Earlier this year, we learned frm lder adults that music serves as a pwerful cping (应对) mechanism and surce f escapism, with ther studies als nting its rle in prviding cmpaninship. This led us t questin whether music's impact n imaginatin culd be scientifically prven. Can music truly be gd cmpany?
Listening t music ften causes mental imagery—simulating scenaris (模拟场景) nt physically present. Research indicates that 77% f nline music listeners, 73% f lab participants, and 83% f cncert - gers experience such imagery. T explre further, we cnducted experiments using a scene frm the vide game Jurney, asking participants t imagine the jurney's cntinuatin. They rated their imaginatin's vividness, distance, and time traveled, with music generally enhancing these aspects cmpared t silence.
Music nt - nly shapes the vividness f participants' imaginatin but als the cntent f their imaginatins. Cmplex stries emerge, ften sharing similarities amng thse frm the same cultural backgrund. Heric music, fr instance, inspires uplifting themes. New events in these imagined stries match the patterns f musical tensin.
Our latest study specifically explred whether music gives rise t imagined scial interactins. We had 600 participants perfrm the imaginary jurney task with r withut Italian, Spanish, r Swedish flk music, with r withut lyrics (歌词), and amng native and nn - native speakers. Natural language prcessing revealed scial interactin as the dminant tpic in imagined jurneys, especially while listening t music, regardless f lyrics' cmprehensin r presence.
T visualize these imagined jurneys, we emplyed a generative AI system, Stable Diffusin, changing text descriptins int images. The results, supprted by human - cnducted analyses, shwed three times mre scial interactins in music - inspired jurneys.
Finally, when presenting these images t anther grup, they culd distinguish between music - inspired and silent - imagined cntent, but nly when expsed t the same music. This suggests a shared understanding, r "thery f mind," f what thers might imagine while listening t music. Our findings cllectively cnfirm that music can indeed be gd cmpany, shaping and enriching ur imaginatins.
28. Why did the researchers use a scene frm the vide game Jurney?
A. T explre hw music affects imaginatin.
B. T prve music's rle in a vide game.
C. T shw the ppularity f Jurney.
D. T test participants' creative skills.
29. What cnclusin can we draw frm Paragraph 3?
A. Music has little influence n stry cmplexity.
B. Lyrics are essential fr inspiring imaginative stries.
C. Musical tensin leads t negative events in imaginatin.
D. Cultural backgrund affects hw peple interpret heric music.
30. What was the main purpse f using Stable Diffusin in the experiment?
A. T replace human participants with AI cmpletely.
B. T test whether AI enjys listening t different types f music.
C. T cmpare human creativity against machine - generated cntent.
D. T visually represent participants' imagined jurneys fr analysis.

Brightly clred sngbirds called tanagers (唐纳雀) are s eye - catching because they have a hidden layer (层) f black r white beneath their bright feather (羽毛). Painters ften prepare paper with a layer f white t enhance the clrs they will eventually layer n. But it seems this is a mechanism that birds were using lng befre humans picked up paintbrushes.
Rsalyn Price - Waldman at Princetn University and her c - wrkers have fund that when sngbirds have bright red r yellw feather, they usually have white layers hidden underneath. When they have blue feather, they have black layers beneath.
T investigate why, they remved 72 feathers frm tanager samples in a cllectin at the Natural Histry Museum f Ls Angeles Cunty. Thrugh the systematic acquisitin f phtgraphic data illustrating the feathers against different backgrunds, the team measured hw their reflectance r absrptin f light changed, finding that the underlayers make the tp layers lk mre clrful.
The red and yellw clratin is created by pigments (色素), which selectively absrb light t make clr. This means the extra light frm the white belw makes them brighter, says Price - Waldman. But blue clr cmes frm tiny structures inside the feathers that reflect light in specific directins, rather than absrbing light t create the clr we see. Because f this, the light - absrbing black belw makes the blue lk brighter. "If yu have white underneath them, they lk a white - grey clr," says Price - Waldman.
Price - Waldman and her c - wrkers fund that, in sme cases, these layers f feathers generate sexual clr differences in tanagers. They als fund that this clr - bsting strategy is seen in many ther sngbirds.
"While a lt f research has already been dne t understand hw birds prduce such striking clrs, there is clearly a lt left t discver,'says Chns Cney at the University f Sheffield, UK.
32. Hw did the researchers check hw much light the feathers reflected r absrbed?
A. By bserving feathers in natural habitats.
B. By cmparing feathers f different species.
C. By cnducting chemical experiments n the feathers.
D. By taking pictures f the feathers n different backgrunds.
33. Why d black underlayers cntribute t making blue feathers lk brighter?
A. They help absrb extra light.B. They cntain special pigments.
C. They reflect light in specific ways.D. They increase feather thickness.
34. What can we infer abut tanagers frm the fifth paragraph?
A. Tanagers use the clr - bsting strategy best.
B. Feather layers help tanagers attract mates easily.
C. Tanagers have mre clrful feathers than ther sngbirds.
D. Male and female tanagers may have different feather clrs.
35. What is Chris Cney's attitude tward current research n bird clratin?
A. He believes the tpic has been fully explred.
B. He dubts the value f cntinuing such research.
C. He feels future studies will reveal mre mechanisms.
D. He is satisfied with the current level f understanding.
