      The prblem, accrding t Sam Sinclair, c-funder and directr f Bidiversify, is that bidiversity lacks ne simpatic standard f assessment and measurement. “The value f bidiversity is s cntext-dependent.” He gives the example f a nn-native UK species, which shuld be remved frm British wdlands but is prtected in its natural East Himalayan habitat. When it cmes t imprving a cmpany’s impact n bidiversity, there’s n ne-size-fits-all apprach. “The amunt f variatin between cmpanies is abslutely enrmus,” says Sinclair.
      There is a range f different reasns why a cmpany wuld want t imprve its relatinship with bidiversity. “Cmpanies are nw waking up t the fact that if they dn’t stp impacting the systems n which they depend, their businesses will cease t perate,” Sinclair explains. He pints t the wrld’s cttn market, 24 percent f which cmes frm an extremely climate-sensitive regin f India, as an example. “Frm a business viewpint, the lss f that market wuld be a majr prblem.” Hwever, Sinclair says that, frm his experience, a lt f businesses have taken the issue very seriusly and genuinely want t d the right thing.
      It’s unavidable, says Sinclair, that mistakes will be made ver the next few years. “The speed at which this area f suitability has prgressed is breathtaking, especially when yu cnsider that it tk us 15 years t get t where we are tday with carbn emissins (排放).       The findings cme frm a reprt by the Neurrights Fundatin in New Yrk. It lked at 30 cmpanies that sell neurtech devices r services directly t cnsumers with prmised benefits. “Our psitin is that brain data is at least as sensitive as persnal health data,” says Rafael Yuste, c-funder f the Neurrights Fundatin. “Why shuld peple be kay abut sharing brain data that can be decded (解码)?”
      The Neurrights Fundatin fund that 29 f the 30 cmpanies culd access custmers’ neural data withut prper sharing limits. Tw-thirds allwed fr the sharing f custmer data, almst anther third left this unclear, and just ne cmpany specifically said it wuldn’t. Furthermre, nly 12 f the 30 cmpanies gave custmers bth the right t withdraw permissin fr data prcessing and the right t request data deletin.
      Amng firms cntacted fr cmment, a few pushed back n the fundatin’s reprt. The Sweden-based cmpany Flw Neurscience tld New Scientist that it desn’t cllect any neural data. And Tre Azam, funder f the UK-based cmpany MyndPlay, said it never has access t r stres “brainwave data r any ther data” frm custmers. He added that the firm’s sftware runs lcally n devices withut sending any infrmatin t clud cmputing servers.
      The prblem is the absence f US gvernment regulatins, says Yuste, in cmparisn with the data privacy prtectins f the Eurpean Unin.
