Teacher asks students some questions“What’s the weather like today?” “Do you like the weather?” . 2. T shows a video about the storm. After that, T asks “How is the weather in the video ?” “Do you like the weather?” “Do you think the storm is a good thing or a bad thing for us?”. Then T says “The storm is a bad thing. It can bring us some problems. The houses, the trees will fall down. The people will lose money, even their lives.” Step II Before -reading 1. Lead-in T says “As we know, in summer, there are many rainstorms happening in the world every year. There is a story about a storm happening in America. In 2011, a heavy rainstorm hit the state, Alabama. Now, please look at the map of America. This is the state. It is beautiful and quiet. But after the storm, the state was in a mess. Here is a family. Now, look at the little boy. Ben and his parents went through the storm. Do you want to know more about the story? please open your books, and turn to page 35.” 2. Prediction T asks Ss to look at the photo of the passage and then asks “What can you see in the photo?” T asks Ss to look at the title of the passage and asks “What does the writer think of the storm?” “Can you find out the writer’s opinion in the passage?” T leads Ss to find out the topic sentence of the story. 3. Discussion T asks Ss “How can a storm bring people closer together?” Step III While-reading 1. Fast-reading (1) T asks “How many paragraphs of the passage are there?” (2) T says “According to the time order of the story, I divide it into 3 parts: before the storm, during the storm and after the storm. “ Then T asks Ss to read the passage quickly to find out which paras are the first part, the second part, the third one. 2. Careful-reading (1) Activity one: What was the weather like? T says “We know that the weather is different, is changing before the storm, during the storm and after the storm. So do you know what the weather was like?” Then asks Ss to read the passage carefully, and fill in the chart with some words. (2) Activity two: What were the people doing? T asks Ss “if the rainstorm comes, would you like to stay at home or stay outside?” T asks Ss to read it again and try to finish the second chart. (3) Activity three: Discussion T asks Ss “Is the storm a good thing or a bad thing?” Then T says “Each coin has two sides. Although the storm broke many things apart, it brought families and neighbors closer together.”Step IV After-reading 1. Listening Ss listen to the tap and read the passage again. 2. Retelling the story T let Ss to retell the story according to the mind map. Step V Discussion 1. Activity one: What other things can bring people closer together? T says “From the passage, we know that although the storm broke many things apart, it can bring people closer together.” and asks “ What other things can bring people closer together?” Then T gives an example first. T: Look at the pic, what’s the picture about? S: The wenchuan earthquake T: It was in 2008. When the earthquake happened in Sichuan. The people got together to fight against the earthquake. How about this pic. Do you know this? T: It’s Beijing Olympic Games. At that time, many people from all over the world came to Beijing to enjoy the game. T asks Ss to discuss in pair work 2. Activity two: How can we help each other in times of difficulty? T says “many things can bring people closer together, Work together, help each other. How can we help each other in times of difficulty?” T asks Ss to discuss in group work. 3. Activity three: What can we learn from the passage? T asks Ss to think about what we can learn from the passage. Then T leads Ss to know that (1) We should protect the environment. (2) When a natural disaster happens, we human beings should work together to help each other and overcome the difficulties.
