Mved by her determinatin, I vlunteered t help her after schl. Each day, Hani wke at dawn, studying n the bus t her public high schl, then jining me in the afternn, exhausted but eager t learn. Despite her struggles with cllege-level English, her perseverance amazed me.
Hani’s family lived mdestly, her parents wrking as a custdian and a maid. Their incme culdn’t supprt her American university aspiratins, dampening my initial ptimism.
In December 1998, a schlarship pprtunity arse, but upn reviewing the requirements, I despaired. Hani lacked the extracurricular experience and standardized test scres typical f applicants. Despite my discuragement, she remained reslute, asking me t submit her applicatin. Unable t refuse, I cmpleted the applicatin, highlighting her curage and perseverance. I warned her f slim acceptance dds, but she remained steadfast.
In the fllwing weeks, Hani intensified her English studies, and I arranged fr her t take the Test f English Fluency. The cmputerized test psed a significant challenge fr her. Just befre departing fr the test, she received a letter frm the schlarship assciatin. I began reading the letter with her, nly t discver she’d been accepted.

Biengineers have intrduced a new methd f fd prductin that culd dramatically reshape agriculture, ptentially making it mre ec-friendly, and adaptable t envirnments like space.
Called “electr-agriculture”, this system wuld replace traditinal phtsynthesis (光合作用) — a prcess that nly changes arund 1% f light energy int usable chemical energy in plants— with a slar-pwered reactin that effectively changes carbn dixide (CO₂) int an rganic mlecule (有机分子) that plants culd use as fd. The current versin f electr-agriculture achieves abut 4% efficiency — fur times higher than phtsynthesis.
“Since electr-agriculture is nt dependent n climate cnditins like traditinal farming, it culd serve as a precius methd fr prducing additinal fd when necessary. With glbal climate change affecting agriculture, new fd prductin technlgies are becming increasingly vital t balancing fd markets and supprting a grwing ppulatin”, senir authr Feng Jia said.
In electr-agriculture, slar plates wuld be used t pwer a chemical reactin between CO₂ and water, prducing acetate (醋酸盐). Plants wuld be reengineered t use this acetate as a primary energy surce instead f relying n phtsynthesis. Plants naturally have a metablic (新陈代谢的) pathway that allws them t break dwn fd stred in their seeds, but this pathway is deactivated nce the plant starts using phtsynthesis. The biengineering team aims t reactivate this prcess in mature plants s they can “eat” acetate as an energy surce.
Rbert Jinkersn, a bilgical engineer, sees this technlgy as a majr mve frward. “If we dn’t need t grw plants with sunlight anymre, then we can decuple agriculture frm the envirnment and grw fd in indr, cntrlled envirnments,” he said. The change culd mve agriculture int upright, multi-stry indr farms where slar pwer is cllected utside the building t drive plant grwth inside.
S far, researchers have engineered plants that can use acetate in cmbinatin with phtsynthesis, but the ultimate gal is t create plants that rely entirely n acetate fr energy. While plant research is still in its early stages, ther species like mushrms have already naturally used acetate as an energy surce. This means the technlgy culd be applied t these fd-prducing beings much sner in the market.
8. What is the key t electr-agriculture?
A. Prmting energy change efficiency.B. Increasing plants’ adaptatin t light.
C. Offering plants sufficient nutritin.D. Reprducing phtsynthesis indrs.
9. What did Feng Jia take electr-agriculture as?
A. A shrt-term fix fr climate change.B. A valuable slutin fr fd supply.
C. A new explratin f traditinal farming.D. A pssible replacement fr rganic farming.
10. Hw des electr-agriculture supprt plants?
A. By breaking dwn mre acetate.B. By shining them in man-made light.
C. By restarting their metablic pathways.D. By preventing CO₂frm reacting with water.
11. What des the underlined wrd “decuple” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Prtect.B. Separate.C. Recver.D. Chse.
D
Artificial intelligence can help accurately map and track penguin clnies (聚居地) in Antarctica by analysing turist phts. “Right nw, everyne has a camera in their pcket, and s the amunt f data being cllected arund the wrld is incredible,” says Heather Lynch at Stny Brk University in New Yrk.
Hayu Wu at Stny Brk University and his clleagues, including Lynch, used an AI tl t highlight Adélie penguins in phtgraphs taken by turists r scientists n the grund. With guidance frm a human expert, the AI tl was able t autmatically identify and utline entire clnies in phts. This semi-autmated methd is much faster than ding everything manually (手动地) because the AI tl takes just 5 t 10 secnds per image, cmpared with a persn taking 1 t 2 minutes. The team als created a 3D digital mdel f the Antarctic landscape using satellite imagery and data. By identifying landscape details in the turist pictures, the researchers culd place the phtgrapher, then the penguin clny, accurately within the 3D mdel.
This transfrmatin f grund phts int a bird’s-eye view allws researchers t track hw penguin clnies change in lcatin and ppulatin size ver time, which culd prve especially helpful in remte regins f the wrld. Such tracking is imprtant because Adélie penguins are cnsidered a sentinel species, meaning shifts in their ppulatin are an indicatr f climate change. The AI-assisted technique can als emply histrical imagery t track phenmena such as glacier changes that “ccur very slwly and may nly be evident by lking acrss decades f time”, says Lynch.
But researchers remain divided ver the impacts f Antarctic turism — the tw large Adélie penguin grups evaluated by the researchers are ften visited by tur ships. “Sme are wrried that, by encuraging turists t d citizen science, we are justifying their trips, which will be used by the cruise (游轮) cmpanies t sell mre tickets,” says Fretwell.
12. Where did the research data cme frm?
A. Expert data base.B. Maps marked by AI.
C. 3D digital mdel.D. Images sht by turists.
13 What rle did AI play in highlighting Adélie penguins?
A. It served as an assistant.B. It acted as a predictr.
C. It replaced the human experts.D. It cnducted the entire research.
14. Why did the researchers track the changes f Adélie penguin clnies?
A. T gather data n turism.B. T mnitr penguin behavirs.
C. T examine the effects f AI.D. T further study the climate change.
15. Which f the fllwing best describes researchers’ attitudes twards Antarctic turism?
A. Unclear.B. Cntrversial.C. Indifferent.D. Supprtive.

11 What des the underlined wrd “decuple” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Prtect.B. Separate.C. Recver.D. Chse.
