French Impressinism
Duratin: 5 h 23 min Average rating: 4.6 Lecturer: Magda Michalska
The basics f Impressinism: capturing the mment and painting utdrs. But Impressinism is s much mre. Fr example, Degas didn't cnsider himself an impressinist. In his late years, Mnet painted water lilies that are 100% abstract. Did yu knw the fur female Impressinists? Or that, during the first decades f Impressinism, the entire grup was laughed at, but everything changed in the 1880s and 1890s thanks t ne very stubbrn art dealer.
Cubism 101: Picass and Braque
Duratin:1 h 31 min Average rating: 4.6 Lecturer: Janna Kaszubwska
As an art mvement f the 20th century, Cubism is difficult t understand and ften dismissed with a cmment “my five-year-ld culd paint that”. This curse intrduces yu t this art mvement, whse cre phase was just a few years. Yu will see in a nutshell hw Cubism came t be and then hw each artist tk it in anther directin. Yu will als understand why n ne's five-year-ld culd paint a Cubist painting.
Pst-Impressinism 101
Duratin: 48 min Average rating: 4.9 Lecturer: Magda Michalska
Impressinists painted the wrld the way they saw it by using unrealistic clrs and little shadwing. Pst-Impressinists carried further the Impressinist liberatin f expressin. Yet, the definitin f the time frame f the "mvement” was a bigger prblem. Fry determined it lasted frm 1880 t 1905. Hwever, Jhn Rewald argued that it had begun later, in 1886, with the last exhibitin f the Impressinists, and lasted until 1892, the beginning f Munch's Expressinism.

It’s 12km frm Pelegrinska n the Eastern tip f Hvar Island, acrss a 3km channel f water t and arund the cast f Palmizana island and I’m attempting t swim this distance. I’m taking part in UltraSwim 33.3, an pen-water event that challenges swimmers t cver the distance f an English Channel swim. This may seem an dd way t start an article abut writing. But I’ve lng tld students that writing a nvel is less like a flash f inspiratin and mre like swimming the Channel.
Training fr the UltraSwim meant gradually increasing my distance, strengthening my technique, and adapting t cld water. That is exactly like writing. Just as yu can build physical tirelessness, yu can build creative staying pwer. Fr swimming, that meant cld water adaptability and learning t eat prperly between swims. Fr writing, it means writing even when the wrds feel ff and learning t rewrite what desn’t wrk. Each week I saw my swim times imprve, just as my early drafts began t read less like ntes and mre like chapters.
This isn’t just my thery. Other authrs have fund similar inspiratin in swimming. Even Hemingway was knwn fr his lve f swimming. The pl at his Key West hme was mre than just a luxury; it was a place fr reflectin, writing and escape. He swam elsewhere, t: in Spain, in France, wherever life tk him.
There’s a mment, smewhere twards the end f a lng swim, when yur arms ache and every fibre f yur being wants ut. But yu keep ging and tuch the finish line. And then yu cllapse and say yu will never d that again. The funny thing is, the swimmers were, within minutes f receiving their medals, already talking abut “next year”— abut training mre seriusly and cming back strnger. That’s the part mst nn-writers dn’t understand: finishing the first draft f a nvel isn’t the end. It’s the beginning f editing, rewriting, restructuring. Yu’ve made it t the ther side, but the tide (潮汐) is already pulling yu back fr anther pass.
4. What’s the purpse f the first paragraph?
A. T describe a swimming rute.B. T explain a cmpetitin’s rules.
C. T cnnect tw seemingly different things.D. T shwcase an athletic achievement.
5. In what sense are swimming and writing similar accrding t the text?
A. Adaptability and gradual prgress are key.
B. They require sudden bursts f inspiratin.
C. Physical strength is irrelevant t creativity.
D. It takes a high level f fcus t d them well.
6. Why des the authr mentin Hemingway’s swimming pl in Key West?
A. T criticize his luxurius lifestyle.
B. T suggest sprty writers can easily succeed.
C. T highlight hw swimming fueled his writing.
D. T cmpare it with mdern swimming facilities.
7. What des the authr say abut finishing the first draft f a nvel?
A. It’s like winning a swimming medal.
B. It leads t the next phase f hard wrk.
C. It marks the final step f the writing prcess.
D. It’s less imprtant than the initial brainstrming.

