When I bught a huse in Prtland fur years ag, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending t remve the weeds and plant sme vegetables r lng-lasting flwers. I sn discvered, hwever, that the sil was unprductive, clay-heavy and littered with stnes. In previus, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags f high-quality sil frm the nursery. Replacing this vastly greater quantity f dirt was neither practical nr financially pssible. Instead, I decided t remediate (补救) what I already had.
The challenge befre me was t revitalize the sil. Tw cre principles f mdern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing sil disturbance and emphasizing bidiversity. In practice, grwing crps by turns, priritizing rganic inputs ver chemical fertilizers, integrating crps, trees and livestck, and shielding sil frm being washed away with cver crps, ften wrk.
I tried t apply such methds in my garden. Where nce there was nly grass, I created a pnd, a rck garden, a wildflwer field and raised beds fr vegetables. I let plants grw and decmpse by themselves in a natural way. I als intrduced different plants and revived its eclgical cmmunities.
In May, I decided t relcate a flwering plant. As I dug the plant ut, all manner f life emerged. Earthwrms swung frm the rts. A daddy lnglegs hurried fr shelter. Belw the plant I even nticed the fine white lattice f a fungal mycelium.
Running my fingers thrugh the sil, I understd, mre clearly than ever befre, that I transfrmed much mre than my yard — it cmpletely changed the way I think abut sil. It’s nt simply as a medium fr life, but as a living entity (个体) in its wn right. Althugh science still lacks an agreed definitin f life, textbks highlight criteria widely cnsidered t differentiate the living and nnliving. Sil meets many f them: It has a highly rganized structure. It has a capacity fr active self-preservatin. It grws. It breathes. And it can die.
4. Hw did the authr use t imprve the sil?
A. By adding rich sil.B. By cvering it with bags.
C. By remving the weeds.D. By applying chemical fertilizer.

C. T stress the cmpetitin f different species.D. T state the frmatin f multi-species cmmunities.

Many ancient ppulatins used inscriptins (铭文) t dcument different parts f their lives. But the bjects cntaining such inscriptins have been damaged ver the centuries.
The researchers, led by Alphabet’s AI cmpany DeepMind, develped a new AI-based methd which serves as a technlgical tl t help researchers repair missing inscriptins and estimate the true rigins f the recrds. They call their tl Ithaca. The system is the first deep neural (神经的) netwrk that can restre the missing text f damaged inscriptins. The researchers said it trained Ithaca n the largest cllectin f data cntaining Greek inscriptins frm the nn-prfit Packard Humanities Institute in Califrnia. Feeding this data int the system is designed t help the tl use past writings t predict missing letters and wrds in damaged inscriptins.
The researchers reprted that in experiments with damaged writings, Ithaca was able t crrectly predict missing inscriptin elements 62% f the time. In additin, the tl was 71% crrect in identifying where the inscriptins first came frm. And when histrians wrk n their wn, the success rate fr restring damaged inscriptins is abut 25%. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca t assist in their wrk, the success rate jumped t 72%.
Thea Smmerschield frm Ca’Fscari University f Venice said the system had already prvided new infrmatin t help researchers reexamine imprtant perids in Greek histry. In ne case, Ithaca cnfirmed new evidence presented by histrians abut the dating f a series f imprtant Greek decrees (法令). The decrees were first thught t have been written befre 446/445 BCE. But the new evidence suggested a date in the 420s BCE. Ithaca predicted a date f 421 BCE. The date change may seem small but it has significant implicatins fr ur understanding f the plitical histry f Classical Athens.
The team is currently wrking n ther versins f Ithaca trained n ther ancient languages. DeepMind has launched a free, interactive tl based n the system fr use by researchers, educatrs, museum wrkers and the public.

C. T explain the histry f Greek decrees.D. T prve the imprtance f dates t histrians.
11. What is the passage mainly abut?

One f the mst dangerus insects yu need t watch ut fr during summer is msquites. But n matter hw yu try t avid them, sme peple naturally attract msquites mre than thers.
One f the mst imprtant facts t remember is that msquites track peple dwn by smell and bdy dur(气味), accrding t Bart Knls, PhD, a bilgist devted t the study f msquites. The carbn dixide peple breathe ut, alng with chemicals frm the skin, creates an “dur plume” that msquites can detect frm up t almst 100 feet away. “Each persn gives ff mre than 300 chemicals frm the skin, mre than 100 in breathing ut,” Knls says.
The specific mixtures n the skin that msquites respnd t vary by species. The yellw fever msquit and Asian tiger msquit, fr example, respnd well t lactic acid frm skin. African malaria msquites respnd t a mix f fatty acids, accrding t Knls. Yur individual mixtures and smells determine hw much f a msquit attractin yu are, depending n the msquit species. The mix f chemicals yu prduce are nly partly in yur cntrl. These chemicals depend n yur genetic make-up, health cnditin, diet, skin pH, and s n. “Bacteria(细菌)n the skin break dwn the mixtures that we give ff thrugh ur pres(毛孔), and these are the attractive smells,” Knls says. “S it is nt actually we that attract msquites, but the bacteria n ur skin.”
Althugh this is a cmplex and partly understd phenmenn, Knls says that we d all have a unique smell. There are many flk stries abut why sme peple are mre r less attractive t msquites. Sme peple falsely think the bld type is the cause, and thers believe taking vitamin B r eating garlic makes peple less attractive t msquites—but Knls ntes there’s n scientific data backing these claims.
12. What d we learn frm the secnd paragraph?
A. Msquites can detect peple with smell.B. Nbdy can avid msquites anyway.
C A persn breathes ut ver 300 chemicals.D. Peple naturally attract msquites.
13. Why des the authr take several kinds f msquites fr example?
A. T persuade readers t prtect the envirnment.
B. T warn peple against tuching msquites.
C. T shw different msquites react t mixtures.
D. T make peple lk ut fr pisnus msquites.
14 What draws msquites accrding t Bart Knls?
A. Chemicals in the muth.B. Mixtures peple give ff.
C. Smells frm the pres.D. Bacteria n the skin.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A. The Scientific Reasn Yu Are a Msquit Attractin
B. Flk Stries abut Hw Msquites Attack Peple
C. Attitudes tward Msquites Different Peple Have
D. Ways t Make Peple Mre and Mre Attractive
