their 30s that their frmal educatin has left big gaps. Unlike, say, science, histry des nt require specialized knwledge. The shws als create a sense f cmmunity, and use ancient traditins f strytelling, fr all these reasns histry pdcasts are enjying a glden age.
Relatively speaking, that is. Histry will never be tp f the pps, admits Mike Duncan, an American pdcaster. Dwnlads fr sprts and entertainment shws, r jkey current-events shws such as “The Je Rgan Experience”, remain far mre ppular. But histry shws tend t sprt a lnger tail than cmpeting shws. Nt many listeners will want t dig up ld news shws’ quick takes. But Mr. Duncan’s pdcast n Rme, which ended in 2012, still gets thusands f weekly dwnlads.
Many pdcasters find their wn capacity as strytellers keeps imprving. All that is gd fr an audience that increasingly lks fr a sense f cmpaninship in pdcasts because they spend ever mre time in lnely pursuits, such as exercise, than in scial frums (论坛). “Our audience weren’t necessarily interested in histry,” says Mr. Hlland. “But I think lts f them like cmpaninship.” The rest may be histry, but histry, at least, seems t be getting better.
28.What can we say abut “The Rest is Histry”?
A.It is aimed at imprving writing skills.B.It was launched t prmte a bk.
C.It is sharply criticized by schlars.D.It has fully ccupied its creatrs.
29.What des paragraph 3 mainly tell us abut histry pdcasts?

C.Factrs cntributing t their success.D.Special knwledge required t make them.
30.What d the underlined wrds “sprt a lnger tail” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Sustain a lasting effect.B.Dig up mre quick takes.
C.Change previus functins.D.Cver mre cntent.
31.What des Mr. Hlland think histry pdcasts can d?
A.Grw int his life-lng pursuit.B.Bring listeners a sense f cmmunity.
C.Imprve listeners’ strytelling styles.D.Encurage mre listeners t study histry.

When yu’re feeling unhappy, d yu reach fr smething t eat t lift yur md? Yu’re nt alne; emtinal eating is all t cmmn. It’s estimated that 75 percent f vereating is triggered by emtins.
If yu’re lking fr fd fr cmfrt, which fds d yu chse? Instead f celery (芹菜) r cucumber, sweet treats like ice cream r salty snacks like chips always d the trick. A new study suggests that, hwever, the fds we eat t feel better may have the ppsite effect.
Researchers at Harvard and Wmen’s Hspital in Bstn were interested in the effects n md f ultra-prcessed (超加工的) fds such as sweet and spicy snacks as well as prcessed meats, drinks, and ther energy-dense items.
The researchers gave a recgnized fd frequency questinnaire every fur years t 31,000 wmen aged 42 t 62. The wmen wh reprted high ultra-prcessed fd cnsumptin had a greater BMI, higher rates f drinking, and mre diseases like diabetes and high bld pressure. The researchers als nted an increased risk f depressin assciated with ultra-prcessed fd cnsumptin. Over the 14 years f the study, they fund 4,840 cases f depressin.
A causal link between depressin and the cnsumptin f ultra-prcessed fd isn’t knwn, but researchers hazard a speculatin that artificial sweeteners affect the cmmunicatin between cells in the brain and nervus system, which may be invlved with depressin. Hwever, it’s still under debate.
What are the practical implicatins f using ultra-prcessed fds t lift yur md? Yu culd switch t healthier snacks (e. g., nuts, carrts). The sunds f chewing the snack might replace the sweet taste f the ultra-prcessed fd. Or, instead f eating, yu culd find an enjyable activity t imprve yur frame f mind. Fr instance, yu culd listen t upbeat music r watch a cmedy vide. But the best alternative is t get active. Walking, jgging, yga, r strength training is an effective treatment fr depressin. It’s easier t reach fr an ultra-prcessed snack when yu’re feeling dwn, but that might leave yu feeling wrse. Instead, get up and d smething physical; yu’ll feel much better!
32.What type f fd d peple usually eat fr cmfrt?
A.Celery and cucumber. B.Ice cream and chips. C.Nuts and carrts.D.Whle grains.
33.What d the underlined wrds “hazard a speculatin” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Rule ut a pssibility.B.Cnfirm an pinin.C.Make an assumptin.D.Object t an idea.
34.Hw many alternatives t emtinal eating are suggested in the passage?
A.Tw.B.Three.C.Fur.D.Five.
35.What is the passage mainly abut?
A.The link between fd and md.B.The harm f ultra-prcessed fd.
C.The imprtance f physical exercise.D.The advice n imprving yur md.
