Fr mre than a decade, the twins have traveled t ne cuntry after anther arund the wrld, rewriting the muntain recrd bks abut places acrss the Middle East and West Africa. S far they have reached the peaks f mre than 100 cuntries and newly identified the highest pints in Tg, Guinea- Bissau and Ivry Cast.
Matthew, a research scientist at Lckheed Martin in Pal Alt, Califrnia, and Eric, an instructr in mechanical engineering at Seattle University, said their wrk was mtivated by a need fr accuracy and lve fr muntaineering. "If we're ging t g thrugh all the effrt t visit a cuntry and visit the highest muntain, we want t be sure that we have indeed visited the highest muntain," Matthew said. "We cnsider it assistance t future muntaineers t have an accurate survey dne s that they can fcus their effrts n getting t whichever peak they want t get t."
The twins' lve f muntaineering began when they were children with family trips t the Great Smky Muntains in the sutheastern United States. When they were students at the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy(MIT), they started climbing as many muntains as pssible. When yu’re bred, yu might start playing with a ball r ther bjects. Such behavir is cmmn in peple. Other animals like it t—that’s why a dg fetches a stick, r a cat bats at tys. Play is an enjyable way t pass the time. A new study finds that it’s nt just mammals that like t play. Bumblebees(大黄蜂)d it t, making them the first insects knwn t play.
In the study, Hiruni Samadi Galpayage Dna, an insect expert, did an experiment using 200 untrained bumblebees t see if they might play. Of thse, 45 wuld be marked with a number when they emerged as adults.
A pathway was set up frm the bumblebees’ nest t a feeding area. One side cntained small wden balls that rlled. The ther side had the same number f balls, but they were stuck t the flr. Half balls n each side were clred balls. The rest were left unpainted.
Fr three hurs a day ver 18 days, Galpayage Dna fund bumblebees weren’t s interested in the side where the balls didn’t mve, but they explred the side areas and interacted with the balls. Once they managed t rll a ball, they strngly preferred that side. They returned, climbing n the balls and rlling them arund. She als fund bumblebees preferred certain clrs f balls.
“There’s smething abut the mbility that is mre interesting fr the bumblebees than just clred bjects,” Galpayage Dna says. In anther experiment, she smetimes left the balls ut vernight. “When I came in the next day, I wuld always find sme bumblebees rlling the balls.” As with mammals, the bumblebees wh played the mst were the yunger nes. Their play tapered ff as they gt lder.
The scientists say it’s nt clear why the bumblebees rll the balls r whether they enjy it. But the experiment raises imprtant questins abut hw the insects’ minds wrk and whether they have feelings.
    28. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic?
    A. By describing the fun f play. B. By analyzing reasns fr bredm.
    C. By intrducing similar phenmena. D. By presenting animals’ cute images.

This year researchers expect the wrld t snap(按快门)1.35 trillin phtgraphs, r abut 3.7 billin per day. All thse pixels(像素)take up a lt f rm if they are stred n persnal cmputers r phnes, which is ne reasn why many peple stre their images in the clud. But unlike a hard n drive which can be encrypted(加密)t prtect its data, clud strage users have t trust that a tech platfrm will keep their private pictures safe. Nw a team f Clumbia University cmputer scientists has develped a tl t encrypt images stred n many ppular clud services while allwing authrized users t brwse and display their phtgraphs as usual.
Malicius(恶意的)attempts t access r leak clud-based phtgraphs can expse persnal infrmatin. In Nvember 2019, fr example, a bug in the ppular phtgraph strage app Ggle Phts mistakenly shared sme users' private vides with strangers. Security experts als wrry abut emplyees at clud strage cmpanies n purpse accessing users' images.
S the Clumbia researchers came up with a system called Easy Secure Phts(ESP), which they presented at a recent cnference. “We wanted t see if we culd make it pssible t encrypt data while using existing services,” says cmputer scientist Jasn Nieh, ne f the develpers f ESP. “Everyne wants t stay with Ggle Phts and nt have t register n a new encrypted-image clud strage service.”
T vercme this prblem, they created a tl that preserves blcks f pixels but mves them arund t effectively hide the phtgraph. First, ESP's algrithm(算法)divides a phtgraph int three separate files, each ne cntaining the image's red, green r blue clr data. Then the system hides the pixel blcks arund amng these three files(allwing a blck frm the red file, fr instance, t hide ut in the green r blue nes). But the prgram des nthing within the pixel blcks, where all the image prcessing happens. As a result, the files remain unchanged images but end up lking like grainy black-and-white nes t anyne wh accesses them withut the decryptin key.
    32. What's prbably the main purpse fr peple t stre images in the clud?
    A. T save strage rm. B. T make phts beautiful.
    C. T try a new strage way. D. T keep their privacy safe.
    33. Why might emplyees in clud strage cmpanies be distrusted by experts?
    A. They sell users' passwrds. B. They have invented new tls.
    C. They ften let ut persnal infrmatin. D. They may steal a glance at users' images.
    34. What's the advantage f ESP?
    A. It can prvide clear images. B. It can decrease the uplad time.
    C. It can classify images autmatically. D. It can encrypt data n the riginal platfrm.
    35. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
    A. Methd f decryptin. B. Image-prcessing technique.
    C. Separate files f images. D. Data analysis f clrs.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

D yu have an imprtant r favrite memry frm the past? Perhaps it was clapping fr gals. 36 By sharing ur memries, we can feel clser t ther peple and mre psitive abut what we've been thrugh.
    Hw des memry wrk?
Scientists believe there are tw levels f memry. One is shrt-term r wrking memry, which stays in yur brain fr nly 15-30 secnds. The ther level is lng-term r permanent memry, which can be stred fr days, mnths r even years.

Remembering the sadness f missing yur friends during lckdwn, and being happy and excited t see them again afterwards, are emtinal memries. 38
    Why are memries imprtant?

Infrmatin such as which schl yu g t and wh yur friends are is stred inside yur brain, ready fr when yu need it. 39 “If I miss seeing my grandparents, I remember staying with them in Devn. It makes me feel happy, like when I was there.” Heidi, 12, tld The Week.
40 When peple think f shared experience, what usually cmes t mind is being with clse thers, such as friends r family, and talking with them. By telling a funny r embarrassing stry—perhaps the time the dg stle the Christmas ham—we share feelings f jy r recgnitin f difficulties vercme, large r small. By sharing similar r nt-s-similar experiences, we empathize with and understand ne anther better.
    A. There are many uses fr memry.
    B. Memries can help yu wn well-being.
    C. Shared memries can cnnect yu t thers.
    D. Time cannt erase his memries f the past.
