John and Mary had a nice home and two lovely children. John had just been asked to go on a business trip to another city for several days and Mary would go with him too. They hired a reliable woman to care for their children and returned home a little earlier than they had planned.
As they drove into their hometown, they found a home on fire. After having a look, Mary said, “Oh well, it isn’t our fire. Let’s go home.” But John drove closer and said, “That home belongs to Fred Jones who wouldn’t be off work yet. Maybe there is something we could do.”
John noticed an old lady screamed to him, “A children! Get the children!” John grabbed (抓住) her by the shoulder saying, “Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!” “In the basement,” cried the lady.
In spite of Mary’s disagreement, John soaked (浸湿) his clothes and ran to the basement which was full of smoke. He found the door and grabbed two children. As he left he could hear some more cry. He sent the two badly frightened children into the waiting room and asked how many more children were down there. The told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed, “John! Don’t go back! It’s dangerous! That house will fall down in any second!”
But he shook her off and went back. It seemed a very long time before he found both children and started back. As he climbed up the endless steps the thought went through his mind that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies next to him, and at last when they came out into the sunlight and fresh air, he found that he had just rescued his own children. Modern humans have a hard time controlling their desire to eat. Often you eat not because you are hungry, but because you are affected by many other things. How much you eat is strongly affected by how much those around you eat. People eating alone eat least. People eating with one other person eat 35 percent more than they do at home. People dining in a party of four eat 75percent more. Eating with overweight friends? You’ll eat more. Is your waitress overweight? You’ll eat more. Wide variety of food? You’ll eat more.
Plates can decide how sweet dessert tastes. If people ate it off a paper plate, they’d say, “This is good.” If they ate it off a fancy silver plate, they would say, “This is the greatest cake I’ve eaten in my entire life.”
Your knowledge about what makes food good or bad also affects how much you eat. You tend to eat more when you think the food is good, and less when you think it is bad. So Grandma’s cookies always taste better than other cookies. “Good food” even has a “health halo(光环) effect”. If we’re eating something healthy, we feel that everything in that meal is healthy. Due to this, people often believe that a cheese cake with a salad has fewer calories (卡路里) than the cheese cake alone. That’s perhaps also why eating organic (有机的) food might turn you into an annoying guy. Your brain may use anything that makes you feel good about your own morality to excuse your immoral behavior .
Food and hunger affect your judgment too. Hungry judges give more serious sentences. Kids who don’t eat breakfast behave worse than kids who eat their breakfast. People who have low blood sugar are more likely than the average person to have trouble concentrating and controlling their unpleasant emotions.
12. What is mentioned as a cause of overeating?
A. Suffering from great loneliness.
B. Being served by a helpful waitress.
C. Being treated to high quality food.
D. Eating with many friends.
13. According to the passage, an annoying person may be one who ______.
A. finds any excuse for eating more
B. is crazy about the quality of plates
C. competes with others in making cookies
D. teaches people to stick to morality
14. According to the passage, people are more likely to make a bad judgment when ______.
A. they don’t feel hungry
B. they aren’t overweight
C. they have low blood sugar
D. they know little about food
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. When Can’t We Go on a Diet?
B. What Affects Eating?
C. How to Make Good Food
D. Where to Find Safe Food
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B
【解析】
本文是说明文。文章介绍影响吃的过量的几个因素。
【12题详解】

【13题详解】
句意理解题。根据第三段That’s perhaps also why eating organic (有机的) food might turn you into an annoying guy. Your brain may use anything that makes you feel good about your own morality to excuse your immoral behavior .可推断出一个令讨厌的人是一个为自己吃过量找借口的人。故选A。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“People who have low blood sugar are more likely than the average person to have trouble concentrating and controlling their unpleasant emotions.”低血糖的人更有可能不专注以及无法控制他们不开心的情绪,因而更有可能做出错误的判断。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。文章第一段便可看出本文大意“Modern humans have a hard time controlling their desire to eat. Often you eat not because you are hungry, but because you are affected by many other things. ”现代人很难控制他们的食欲。通常他们吃不是因为他们饿了,而是受到很多因素的影响。下文介绍影响人们过度饮食的因素,故“什么影响吃?”作为本文的标题最合适。故选B。

