Understanding Graphics(图表)
When we are reading, we ften see ne r tw graphics in a text. Have yu ever thught abut these questins: Why are they there? What infrmatin d they give? D they help with ur reading and understanding?
Graphics are things like pictures, maps, charts and tables. They give infrmatin t readers. Very ften, we can see different kinds f graphics in bks, magazines and newspapers. Writers use graphics t attract (吸引) the readers and give them sme special infrmatin. Graphics help t understand the given infrmatin in a text. And graphics put the infrmatin in an rder s that it’s easy t understand when we take a quick lk.
It is nt always true that a picture means mre than a thusand wrds. But many things are easier t shw than t tell and they may als be easier t understand. Graphics are just the right things that give a lt f infrmatin but it desn’t take much time t read and understand.
The right way t read and understand a graphic is t lk at the picture and the wrds tgether. In a graphic, nly a few wrds are used t explain what the picture shws yu. Smetimes, numbers and percentages (百分比) are als given t g well with the wrds t explain things.
Nw lk at the graphic n the right. It is hw a writer used a graphic t shw the number f hurs spent sleeping by British teenagers each day. Can yu understand it?
Chinese peple started t use hand fans ver 2,000 years ag. Then, they were almst the nly way t drive the heat away. The Chinese character fr the wrd “fan” has the same sund as the character fr “ kindness”. Thus, fans are viewed as gd luck, charms and expressins f genersity.
The fans came in different shapes and were made frm all kinds f materials. Palm (棕桐) leaf fans were cheap and easy t make. Feather fans shwed the wner’s high psitin. Sandalwd (檀香) fans culd send ut a sweet smell.

Flding fans were first prduced in the Sng Dynasty (960—1279) and became ppular in the Ming Dynasty(1368— 1644). They have a histry f symblizing schlarship. Men, especially the literati (文人), used zheshan because they were usually made f paper and they culd paint and write pems n them. Charity is big business: in 2020 abut 410 billin yuan was raised fr charity in China. But every year there is mre suffering in the news. Smetimes it feels like peple ask us fr mney everywhere we g. With s many charities, hw can they get enugh mney?
Charity is nt a mdern idea. Over the years peple have fund new and interesting ways t get the mney they need. In 3500 BC King Hammurabai f Babyln encuraged(鼓励)his peple t share their wealth with their prest neighburs. Fr thusands f years, the wrld’s main religins(宗教)have encuraged peple t d the same. In the1970s mre and mre peple had televisins, s charities made films f suffering(受苦)children and brught the wrld prblems straight int peple’s hmes. The 1980s was a time f big business, s charities became mre business-like: they made mney by making and selling everything frm Christmas cards t summer hlidays!
In the 1990s, famus peple like Claudia Schiffer and Michael Jrdan made millins f dllars fr big internatinal cmpanies like Citren and Nike. S charities started using famus peple t. Tday, charities are using the “persnal tuch” t earn mney. Peple give mre when they can see their mney wrking in the area they live in, and when they have a persnal relatinship(关系)with the charity.
Sme peple never give t charities. They say that their mney cannt mend these wrld-wide prblems. This is true, but mst peple knw that a little help is better than nne. Lk mre clsely at charity wrk and yu will see that each persn can d smething t make ur wrld better.

Self-help bks are usually written by sme famus writers, psychlgists (心理学家) r successful businessmen. They teach yu what t d when yu have prblems in yur life—fr example, hw t get alng with yur classmates r cwrkers, hw t manage yur time well r hw t find happiness.
Paul Sweetman, the wner f City Bks in the UK, said the scial envirnment might be ne reasn why mre peple are reading self-help bks. Recently, the scial envirnment has becme mre and mre stressful (有压力的) . “Sme peple cme int the bkstre because they’re really tired f things. They’re lking fr smething relaxing t calm themselves, “Paul said. Besides, yunger readers—such as peple brn after 2000—seem t understand their wn prblems better, accrding t British psychlgist Carline Beatn. This means they’re mre willing t imprve themselves by reading self-help bks.
Self-help bks were smething peple laughed at in the past. Many peple didn’t take chicken sup stries r “success thery” bks seriusly. But nw they’re becming increasingly attractive (有吸引力的) t peple.
Frm my pint f view, whatever the reasn fr the grwing interest in self-help bks is, it’s gd t knw that help is at hand if we need it. But d these bks truly help us? Read ne and find ut.

All children shuld grw up happily and healthily. Hwever, sme children are facing r will face abuse(虐待)in their lives. They’ll be hurt r tuched n private(私人的) parts f their bdy. We call these unsafe tuches and they are abuse. Unsafe tuches are scary and cnfusing(迷惑的)because they can seem playful r gentle. Even if it can be very hard t talk abut it fr children wh experience unsafe tuches frm a friend r family member, we have t talk abut it.

