In cllege, I usually anticipated icebreaker games at the start f sme classes. We wuld intrduce urselves. It was fun t see the lk f surprise n everyne’s face when I said I was a chemical engineering majr in creative writing seminars where mst were English r cmparative literature majrs. A science majr? In this building? Is he lst?
Their surprise wuld usually fade nce the semester began and they learned that I wasn’t very gd. But it didn’t matter; I lved the writing classes. I didn’t much care—hw and whether my classes wuld impact my career. I liked science and writing, s maybe I’d cmbine them, r maybe nt.
But I knw my experience is nt exactly typical fr scientists. I’m sure sme students lve science s intensely, r excel at it s much, that they have n interest in nn-science classes. And science students may find the wrklad s high that pursuing utside academic interests is impractical.
But I have this fear that sme science students avid branching ut, nt because they dn’t want t, but because they believe they’re nt suppsed t. They see their peers keeping their heads dwn, nly fcused n science, science, science, and they dn’t want t be the freaks (怪人) wh admit lving their ptinal medieval histry seminar. I’ve seen this trait in the students I taught.
In cllege, althugh my department head let me take writing classes, ther prfessrs didn’t share the same pen-mindedness. I smetimes dubted whether it was what I was suppsed t d. The science, we’re tld, either explicitly r implicitly, is the imprtant part. The ther subjects are either requirements t bear r distractins t give up halfway. A gd grade in rganic chemistry? Amazing! Yu’re ging places! A gd grade in a petry seminar? Well...
Yu can be a scientist and d ther things, t—and the time when yu’re enrlled in schl is a perfect pprtunity. In cllege, s many ptins fr classes! Yu suddenly transitin frm a life where it’s presumed that yu have knwn enugh t live t ne with a diversity f chices.
S g ahead, add a class, add a hbby. Be well-runded—yes, that well-runded.

In Prtugal, near the twn f Alqueva, lies Eurpe’s largest artificial lake, hme t an innvative flating slar-pwer plant develped by EDP, a leading renewable energy cmpany. Despite initial skepticism abut the high csts and ptential issues f flating slar technlgy, this prject represents the sectr’s maturatin and readiness fr expansin.
In this first phase f the prject at Alqueva, engineers have statined sme 12,000 PV mdules (光伏组件) n flating platfrms made frm partially recycled plastic and lcally surced sft wd. These are cnnected t an energy-strage system cmbining batteries and are integrated with the hydrelectric dam’s pwer statin.
Flating slar prjects d face plenty f challenges. The kit has t be water-, wave-, wind- and strm-resistant, which adds cmplexity and cst. The fish in lakes attract plenty f birds, whse drppings can blck the sun. T deal with this, engineers fr the prject at Alqueva have develped remte-cntrlled cleaning rbts and are wrking n autnmus nes.
Yet flating slar prjects als enjy several advantages. When lcated at existing hydrelectric dams they d nt require any additinal land and can be cnnected t the grid (电网) withut the multi-year wait cmmn fr slar prjects. The cling effect f being n water bsts the efficiency f the mdules, with studies suggesting gains f between 5% and 15%ver land-based PV, while the shade they prduce slws the water lss f the lake.
EDP views flating slar as a crnerstne f its renewable energy strategy. The initial 5megawatt s (MW, 兆瓦) capacity at Alqueva may seem mdest, but it’s just the beginning. The cmpany is planning a secnd phase, which will see an additinal 70MW capacity by 2025. Accrding t Wd Mackenzie, a leading cnsultancy, flating slar technlgy culd deliver up t 60,000MW f renewable energy glbally by 2031. “This may pale in cmparisn t the 1,600,000MW f slar capacity installed as f last year. But every bit cunts,” he added.
28.Which f the fllwing best describes the EDP prject?
A.It went unquestined.
B.It can be cstly but ec-friendly.
C.It has already expanded.
D.It is separated frm the pwer statin.
29.What can be learned abut flating slar prjects?
A.Engineers have develped aut cleaning rbts.
B.Flating slar prjects demand less time fr grid access.
C.Land-based PV mdules are mre prductive than flating nes.
D.The PV mdules decrease the water level f the lake.
30.What might EDP agree with accrding t the last paragraph?
A.The prject at Alqueva is an instant success.
B.By 2025 the prject at Alqueva will prvide 70MW capacity.
C.The prject will generate the majrity f glbal renewable pwer.
D.The flating slar technlgy has a prmising future.
31.What is a suitable title fr the text?
A.Flating Slar Ready t Shine
B.Slar Pwer r Hydr Pwer
C.The Dawn f Renewable Energy
D.A Glimpse int Glbal Flating Slar Farms

