China is widely knwn fr its ancient civilizatin (文明) which has cntinued all the way thrugh int mdern times, in the face f many ups and dwns in its histry. There are many reasns why this has been pssible, but ne f the main factrs has been the Chinese writing system.
At the beginning, written Chinese was a picture-based language. It dates back several thusand years t the use f lnggu-animal bnes and shells n which marks were carved (雕刻) by ancient Chinese peple. In ancient China, characters began as simple drawings f natural bjects — trees, rivers, muntains and hills, hrses and xen, human beings themselves, etc. The earliest character-like drawings are “pictgraphic” in quality. Cmpared with ther scripts (字体) in the wrld, Chinese characters appeared much earlier with the first evidence f the characters arund 5,000 r mre years ld. Mre than 50 kinds f carved marks appeared arund the Banp Site and ther nearby places. They were shaped and rdered in a certain rule and they have the same characteristics as tday’s simple characters — scientists judge them t be the riginal Chinese characters.
By the Shang Dynasty (arund 1600-1046 BCE) , these marks had becme a well-develped writing system. Over the years, the systems develped int different frms, as it was a time when peple were divided gegraphically, leading t many kinds f dialects (方言) and characters. This, hwever, changed under Emperr Qin Shi Huang f the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BCE).
Emperr Qin Shi Huang united the six majr states int ne cuntry where the Chinese writing system began t develp in ne directin. That writing methd was f great imprtance in uniting the Chinese peple and culture.
Written Chinese has als becme an imprtant means by which China’s present is cnnected with its past. Peple in mdern times can read the classic wrks which were written by Chinese in ancient times. Chinese character, therefre, is a bridge between the present and the past.
Tday, the Chinese writing system is still an imprtant part f Chinese culture. As China plays a greater rle in the wrld, an increasing number f internatinal students are beginning t shw their lve t China’s culture and histry thrugh this amazing language.
27.Why did the writing system develp int different frms in ancient times?
A.Because it was a picture-based language.B.Because it was in different animal bnes.
C.Because Emperr Qin Shi Huang changed it.D.Because peple were gegraphically divided.
28.The wrd “uniting” in Paragraph 4 prbably means “________”.
A.increasing r becming a larger grupB.jining and getting tgether t make ne
C.cnnecting r bridging the writing systemsD.guiding and helping t the ne directin
29.Hw did Chinese writing develp?
A.Frm a picture-based language t different writing systems t united system.
B.Frm simple characters t simple drawing rules t different writing frms.
C.Frm clrful carved marks t different characters t simple bject drawings.
D.Frm simple writing rule t different scripts t well-develped writing system.

Every June in Califrnia, judges cast their eye ver a line-up f dgs t decide n the winner f the Wrld Ugliest Dg cntest. Invariably, the dgs fr this hnur melt the hearts f animal lvers acrss the wrld. Why d we find ugly animals s attractive? And what makes these dd- lking creatures s cute?
Evlutin (进化) plays a rle. Accrding t Austrian zlgist Knrad Lrenz, human attractin t baby features, such as big eyes, large heads and sft bdies, is. an evlutinary adaptatin (适应) that helps ensure that adults care fr their children, ensuring the survival f their species. These baby features were cined “baby schema (婴儿图示)” by Lrenz in 1943. Odd-lking animals such as blbfish and bulldgs all share these baby features that make peple lve and want t prtect them. And these baby features increase a persn’s prtective behaviur, attentin and willingness t care fr these animals and reduce the likelihd f aggressin (攻击性), says Marta Brgi, a lead researcher, wh studies baby schema.
A 2014 study led by Brgi analysed the eye mvements f children aged three t six and fund that they were mre fcused n images f dgs, cats and humans with the baby features. They als asked the children t grade the images frm ne t five pints, with ne being “nt cute” and five being “very cute”. The children ranked rund faces with high freheads, big eyes and small nses as cuter than thse with fewer baby features. The study shwed the cncept f “cuteness” develped at a very yung age, with children as yung as three shwing a preference fr animals and humans with big eyes, buttn nses and rund faces.
Besides making cute pets, ugly animals have ther value fr scientific research. Fr example, the blbfish, which have adapted t the extreme envirnments in unusual ways, prvide valuable infrmatin t research hw t survive certain dangers. Scientists are interested in studying these animals t understand whether their bilgy might prvide fresh insights that culd lead t treatments such as cancer, heart disease and ther diseases fr human beings.
There are als culture-led factrs that drive ur bsessin (痴迷) with ugly-cute animals.“ The ugly-cute thing is very fashinable,” says Rwena Packer, a lecturer in cmpanin animal behaviur. This is partly driven by scial media, with many celebrities and influencers shwing ff their pet French bulldgs n Instagram, she says.
But there are still sme wrries abut peple’s bsessin with ugly-cute animals. Animal dctrs are urging peple nt t chse a flat-faced dg breed, because they suffer frm serius health prblems. Fr example, French bulldgs, which have been selectively bred, experience breathing difficulties, repeated skin infectins and eye diseases.
S while strange features such as big eyes and wrinkly faces may make us smile, we might want t recnsider ur bsessin with “ugly-cute” pets.
30.What features f animals might make peple think them attractive?
A.Thin faces.B.Big nses.C.Small eyes.D.Sft bdies.
31.What can we learn frm the passage?
A.Children aged three t six prefer cute dgs and cats t ther bjects.
B.The features f baby schema in dgs and cats affect children’s lve fr them.
C.Celebrities warn pet keepers f the pssible health prblems n scial media.
D.Marta Brgi believes ugly-cute pets are mre willing t care fr their babies.
32.The research int ugly animals can help ________.
A.gain new insights int their living habitsB.explre reasns fr their strange appearances