Safe Tuch, Unsafe Tuch
We knw safe tuches are hugs frm ur family r high-fives with ur friends. But unsafe tuches are tuches n private parts f yur bdy. Hwever, it is kay fr a dctr t tuch yu n yur private parts when giving yu a check-up when yur mm r dad is in the rm.
Tell a Grwn-up
If smene gives yu an unsafe tuch, they might want yu t keep it a secret. They might make yu prmise r give yu presents t keep yu frm telling. But yu always have t tell. Yu can tell yur parents r anther grwn-up what has happened. It’s never yur fault if smene tuches yu like this. Keep telling until smene helps yu and makes sure the unsafe tuches never happen again.
Stranger Safety
A stranger is a persn yu dn’t knw. Mst strangers are usually nice and friendly. We dn’t have t be afraid f them but we shuld always make smart chices arund the peple we dn’t knw. Being smart means dn’t be alne with strangers r g anywhere with them even if they seem nice.
Desn’t Matter Wh It Is
Besides strangers, we shuld prtect urselves frm any ptential abuse. Even if smene may be yur friend, yur private parts shuld never be tuched. But, als keep in mind that mst peple are gd and we shuldn’t be afraid f peple arund us with an uneasy psychlgy.
Hitting Is Wrng
If smene hits yu, r yu see smene is being hurt, remember t tell anther grwn-up. Telling teachers and asking fr their help is als a gd chice.
Shut, Run, Tell
If anyne makes yu feel unsafe, shut “stp!” r “dn’t tuch me!” ludly and clearly. It desn’t matter wh it is r where yu are. Shut at them t stp, run away and tell the adults yu trust. Dn’t be scared. Shut as lud as yu can. The mre peple that hear yu, the better.
We hpe children abuse never happens, but if smene hurts yu, remember these six rules and use them t prtect yurself.

Li Jun is a lasheng (ld male rle) perfrmer f Shanghai Jingju Theater Cmpany. During the utbreak, the 59-year-ld man started livestreaming. He tried t think f new ways t attract peple. Different frm perfrming n a nrmal stage, Li gives his perfrmance(表演)in everyday places, like his backyard and study rm. Alng with singing, Li als teaches viewers Peking Opera in a humrus way.
“Livestreaming has brught this classical art clwn(小丑)t earth,” ne viewer said. “It allws yung peple t knw mre and fall in lve with Peking Opera.” Up t nw, Li has gt mre than 6, 000 fans n Duyin, while ne f his vides has received 42, 000 views n Bilibili.
Other kinds f artists als believe that livestreaming is a new chance. On March 26, the third China Huafu Day, Bilibili livestreamed a fashin shw. Perfrmers(表演者)shwed beautiful clthes in traditinal Chinese styles, including thse frm the Wei, Tang and Ming dynasties. During the shw, viewers nt nly enjyed seeing the beautiful clthes but als watched the way perfrmers used ancient styles f make up(化妆). Fr example, a perfrmer taught peple step by step hw t draw the guiyemei, which was a typical make-up style during the Tang dynasty.

In March 2019, while Zhang Meng, an editr, was lking at Weib, she fund a cmic strip that persnified Chinese characters(汉字)by chance and was immediately attracted by its creativity. The stry, created by Milehemilu called Wrd Man, tk place in a wrld where citizens(市民)were all Chinese characters. They had t live accrding t the riginal meanings f the characters and radicals(the characters’parts)were nt allwed t live alne. Chu, which means ugliness in Chinese, met a fugitive(逃亡的)Tishupang(“扌”that was running frm the Radical Hunters. The tw frmed a new character Niu(“扭”). Then they started an adventure(冒险)in the wrld f Chinese characters.
Milehemilu, brn in 1997, represents(代表)a new generatin f writers wh are inspired by Chinese traditinal culture. Befre develping a stry and the “persnality” fr a Chinese character, Milehemilu wuld first learn abut the rigin and develpment f its meanings.
Pan Liang, an editr, nticed that in the last three t fur years, an increasing number f prducts related(相关的)t traditinal Chinese culture have becme ppular amng yung peple. “Chinese traditinal culture has becme a fashin these years pssibly because peple feel cnfident abut ur cuntry and culture,” he says.
Fr example, Yu Qiuyu’s Lectures n Chinese Culture published in 2019 has sld mre than 300,000 cpies. It is a systematic explanatin f Chinese traditinal culture by the essayist and schlar. The Travel Guide t the Tang Dynasty is als ne f the bestselling bks. In an interesting and creative way, it talks abut the histrical backgrund and scial and cultural knwledge mre than 1,000 years ag.
Pan says althugh there are a lt f bks abut traditinal Chinese culture in the market, nly if yung peple can find it interesting t read them can these bks sell well.
The classics will finally stay after the sifting time, but “what we need t d is t change thse cld texts int smething alive, just like craftspeple”, Pan says, “which is quite challenging”.

Gvernments arund the wrld are pushing fr an end t plastic straws (吸管) and bags. Mre and mre businesses are turning t paper prducts as a chice. As a kind f material, paper is widely cnsidered t be greener than plastic. Hwever, it may cme as a surprise when we find ut the truth.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made frm trees. Trees, as we all knw, can reduce carbn dixide (减少二氧化碳) levels in the air. They can slw dwn climate (气候) change. The use f mre paper bags can lead t mre acts f cutting dwn trees.
Secndly, prducts made f paper require mre energy and water. Abut 10% mre energy and fur times mre water are used t prduce a paper bag than t make a plastic ne. Yu might say that we can use recycled paper t save that energy and water. This seems t be a gd idea. Hwever, it takes even mre energy and water t g thrugh the recycling prcess than t make a brand-new paper bag.
Thirdly, paper prducts are heavier than plastic nes. That means they require mre il t transprt. Seven trucks are needed t transprt tw millin paper bags, while t transprt the same number f plastic bags, ne truck is enugh. Once the bags are thrwn away, the increased weight als leads t a large amunt f waste.
S, paper prducts are actually a lse-lse fr bth the envirnment and businesses. They are harmful t ur planet, as well as the plastic nes. Is there anything we can d t prtect ur planet?
The mst envirnment-friendly slutin is t avid single-use prducts. Prducts like glass bttles and steel straws can be reused easily. They are much mre ec-friendly(对生态环境友好的) than either paper prducts r plastic nes. By increasing the usage f these prducts, we can greatly reduce the thrw-away waste in ur daily life and save mre resurces. If s, we can truly make ur planet greener!