More students than ever before are taking a gap year (间隔年) before going to university. It used to be called the “year off” between school and university. The gap-year phenomenon originated (起源) with the months left over to Oxbridge applicants between entrance exams in November and the start of the next academic year.
This year, 25,310 students who have accepted places in higher education institutions have put off their entry until next year, according to statistics on university entrance provided by the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS).
That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. Tony Higgins from UCAS said that the statistics are good news for everyone in higher education. “Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible.” he said.
But not everyone is happy. Owain James, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship—young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education. “New students are now aware that they are likely to leave university up to £ 15,000 in debt. It is not surprising that more and more students are taking a gap year to earn money to support their study for the degree. NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacation periods,” he said.
1. What do we learn about the gap year from the text?
A. It is flexible in length. B. It is a time for relaxation.
C. It is increasingly popular. D. It is required by universities.
2. According to Tony Higgins, students taking a gap year .
A. are better prepared for college studies
B. know a lot more about their future jobs
C. are more likely to leave university in debt
D. have a better chance to enter top universities
3. How does Owain James feel about the gap-year phenomenon?
A. He’s puzzled. B. He’s worried.
C. He’s surprised. D. He’s annoyed.
4. What would most students do on their vacation according to NUS statistics?
A. Attend additional courses. B. Make plans for the new term.
C. Earn money for their education. D. Prepare for their graduate studies.
【答案】1. C 2. A 3. B 4. C

C 推理判断题。由短文第一段More students than ever before are taking a gap year (间隔年) before going to university. 及第三段第一句话That is a record 14.7% increase in the number of students taking a gap year. 可知间隔年越来越受到欢迎,因此选C。
【2题详解】
A 细节理解题。由人名定位到短文第三段。根据第三段他说的话Students who take a well-planned year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature and responsible可知他在说它的优点,有间隔年之后再去上大学,会让人更成熟有责任感,对大学的学习有帮助。故选A。
【3题详解】
B 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段But not everyone is happy.然后提到Owain argued that the increase is evidence of student hardship—young people are being forced into earning money before finishing their education.可知他说认为越来越多的学生选择gap year 是因为他们会在gap year期间去挣大学的费用,他们是被迫的,所以,对此表示担忧。故选B。
【4题详解】
C细节理解题。根据文章最后一句话 NUS statistics show that over 40% of students are forced to work during term time and the figure increases to 90% during vacation periods可知:90%的学生要在假期挣学费。

Edward rose early on the New-year morning. He looked in every room and wished a Happy New Year to his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat that to those he might meet.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some petty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart, expecting to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family. “I wish you a happy New Year.” said Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man shook his head. “You are not from this country.” said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak his language. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children shaking with cold, as if (好像) to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in trouble. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife. They were excited and said something in their language, which doubtless meant, “We thank you so much that we will remember you all the time.”
When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” said he, “I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry then.” He went on, “I think I can wait for my books till next New Year.” “My dear boy,” said his father, “here are some books for you, more as a prize for your goodness of heart than as a New-Year gift.”
“I saw you give the money cheerfully to the poor German family. It was nice for a little boy to do so. Be always ready to help others and every year of your life will be to you a Happy New Year.”
5. Why did the poor man shake his head when Edward spoke to him?
A. He couldn't understand the boy.
B. He wouldn't accept the money.

D. He was too cold to say anything.
6. How much did Edward give the poor family?

Arriving in Sydney on his own from India, my husband, Rashid, stayed in a hotel for a short time while looking for a house for me and our children.
During the first week of his stay, he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone. He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport.
He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organized again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.
Late in the evening, the phone rang. It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husband’s name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶) that had been left out on the footpath.
My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents. Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend.
That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.