The nly prblem: She culdn’t get that kind f educatin at her high schl in Katy, Texas.
Fr years, research has shwn a digital divide in schls’ teaching abut new technlgies. Fr example, rich suburban schls are mre likely t have cmputer science classes than prer urban and rural districts.
A free summer camp AI4All at Princetn University wanted t help clse the gap: it invited abut 30 high schlers frm lw-incme families t spend three weeks living n campus, learning abut the math that pwers generative AI and wrk tgether with Princetn teachers t build AI slutins fr real-wrld issues: frm drne (无人机)-based wildfire mnitring t medical prblem-slving.
At Princetn, campers wrked n AI slutins t real-life challenges in medicine, rbtics and envirnmental science. On a mid-July afternn, AI4All campers sat in a grup inside a lecture hall and listened clsely t Princetn prfessr Jaime Fernández Fisac as he explained hw AI culd help drnes fly better. The cncepts were very difficult, but the high schlers were fllwing alng.
Elsharkawy attended the camp and said the experience changed her idea f AI. She said the AI4All prgram “definitely helps with the digital divide.” Ryan Chu, frm Califrnia, called the camp a “small but impactful” step and wanted it expanded.
Public K-12 teachers see bth benefits and risks in AI, accrding t a survey. A majrity f thse surveyed believe AI will imprve accessibility f learning materials fr students with disabilities. Still, 40% f them say they dn’t use AI at all. And mre than half f the 40% believe weekly use f AI by students wuld decrease their ability t think independently and critically.

11. What is the attitude f mst teachers surveyed twards AI?
A. Critical.B. Appreciative.C. Objective.D. Unclear.

Fishing is a way f life fr peple wh live n the flating villages f Cambdia’s Tnle Sap Lake. These Sutheast Asians depend n fish in the lake. But thse fish are in truble.

Chevalier was part f a team that shared thse data in Science f the Ttal Envirnment. “If the tendency cntinues,” he says, “there will be nthing fr peple there t eat any mre.”
Dams (大坝) are a big prblem, Chevalier says. These structures break up river systems. With grwing human ppulatins, verfishing becmes mre f a threat. As peple keep fishing, the share f fish left there culd decrease even mre. Pllutin threatens freshwater ecsystems, t. Peple have als been changing the land in ways that damages the habitat in lakes and streams. And then there’s a grwing number f nn-native harmful species. Lastly, glbal warming has been causing harm by stressing bth fish and their fd surces.
Still, the situatin isn’t hpeless. Researchers are wrking t identify the mst effective ways t change that. One way is t remve utdated r ill-placed dams. The largest such U. S. prject tk dwn fur dams frm the lwer Klamath River. Sn after, thusands f salmn (鲑鱼) were swimming upstream thrugh this newly pened stretch. Elsewhere, dam peratrs can reduce harm by changing river flws. Limiting flw t much can cause dwnstream areas t dry up. Smarter dam placement wuld als help.
“Restring habitat can help if dne right. But this wrk csts mney. And it’s hard t restre entire streams,” Jhn Gray, a fish bilgist, says. In 2022, scientists tried reppulating sme fish species at Tnle Sap Lake. Hwever, nearly half the fish were caught less than three mnths later.
With each success r failure, scientists learn hw better t deal with these big prblems. Teens can get invlved. Many cnservatin grups welcme help frm peple f any age.

14. What des Gray think f restring habitat?
A. It has limited benefits.B. It is useless.
C. It will bring wrse results.D. It is mney-saving.
