      A
Mre than 200 kilmeters ff Nrway’s cast in the Nrth Sea sits the wrld’s first ffshre carbn capture (捕获) and strage prject. Set up in 1996, the Sleipner prject remves CO2 frm natural gas t make it marketable. But instead f releasing (释放) the CO2 int the atmsphere, peple bury this greenhuse gas undergrund. This prject stres arund 1 millin metric tns f CO2 per year and is praised by many as a pineering success in glbal attempts t cut dwn greenhuse gas emissins.
Gradually stpping using fssil fuels is the key t reducing emissins and dealing with climate change. Hwever, a set f technlgies called carbn capture, utilizatin and strage (CCUS) is able t help achieve the wrld’s gals: cutting CO2 emissins by 50% by 2030 and reaching net-zer emissins by 2050. These technlgies can capture, use r stre the CO2 prduced by pwer plants r industrial activities, r take it directly frm the air. The Intergvernmental Panel n Climate Change, a UN rganizatin respnsible fr assessing climate change science, lists CCUS as ne f the necessary ways t cut dwn emissins and meet temperature cntrl gals.
      Carbn Capture, Utilizatin and Strage
CCUS technlgies ften capture CO2 frm cal r natural gas pwer generatin r industrial prcesses, such as steel manufacturing. The CO2 is cmpressed (压缩) int a liquid under high pressure s that it can be easily transprted thrugh pipelines t sites where it may be stred r used fr ther purpses.
      1. What can we learn abut the Sleipner prject?
      A. It takes CO2 ut f natural gas.
      B. It aims t bury CO2 undergrund.
      C. It prduces natural gas by capturing CO2
      D. It has stred 1 millin metric tns f CO2 since 1996.
      2. What can be inferred frm the picture?
      A. The primary functin f CO2.B. The limitatin f the CCUS.
      C. The whle prcess f treating CO2D. The perating csts f the CCUS.
      3. Why is CO2 cmpressed int a liquid accrding t the text?
      A. T enable its release at a higher rate.
      B. T allw it t be mixed with natural gas.
      C. T measure the ttal amunt f the captured CO2.
      D. T make its transprtatin thrugh pipelines easier.
      B
Fan Siyan was brn in 1990 in Pizhu, a city in Jiangsu Prvince. After she graduated frm university in 2012, she faced a dilemma (两难): accept a cmfrtable, decent-paying jb in a busy city r return t her hmetwn t wrk in the fields, where she was raised. After much cnsideratin, she chse the latter. In this way, she culd use her knwledge t help her fellw villagers live better.
Shrtly after she mved back, Fan fund ut many f the farmers suffered ecnmic lsses because they lacked technical skills. She quickly realized agriculture was nt simply planting and harvesting; rather, it required cnstant learning and explratin. She began studying agricultural techniques, and cnsulting experts, and she gradually gained rich practical experience.
“T grw a business, ne cannt just rely n their wn strength,” Fan has said many times. In 2016, she c-funded Dazhuang Agricultural Science and Technlgy Develpment Cmpany with several like-minded partners. They develped a demnstratin base t prmte a mdern, industrialized vegetable plantatin, which cvered 6 hectares f land. They wrked tirelessly as they cnducted research, develped vegetable seeds, and prmted agricultural technlgies. Nw the cmpany has expanded its seedling base frm 6 hectares t 38 hectares.
In 2022, Fan established a field wmen’s hme. She held varius training sessins, addressing marketing, planting techniques and family management. By the end f 2024, Fan had helped mre than 200 wmen secure jbs, 19 wmen start family farms, and 41 wmen further their educatin. With her help, many rural wmen have begun businesses. Tgether, thse wmen have becme a vital frce in rural revitalizatin (振兴).
Fan’s effrts have earned her widespread recgnitin. She was chsen as a March 8th Red-Banner Hlder in 2023. Fan says she will cntinue leading villagers in wrking hard and using practical actins t shulder the respnsibility f being a “new farmer”. She believes, with a cllective effrt, rural areas will becme even mre beautiful and brilliant.