On a Sunday morning, I was driving down a road and saw something I couldn’t believe. A little girl, less than two, was pushing her stroller (婴儿车) across the road. It was Sunday morning and traffic was not heavy.
I stopped my car at once and ran toward her. This little girl knew enough to run from a stranger. I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road.
Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying “bad girl” to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word.
I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. “Do you feel cold, Mom?” asked my son. I just shook my head.
After this happened, I thought about how thankful I am. Even though the father didn’t say thank you, I feel that I did something good. Doing something for someone else is pleasing, even when it’s only a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

As PhD research goes, Brian Wisenden was enviable, watching baby fish swimming swiftly through the clear waters in the Costa Rican tropical dry forest. By recording their growth and numbers, he hoped to look at their risks of being eaten. Instead, he witnessed something odd. Many groups were increasing in numbers. In these groups, some were smaller than others, suggesting they weren’t siblings (兄弟姐妹). Wisenden had accidentally discovered that the fish, called convict cichlids, adopt each other’s babies. Why would they do that, he wondered?
In the human world, we think of adoption as a selfless act. But in nature, its presence is puzzling. Taking on the burden of bringing up babies with no genetic link would seem to reduce an animal’s chances of survival or at least provide no gain. Yet, adoption is surprisingly common in the world.
Take the eastern grey kangaroo. Between 2008 and 2013, Wisenden followed the fates of 326 baby kangaroos in the National Park in Victoria and recorded 11 cases of pouch swapping. The circumstances behind some of these adoptions aren’t known, but four were straight swaps and another four occurred after a mother had lost her own baby.
How come? Before independence, baby kangaroos go through a period inside and outside their mother’s pouch. Following out-of-pouch forays, mothers normally sniff their young before allowing them back in, but Wisenden’s team suspect that during an emergency they may skip the sniff test, allowing a vulnerable baby to quickly climb in before fleeing from danger. Once inside the wrong pouch, the young may fake the mother’s odor, making them smell confusingly like her own progeny. So, poor baby recognition is the prime cause of “accidental” adoption.
Some of nature’s adoptions are, actually, driven by young looking for better prospects. In burrower bugs, for example, females lay a nest of eggs close to those of unrelated bugs. Mother bugs tend their developing eggs before they hatch, then feed their babies nuts from weedy mint plants. Finding nuts is a competitive business, so not every mother bug gets her fair share. And if the delivery rate isn’t up to scratch, clever young may abandon their mothers to join a better-fed group. That’s similar to behavior in several species of gull whose babies, if poorly fed, may leave home in search of better parents.
The consequences of adoption following mistaken identity can be dire. The true babies of adopting mothers were abandoned. But it can have remarkable benefits, not just for adoptees but also for adoptive parents.
8. It can be inferred from the passage that Wisenden’s findings are .
A. too weird to be witnessed B. out of his own expectations
C. envied by his peer co-researchers D. a sound proof of his research object
9. Which is NOT the reason for adoption in the animal kingdom?
A. Baby animals’ looking for better parenting.
B. Parents’ failure to recognize their own babies.
C. Selfless adoption commonly seen in animal world.
D. Parents, inability to provide enough food.
10. The underlined word “vulnerable” in the fourth paragraph means .
A. weak and easily attacked B. naughty and easily hurt
C. independent and well-fed D. fragile and poorly raised
11. What will the author most probably talk about next?
A. The benefits for baby animals. B. The benefits for adopters.
C. The consequences of adoption. D. The consequences of wrong identity.

