In 1999, Rebecca Cnstantin began ding a study at schls acrss Ls Angeles. She had just cmpleted a
PhD in Language, Literacy and Learning, and she was analyzing children’s access t bks in wealthy and
      lw-incme cmmunities.
One day, she saw smething that stpped her in her tracks. “I was at a schl in a wealthy cmmunity, and
they were getting rid f almst brand new bks because they didn’t have rm in the library,” said Cnstantin.

“Schl libraries are nt funded well, and smetimes nt funded at all,” said Cnstantin. “If yu’re a child in an

In additin t bk dnatins and refurbishing (再装修) libraries, the grup ffers authr visits with schls
and hlds an annual writers cnference fr kids. Cnstantin said, “If we prvide high-interest bks and a
beautiful library space, they d cme and they d read. We fund that in the schls that we serve, the number f
bks brrwed increases significantly after ur cming. S we knw that kids are really interested in the bks
that we give. My gal is that kids can always have a friend in a bk and they can always turn t a bk t find
      cmfrt and t learn smething.”

Scientists have recently develped a methd t 3D-print greener buildings using lcal sil that they say has the
ptential t revlutinise the cnstructin industry.

Cncrete remains the primary material used in many cnstructin prjects but it cannt be recycled and

has cme at a cnsiderable envirnmental cst,” said Banerjee.
“The mve t 3D-print cncrete threatens t exacerbate this prblem. Hwever, we envisin a new example
f cnstructin that uses naturally surced materials. Using such materials will further pave the way fr building
designs that are specifically adapted t the needs f the lcal climate.
What's mre, the use f lcal materials wuld reduce the need t transprt cncrete lng distances, further
reducing the envirnmental impact f the buildings.
The research team's plan t replace cncrete with the earth beneath ur feet depends n their ability t imprve
the sil's capability t stand the weight f the whle huse, t which Banerjee said they “are making excellent
      prgress”.
Once they have a clearer idea f the limits f the technlgy, Banerjee and his team plan t further investigate
