My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet,I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E.class,the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn't do either well.He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!
The night before my marathon,I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line.I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line,my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3,I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!”
By mile 17,I became out of breath and the onceinjured ankle hurt badly.Despite the pain,I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21,I was starving!
As I approached mile 23,I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m.or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact,I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签),I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

Xiao Yu is already quite a traveler, having been to Russia a couple of times. She is just 4 years old. However,Yu is no normal tourist, her visits to the Black Sea coastal resort of Sochi being about much more than rest and recreation, for Yu is autistic (自闭的).And in Sochi she has had encounters(遇见) with a very special kind of specialist(专科医生).That specialist—more exactly two of them—is a dolphin, and contact with it is said to be beneficial to children like Yu.
Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social communication. In some severe cases autistic children may have trouble learning to speak or make eye contact. However, many children with autism are able to live normal lives. With the help of professional doctors, the children played games with the dolphins and receive treatment.
Dolphinassisted treatment is not without controversy, there being no scientific evidence of its benefits, even if it is argued that the communicative experience for the children can be of no harm, and animal welfare activists object to the way animals are forced into their role as therapists (治疗师).However, even if Yu's mother is aware of such objections, she talks enthusiastically of the progress she thinks Yu has made since her first traveling to Sochi.
That program,in which Chinese children with autism visit Sochi to receive dolphinassisted treatment,is supported by the government of Sochi and the China Foundation for Disabled Persons. It was first held last October and again in midJune to July.More than 10 children from China have now visited Sochi to receive dolphinassisted treatment and have had very positive results, says Anatoly Pakhomov, the mayor of Sochi.
“We hope the Sochi government and China Foundation for Disabled Persons can establish a more stable longterm partnership, and we will continue to provide the necessary assistance and support,” Pakhomov said.

A robot designed to carry things moves quickly across a field to gather equipment at a sports event.Such equipment, like javelins and discuses (铁饼),has been thrown by competitors.Another robot moves a humansized screen on wheels. It is designed to permit virtual attendance at the event. And then there are the robots designed to look like the smiling, friendly creatures or mascots that act as the Olympic Games' representatives.
All these robots are part of preparations for the Olympic Games in Tokyo,Japan.Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corporation presented the machines to reporters earlier this week.Toyota is a major supporter of the Olympic Games.
The mascot robots have moving arms and legs, and their eyes change to the images of stars and hearts. They cannot speak at all or walk very well. But Tomohisa Moridaira, the lead engineer, suggested several possibilities, such as getting the robot to hold the Olympic torch using magnets.
The field support robot is a small busshaped machine based on a Toyota ridesharing vehicle that is still in development. The field support robot can travel as fast as 20 kilometers per hour.It holds three cameras and one special sensor that lets it “see” its surroundings.Around the top of its body are special lights that brighten when the vehicle is active. Its artificial intelligence helps it avoid barriers. It is also able to vary its path in order to protect areas of grass.
However,it cannot find the objects, which can weigh up to eight kilograms,or pick them up on its own.A person has to travel with the device, pick up the objects and put them in it.Then, with a press of a button, the vehicle transports the equipment to where it needs to go.
Takeshi Kuwabara took charge of the robots' development. He said it was designed to team robots and humans.“Our aim was to leverage the strengths of both humans and robots,” he said.
The carmaker plans to use the games to present its new vehicle technologies. These include buses fueled by a special kind of battery, and selfdriving taxis.Toyota is competing with other carmakers and technology companies to develop low cost, robotcontrolled cars and electric vehicles.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How do you deal with hunger of your stomach? Eat your favorite meal and keep quiet after that? 16 But it never lets you know, because you keep it busy thinking about your friends or favorite stars. So it silently serves your needs and never lets itself grow. When mind loses its freedom to grow, creativity sets a full stop. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think “What happens next?”,“Why can't I think?”
17 Why reading but not watching TV? It is because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from our childhood.Since it develops other aspects of our life,we have to get help from reading.
Once you read a book, you run your eyes through the lines and your mind tries to explain something to you. 18 Now this seed is unknowingly used by you to develop new ideas. If it is used many times, the same seed can give you great help to relate a lot of things, which you would have never thought of in your wildest dreams!
This is nothing but creativity. 19 Within no time you can start talking with your friends in English or any other language and never run out of the right words.
So guys,do give food to your thoughts by reading, reading and more reading. 20 Go and grab a book!
A.Hunger of the mind can be actually solved through wide reading.
B.Also this makes a great contribution to your vocabulary.
C.Reading can help you make more friends as well.

Dear friends,
Recently, some dog owners walk their dogs in uncivilized manners, such as walking them without leashes and letting them bark at people randomly. Consequently, not only is the environment of our community worsening, but it harms the harmonious relationships among neighbors.
Changing this situation requires considerable effort of dog owners. They are supposed to obey the rules of walking dogs, including preparing a leash whenever they go,picking up the shit and training dogs to behave themselves.
Hoping to see a clean and harmonious community.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

There were once two rabbits,Wanda the Wise and Frederick the Foolish, who were walking through a field. They were good friends and enjoyed their wander together.
On this walk, they came upon two carrots. One of the carrots had large leaves coming out of the top and the other looked much smaller from the surface.Frederick was excited and ran up to the carrot with the larger leaves.“I'll have this one,” he proudly exclaimed and proceeded to pulling it out from the ground.Wanda shrugged her shoulders and pulled out the other carrot, which turned out to be much bigger.Frederick was surprised and asked how this could possibly be.Wanda looked at her friend and replied,“You can't always judge a carrot by its leaves.”
They kept on walking and came across another pair of carrots, again with differentsized leaves. This time Frederick allowed his friend the first pick.Wanda hopped to each carrot, inspected (检查) and sniffed them carefully and,to Frederick's surprise, chose the carrot with the larger leaves.
As they each pulled their carrots out from the ground,Frederick was confused to see that his carrot was still smaller than Wanda's.
“You said that carrots with larger leaves are not always larger.I thought carrots with small leaves meant larger ones,” he said.
“No”,replied Wanda,“I said ‘Don't judge a carrot by its leaves’.It's also important to remember to think before you choose.”
Frederick nodded and they ate their carrots before continuing their stroll.
For a third time, they found two carrots, again with differentsized leaves.Frederick looked confused and didn't know what to do.Wanda indicated that he could choose which carrot to eat.

Frederick, the poor foolish rabbit, didn't really know what to do.He pretended to inspect and sniff them carefully, just as Wanda did,but in vain.He was about to pull the carrot with bigger leaves when he was torn inside. What if the other carrot was bigger? He was at a loss how to tell which carrot was bigger.“My best friend, please help me!” So eager was Frederick to eat the bigger carrot that he stamped his feet, sweating on his head.
