      Fr the past 13 years, Martin Burrws has been wrking as a lng-distance truck driver. Spending up t five nights a week n the rad can be a lnely business, leaving him with plenty f time t ntice his surrundings. “I kept seeing mre rubbish everywhere and it was getting n my nerves. I decided I had t d smething abut it,” he says. One day, he stpped his vehicle, tk ut a trash bag and started picking up the garbage. The satisfactin after clearing a small area was remarkable.

      A new artificial intelligence (AI) sftware is nw able t explain difficult-t-read texts n cuneifrm tablets (楔形文字泥板) . It was develped by a team frm Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and Mainz University f Applied Sciences.
      Instead f phts, the researchers first used 3D mdels f nearly 2,000 cuneifrm tablets, including arund50 frm a cllectin at MLU, achieving significantly mre dependable results than previus methds. Arund nemillin cuneifrm tablets still exist wrldwide. Hwever, they are heavily weathered and thus difticult tdecipher(破译), accrding t Hubert Mara, an assistant prfessr at MLU.
      His lab came up with the idea f develping an Al system that applies 3D mdels. The new system decipherscharacters better than previus methds, In principle, the Al system wrks alng the same lines as OCR sftware.which turns the images f writing and text int machine-readable text.
      “OCR usually wrks with phtgraphs. This is n prblem fr ink(墨水) n paper. In the case f cuneifrmtablets, hwever, things are mre difficult because the lighting cnditins greatly influence hw well certaincharacters can be identified,” explains Ernst Stötzner frm MLU.
      The team trained the new Ai sfiware and did succeed in recgnizing the symbis n the tabiers. “we weresurprised t find that ur system wrks s well with these tablets, which are heavily weathered," says Stötzner.