      4. Why did Fan decide t return hme?
      A. T find a decent and high-paying jb.B. T explre agricultural techniques.
      C. T escape the stressful life in big cities.D. T apply her knwledge t helping villagers.
      5. What did Fan discver sn after mving back?
      A. Farming required science.B. Farming had lw prfits.
      C. Farmers needed ecnmic aid.D. Farmers ignred educatin.
      6. What did Fan stress in paragraph 3?
      A. The hardship in running a business.B. The significance f strng leadership.
      C. The great pwer f cperatin.D. The prspect f mdern agriculture.
      7. What is the purpse f Fan’s field wmen’s hme?
      A. T help wmen find jbs in cities.B. T ffer psitins t rural wmen.
      C. T manage family issues fr wmen.D. T imprve wmen’s verall ability.
      C
Eggs laid by dinsaurs have prvided experts with a new way t tell prehistric time. By lking t radiactive minerals taken up by eggshells in the deep past, experts have uncvered a nvel methd t determine when thse eggs were laid.
Rather than figuring ut the dates f fssils (化石) frm the rcks cntaining them, the new study prpses that radiactive minerals like uranium in fssil eggshells can be used t directly date the fssils and imprve prehistric timelines. Experts dig up and study fssils s we can recnstruct the stry f life n Earth, but a stry withut a timeline is at best, meaningless, and at wrst, misleading. Withut a sense f when a prehistric creature lived, a fssil ut f cntext in time and space is actually useless.
Up until nw, the prehistric timeline has been set by the rcks in which fssils are buried. When ancient vlcanes pured ut ht liquid rck and ash (灰烬), the utpurings f the eruptins cntained radiactive minerals like uranium. Uranium turns t lead at a cnstant rate ver time, and fr decades scientists have been able t lk at the rati (比例) f uranium t lead in a rck sample t calculate just hw lng ag that rck must have frmed.
The prblem fr experts is that many fssils are fund in layers (地层) that lack these radiactive timekeepers. If a dinsaur fssil wasn’t fund in a rck layer full f ash r slidified vlcanic rcks, they culd nly rughly estimate the fssil’s age.
“There are imprtant dinsaur sites in Nrth America and Asia that preserve eggshells and bnes but they haven’t been accurately dated due t lack f ash layers,” says Darla Zelenitsky, an expert at University f Calgary. Thugh she warns that “dinsaur eggshells aren’t fund very ften,” she ntes that with uranium-lead dating, “when they are fund, they culd help us figure ut the age f fssil sites, especially in places that dn’t have vlcanic ash layers.”
      8. What is the main cntributin f the new research?
      A. Prviding a straight way t date fssils.
      B. Identifying previusly unknwn dinsaurs.
      C. Discvering new minerals in eggshells.
      D. Revealing the extinctins f ancient creatures.
      9. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
      A. The prcess f fssil frmatin in rcks.
      B. The danger f ancient vlcanic eruptins.
      C. The reasn fr studying prehistric life.
      D. The principle f rck-based dating methds.
      10. What limited the previus dating methd?
      A. The shrtage f fssil samples.B. The unreliability f the technlgy.
      C. The high dependence n specific rcks.D. The high cst f cnducting tests.
      11. What is Zelenitsky’s view n the new methd?
      A. It will replace all existing techniques.B. It is useful where vlcanic ash is absent.
      C. It has prved t be highly accurate.D. It makes finding eggshells much easier.
      D
Every autumn, as leaves turn frm green t brwn and flat t the grund, we turn int a natin f utdr undertakers. There will be raking (耙), and pile-making, and paper bags stuffed with leaves, lined up alng the edges f sidewalks like defensive twers.
I first encuntered this strange practice as a child, shrtly after my family arrived in Cnnecticut in 1989. America’s war n leaves made n sense t me then, and it makes n sense t me nw. Healthy sil requires “dampness and heat and warmth,” says Annabel Renwick, a native plant expert. Leaves prvide all three, whether yu leave them where they fall, spread them in flwer beds, r put them in a cmpst (堆肥) pile.
Why d s many f us spend mney and effrt sweeping all that natural richness away? “I think it’s a habit,” Renwick said. Fr many peple, a lawn cvered with fallen leaves ges against their sensibilities. It suggests a husehld that lacks rules, r wrks by rules ther than the nes mst f us have been taught t accept.