In 2018 measles ( 麻疹) infected almost 10 million people around the world and killed 420. Countries that achieved high vaccination(苗接种) rates or had formerly eradicated the disease also failed to have narrow escape .
Fortunately, apart from troublesome measles, many inspirational global health stories happened in the last decade, new viruses, vaccines, and treatments were discovered, once again showing the significance of science.
Huge progress was made in virus research. For instance, a kind of virus named Medusavirus, which can turn an amoeba, a kind of single-celled living creature, into a "stone", was identified by Japanese scientists. The virus has one of the largest and most complicated viral genomes(基因组) that have ever been found. Besides, a new virus, Alongshan virus, was discovered in a group of patients in Inner Mongolia. Researchers also found for the first time that an insect RNA virus, the Providence virus, was able to infect plants and mammalian cells, which indicated that plants could serve as hosts of human viruses.
We also saw improvement in treatments and vaccines. Ebola virus is good case in point. According to the Royal Free Hospital in Britain, the drug MIL77, which had been developed by Academy of Military Medical Sciences, an institution in China, jointly with some other companies, was adopted to treat a Briton infected with the disease and helped her recover from the deadly virus. This has indicated China's capability of offering an economical and practical drug fighting Ebola virus worldwide. Furthermore, the Chinese and British medical research teams have worked on genome sequencing of the virus, making it possible to develop drugs and vaccines that are more effective. Therefore, Ebola is no longer a death sentence.
Thanks to investment in global supervision transnational partnership, and scientific research, many new viruses, vaccines, and treatments were successfully discovered in the last decade. But the journey will continue and much more needs to be done. For example, we need to have a deeper understanding of bow climate change influences the spread of infectious diseases
12. What does the underlined word "eradicated” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Got rid of. B. Conducted research on C. Lost control of D. Come down with.
13. What is true about the Providence virus?
A. It is a newly identified virus . B. It has the largest viral genome
C. It was discovered in Inner Mongolia. D. It can infect both plants and humas
14. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. MIL77 is an effective Ebola vaccine.
B. No death will be caused by Ebola virus anymore.
C. China has made great contributions to fighting Ebola virus.
D. Genome sequencing of Ebola virus is too complicated to he carried out.
15 What is the best title for the text?
A Science keeps improving global health B. A victory over deadly diseases
C. Global cooperation in fighting viruses D. Serious global health problems

Australian consumers in Adelaide are taking part in a study to help realize the potential for edible(可食用的)insects as a food industry. Consumers' attitudes are being put to the test at Adelaide Central Market with an offering of roasted crickets and ants, mealworm cookies and cricket energy bars.
Researchers want to further probe consumers' attitudes towards edible insects, and evaluate taste preferences and consumers5 willingness to buy such products. In an earlier online survey of 820 Australian consumers, the researchers found that 20% had tried edible insects. Of those surveyed, 46% said they'd be willing to try a cookie made from insect flour.
" In the earlier survey, consumers said they were most likely to try flavored or roasted insects and least likely to want to try cockroaches or spiders," Dr Crump says. "In this taste test, we've chosen products that consumers are most likely to react positively towards―apologies to anyone keen to try a cockroach or spider. The samples we'll be offering consumers provide a good spread of the available insect products in Australia' s marketplaces, some of which may be more acceptable than others."
Dr Crump says the research will help guide the development of an edible insect industry. In Australia, edible insects remain a new agricultural industry. Consumer research is needed to improve consumer acceptance of edible insects, so as to realize their potential as an alternative protein(蛋白质)source.
Professor Kerry Wilkinson says edible insects could play a role in global food security. "Problems such as climate change, increasing global population, shortage of agricultural land and rapidly changing consumer preferences are common, particularly in developing countries where there is an increasing demand for high quality animal protein," he says. "These food security problems will only be overcome by a change in food consumption habits. Edible insects could provide one solution. We want to look at ways of overcoming barriers to insect consumption in Australia.
4. What does the underlined word "probe" in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Explore. B. Influence. C. Describe. D. Compare.
5. Why have the researchers chosen certain insect products for the taste test?
A. Because they are richer in protein than other insects.
B. Because it is not difficult to flavor or roast them.
C. Because they are widely acceptable in Australia.
D. Because they are probably to consumers' taste.
6. In Kerry Wilkinson's opinion, how can consumers help remove food security problems?
A. By taking in less animal protein.
B. By changing their eating habits.
C. By expanding agricultural land.
D. By controlling their appetite.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Insects Make Food Security No Longer a Problem
B. Could Edible Insects Help Global Food Security?
C. Edible Insects Prove an Alternative Protein Source
D. What Counts Most When It Gomes to Edible Insects?
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. B 7. B

