I teach at a university. One f the “prblems” is that as the years pass, I get lder, but my students remain the
same age — 18 t 22. Early n, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were clse enugh in
age t speak the same language. But lately I have becme well aware that a language ship seems t have sailed, and
      I am nt n bard.
Let me make it clear by using an example: Recently, when I walked int my class, my students were chatting
happily with each ther. One f their cmments caught my ear: “Venm it t me.” I had n idea what “Venm”
meant, s I asked. The gd-natured students were happy t explain it t me, and in return I ndded with an
embarrassed expressin, as if I shuld have knwn better.
I went hme that evening, absrbed in that mment f incmprehensin (不理解). I am nt against change,
but I am uncmfrtable with change when its pace has me hanging n by my fingernails. If I were t awake frm a
five-year nap, I’d have n idea what peple were talking abut. I just wuldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness t explain their wrds t me is a great cmfrt, and I cngratulate myself n at least having
interest in what they’re talking abut, as well as n my ability — fr the mst part — t understand their
      explanatins.
      第 4页/共 12页

Yu frget t bring yur water bttle t the airprt, s yu buy a plastic ne and keep refilling it. Or yu rder
takeut fr dinner and save the black plastic cntainer t pack yur lunch the next day. Reuse is ne f the cre
rules f sustainability. But shuld yu be reusing these single-use plastics? Experts say n.
Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed (释放) micrplastics int yur envirnment. Thugh
studies have nt directly cmpared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say they are mre cncerned abut
single-use plastics because f hw they’re made. A single-use plastic water bttle sheds micr and nan plastics
int yur water when yu refill it, and a takeut cntainer r frzen meal tray sheds these particles int yur fd.
Chemical expsure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a micrwave, a dishwasher r even by placing ht
fd in a takeut cntainer. When heat is applied, mlecules mve faster, meaning it culd be easier fr sme f
these particles t make its way int yur fd.
Cncerns with chemicals and micrplastics primarily apply t fd, experts said, because yu are swallwing
them. Reusing single-use plastics like grcery bags is nt a majr cncern, they added. The mst imprtant thing
yu shuld d is avid heating yur plastic, experts agreed. “A pretty hard-and-fast rule is t never micrwave
plastic,” Enck said. “And there’s als a recmmendatin nt t put plastic int the dishwasher if it’s n a ht cycle.”
      28. Why des the authr list examples in the first paragraph?
      A. T lead int the tpic. B. T analyse the reasn.
C T prve the experts’ pinin. D. T intrduce the backgrund infrmatin.
      29. What can we learn frm the secnd paragraph?
      第 5页/共 12页
      A. Plastic bttles f gd quality are encuraged fr use.
      B. It is the chemicals in the materials that cause truble.
      C. High temperature makes little difference t takeut fd.
      D. Reusable plastic is mre dangerus than single-use plastic.
      30. Accrding t the passage, which f the fllwing harms human health mst?
      A. Heating fast fd in a glass bwl. B. Filling the grcery bag with meat.
      C. Packing cld drink with single-use plastics. D. Eating ht sup cntained in a single-use plastic bag.
      31. What is a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Stp Using Single-use Plastics B. Reusing Single-use Plastics Is Harmful
      C. Hw t Crrectly Use Single-use Plastics D. The Astnishing Fact f Single-use Plastics
      D
Learning a secnd language is far mre than adding a line t a résumé; it is repeatedly lifting weights inside
the head. A grwing number f neur-scientific studies shw that the mental gymnastics required t master new
grammar rules and thusands f unfamiliar wrds change the brain in three clear ways.
First, bilinguals (双语者) perfrm better than mnlinguals (单语者) n bth shrt-term and irregular
memry tests because every new vcabulary item frces the hippcampus (海马体) t create and refresh extra
neural (神经的) paths. In ne large study f 2,400 participants, peple wh spke tw languages recalled 18%
mre items n average than thse wh spke nly ne.
Secnd, handling tw language systems teaches the brain t suppress the language that is nt needed at the
mment, a skill that transfers naturally t any task that requires cncentratin. Researchers at the University f
Edinburgh fund that bilingual adults culd stay fcused n a bring cmputer task fr 12 minutes lnger than
matched mnlinguals, a gap equal t the increase prduced by three weekly sessins f mindfulness training.
Third, and perhaps mst surprising, language learning slws cgnitive (认知的) ageing. A 15-year study
published in Neurlgy fllwed 835 senirs fr fifteen years. Even after educatin and incme were cntrlled,
thse wh regularly used tw languages develped Alzheimer’s symptms (阿兹海默症状) 4.5 years later than
single-language speakers, suggesting that bilingualism builds a “cgnitive reserve” that keeps the ageing brain
      mre flexible.
The evidence, therefre, supprts a strng claim: acquiring an additinal language is ne f the cheapest,
safest and mst practical tls we have fr keeping the mind fit acrss the lifespan. Schls that cut language
classes t save mney may lse a simple but pwerful tl fr students’ lng-term brain health.
      第 6页/共 12页
      32. What can we learn abut bilinguals frm the secnd paragraph?
      A. Their shrt-term memry is naturally strnger.
      B. They are better at learning new vcabulary than mnlinguals.
C They may gain sme newly-develped neural paths in their brains.
      D. There is little bvius difference in their memry perfrmance.
      33. What main advantage d bilinguals have as shwn in the third paragraph?
      A. They are better at bring tasks.
      B. They can learn a new language faster.
      C. They are mre skilled in perating cmputer tasks.
      D. They have strnger cgnitive cntrl ability related t cncentratin.
      34. Why d bilingual senirs develp Alzheimer’s symptms later than mnlinguals?
      A. They usually have higher incme.
B They generally receive better educatin.
      C. Bilingualism allws them t slw dwn ageing.
      D. Speaking tw languages prtects the flexibility f the ageing brain.
      35. What is the authr’s attitude twards schls cutting language classes?
      A. Supprtive. B. Satisfied. C. Oppsing. D. Dubtful.