I’ve cme t think that this phenmenn is amng the mst pernicius frces that can wrk n a sciety r an individual. We keep ding the same thing because the emtinal and cultural cst f ding smething new is simply t high. We sink int habits we never really meant t adpt, habits we knw are nt making us happy r healthy.
Whatever else leaves are, they are real. As they change clr, dry up and flame ut, they remind us f the beauty f life, and f life’s impermanence (无常). A drp f existential awareness may even make us a mre caring sciety. After all, we t are leaves, facing the unavidable autumn. D yu really want t spend yur time n Earth arguing with thers nline? A carpet f leaves is alive with clr and life, an cean f reds and brwns. Dn’t wrry abut the spiders. Dive right in.
      12. Hw des the authr lead in the tpic?
      A. By listing examples.B. By giving a definitin.
      C. By describing scenes.D. By making a cmparisn.
      13. What is the primary reasn fr peple clearing leaves accrding t Renwick?
      A. Scientific advice.B. Cmmn practice.
      C. Health cncern.D. Ecnmic benefit.
      14. What des the underlined wrd “pernicius” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
      A. Harmful.B. Useful.C. Precius.D. Inspiring.
      15. What des the authr advise readers t d abut fallen leaves?
      A. Clean them fr a better envirnment.B. Accept and enjy their natural state.
      C. Appreciate their eclgical functins.D. Make full use f them fr artistic aims.

Yga is ne f the mst ppular fitness methds tday. ____16____ An analysis f 30 cntrlled trials shwed regular, high-intensity (高强度的) yga is mre strngly assciated with imprved sleep than walking, resistance training (阻力训练) and cmbinatin exercise.
When researchers analyzed the data, they fund that high-intensity yga fr less than 30 minutes, twice a week, was the best exercise fr sleep imprvement. ____17____ Psitive results were seen in as few as 8 t 10 weeks.
____18____ It fund that aerbic (有氧的) exercise r mid-intensity exercise three times a week is the mst effective way t imprve sleep quality. One f the studies, hwever, did indicate yga had mre significant effects n sleep utcmes than ther exercise types. Besides, yga is difficult t categrize as either aerbic r anaerbic. And its intensity can vary depending n the technique used. Perhaps these differences can explain why the utcmes differ frm trial t trial.
The mst recent analysis cannt explain why yga may be particularly helpful fr sleep. ____19____ Nt nly can yga raise the heart rate and push the muscles, it can als adjust breathing. Breath cntrl can activate the parasympathetic nervus (副交感神经) system, which is invlved in “rest and digestin”. Sme studies even suggest yga cntrls brainwave activity patterns, which culd prmte deeper sleep.
While exercise in general is helpful fr sleep, studies that cmpare specific exercises and their lng-term effects are lacking. We shuld be careful when interpreting findings frm studies n sleep disturbances, given the limited number f studies included and the unique characteristics f the ppulatin with sleep disturbances. Our bdies and brains are all different, and there’s n ne-size-fits-all slutin t sleep disturbances. ____20____
      A. Hwever, several pssibilities exist.
      B. Different exercises tend t have the same effect.
      C. We cannt ignre the significance f ding sprts.
      D. Sweating n a yga blanket is just ne available ptin f many.
      E. The findings are smewhat incnsistent with a previus analysis.
      F. And it culd be ne f the best exercises fr imprving sleep in the lng run.
      G. Walking was the next best frm f physical activity, fllwed by resistance exercise.

This meant that when the cncert started and the peple in the frnt rw decided t stay standing, he culd nt see past them, nly catching glimpses f the stage between their bdies. It was bvius that he was upset, and it was tearing at my heart that he was nt able t enjy the shw,and I culd nt either.
I did ask the grup in frnt if they were ging t stay standing, and the answer was a definite yes. They weren’t ding anything wrng. Thugh I was disappinted, I understd that they had paid their mney t and wanted t enjy themselves, which was their right.
S I decided t g t guest services fr help. The lady was very understanding, but all she culd ffer was restricted-view seats, althugh clser t the stage. Smiling, she gave me three tickets and tld me which dr t g thrugh. I quickly grabbed my kids, and we dashed t the crrect dr. T ur surprise, ur seats weren’t beside the stage.