While sme studies have suggested that pht editing is linked t negative utcmes such as seeing neself as an bject and having lw self-esteem, the relatinship between these factrs is nt well understd.
Phillip Ozimek and his clleagues cnducted a study with 403 yung adults recruited thrugh scial media platfrms t investigate the ptential risks assciated with pht editing n scial media. Participants cmpleted an nline survey that included questins abut their scial media use, pht editing behavir, self-perceptin as an bject, cmparisns f physical appearance, self-esteem (自尊), and ther relevant factrs.
T measure pht editing behavir, participants reprted hw ften they edited their selfies befre psting them n scial media. T assess self-perceptin as an bject and cmparisns f physical appearance, participants answered questins abut hw much they mnitred their bdies and cmpared themselves t thers' lks. Finally, participants' self-esteem was measured using a questinnaire that evaluated their verall sense f self-wrth.
The data shwed that higher levels f pht editing were assciated with increased self-perceptin as an bject and mre cmparisns f physical appearance amng yung adults. These factrs, in turn, were related t lwer self-esteem.
The researchers suggested that pht editing behavir may cntribute t feelings f self-perceptin as an bject and basing ne's wrth n appearance, especially amng vulnerable grups like teenagers. They emphasized the need fr further research t explre the impact f pht editing n mental health utcmes and understand why peple engage in this behavir.
Althugh the study had sme limitatins, as acknwledged by Ozimek and his clleagues highlighted the imprtance f cnsidering verall scial media use and specific behavirs like pht editing when studying the relatinship between scial media and mental health utcmes. Interventins (干预) aimed at reducing excessive scial media use r prmting healthier engagement with scial media culd have psitive effects n the mental well-being f yung peple.
32.What were the participants asked t d in the study?
A.Fill in a questinnaire abut self-wrth.
B.Cmpare their lks with thers.
C.Edit their selfies befre psting.
D.See themselves as an bject.
33.What des the wrd “vulnerable” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Hardly prtected.B.Particularly strng.
C.Easily influenced.D.Mstly independent.
34.Frm the passage, what can we infer?
A.The higher levels f pht editing, the higher self-esteem.
B.Reducing the veruse f scial media might be beneficial t well-being.
C.Pht editing is the nly behavir that affects mental health n scial media.
D.The study has cmpletely wrked ut the prblem f the veruse f scial media.
35.What is the purpse f this passage?
A.T intrduce the ppularity f scial media.
B.T explain the detailed prcess f a study n pht editing.

It desn’t have t be very detailed and can be as simple as a set f principles, like exercising in the mrning r nt eating t much after 6:00 p.m.
39 The easiest way t stay fit while traveling is t mve and make active lifestyle a habit. Walk a cuple f stps instead f taking the public transprt. Use the stairs instead f an elevatr. If there’s a nice viewpint, lk fr a way t hike t it rather than drive t it. Sure, it will be tugh at first, but ur bdies are gd at adapting t anything. 40

Weeks befre, I’d displeased a friend and hurt my teenage sn, all within six hurs. I felt like a hurricane that tre thrugh ther peple’s lives. Last week, the frzen ckie dugh saved me frm myself nce again. It all started when my new neighbr, a cllege student acrss the street, placed a Ping-Png table n his frnt lawn.
I had spent years living in a cllege twn, s I knew that a Ping-Png table n a frnt lawn was nt just a Ping-Png table. It was a beer-png table. The students embraced beer png as a lifestyle, with the sunds f beer png extending late int the night and early int the mrning.
The best we culd d was mve t a quieter part f twn, which we did at great expense. And nw, here was this guy, placing a new beer-png table within full view f my new kitchen windw.

“Wh the hell are yu?” he asked. “And what gives yu the right t make such a silly demand?” His rudeness nly made me angrier.