A sense of humor is something highly valued. A person who has a great sense of humor is often considered to be happy and socially confident. However, humor is a double-edged sword. Sometimes it can damage self-respect and annoy others.
People who use bonding humor tell jokes and generally lighten the mood. They're thought to be good at reducing the tension in uncomfortable situations. They often make fun of their common experiences, and sometimes they may even laugh off their own misfortunes. The basic message they deliver is: We're all alike, we find the same things funny, and we're all in this together.
Put-down humor, on the other hand, is an aggressive type of humor used to criticize others through teasing. When it's aimed against politicians, as it often is, it's extremely funny and mostly harmless. But in the real world, it may have a harmful effect. An example of such humor is telling friends an embarrassing story about another friend. When challenged about their teasing, the put-down jokers might claim that they are "just kidding," thus allowing themselves to avoid responsibility. This type of humor, though considered by some people to be socially acceptable, may hurt the feelings of the one being teased and thus have a bad effect on personal relationships.
Finally, in hate-me humor, the joker is the target of the joke for the amusement of others. This type of humor was used by comedians John Belushi and Chris Farley—both of whom suffered for their success in show business. A small amount of such humor is charming, but routinely offering oneself up to be embarrassed destroys one's self-esteem, and fosters depression and anxiety.
So it seems that being funny isn't necessarily an indicator of good social skills and well-being. In certain cases, it may actually have a negative effect on interpersonal relationships.

A. joking about experiences they share

Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars. lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes(废气). So the city began a scheme(计划)to improve the situation.
Under the Velib scheme ('Velib' comes from velo liberte, or 'bicycle freedom') people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour-on the bike is free, but if you don't return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it's only € 1 a day or € 29 a year! The bicycles are heavy (25kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this. But not everybody thinks it's a great idea. One Parisian said. “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won't use a bicycle-they'll still use their cars.”
A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won't solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren't any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too. “

The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We meet them everyday. A few days ago,my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine. I was amazed. The sad truth is, great talent is not enough.
l am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $ 100,000 a year. A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase," They are one skill a way from great wealth.”
There is an old saying that goes, "Job means 'just over broke'". And unfortunately, I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers "live within their means" They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.
When I ask the classes I teach, "How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald's? " almost all the students raise their hands. I then ask,“So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald's makes more money than you?”The answer is obvious: McDonald's is excellent at business systems. The reason why so many talented people are poor is that they focus on building a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.

A. Lacking financial intelligence.
B. Not working hard enough.
C. Not making full use of their talents.
D. Having no specialized skills.
11. What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A. What schools should teach students.

D. How young people can find a satisfactory job.

A recent study suggests that vitamin D pills can help speed up the time taken for burns to heal and prevent scarring(结疤). The vitamin, which is produced naturally in the body when the skin is exposed to sunshine, is believed to help protect against burning.
Previous studies have shown that vitamin D pills help decrease redness and swelling after sunburn, and may be one of the reasons why the body produces the chemical.
The research from Birmingham University, has found they may also help relieve other types of burn. Researchers monitored 38 patients who had suffered serious burns for a year and recorded their levels of vitamin D. They found that those with the highest levels of vitamin D had better wound healing and fewer scars.
Professor Janet Lord said: “Low vitamin D levels were associated with worse results in burn patients including life-threatening infections(感染),death and delayed wound healing. Major burn injury severely reduces vitamin D levels and adding this vitamin back may be a simple, safe and cost-effective way to improve the condition for burn patients.” Professor Lord and her team are now focusing on finding out why there is a rapid loss of vitamin D in patients immediately following burn injury and hope that they may be able to prevent this in future.
The amount of reduction in patients’ vitamin D levels was not related to the severity(严重程度) of the burn, so levels may also be decreased in minor burn injury, suggesting taking vitamin D pills could also help people with everyday burns. Public Health England now recommends that all Britons take vitamin D pills in the winter because it is impossible to make sufficient quantities in the darker months.
12. What does the new study find?
A. People with low vitamin D levels get burned easily.
B. Vitamin D helps with the recovery from burn injury.
C. Vitamin D pills aid in reducing the swelling from burns.
D. Vitamin D is more beneficial to serious burns than minor burns.
13. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A. The severity of one's burn reflects his vitamin D levels.
B. Vitamin D pills are more needed in the autumn months.
C. Burn patients lacking vitamin D are at high risk of infection.
D. Minor burns have no effect on patients’ vitamin D levels.
14. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The researchers. B. Vitamin D pills.
C. Previous studies. D. Some kinds of vitamins.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Vitamin D: A Necessity for Our Health
B. Vitamin D Pills: When Are They Needed?
C. Vitamin D: How Much Does the Body Need?
D. Vitamin D Pills: Heal Burns &. Prevent Scarring
