All f that has led t a small experiment. In an effrt t keep a little petry in my life lng after Natinal Petry Mnth had passed, I reslved t read at least ne pem a day after reading thrugh the newspaper ver breakfast. Thanks t tw digital services that deliver petry right t my email inbx, it’s been an easy reslutin t keep.
Many public radi listeners are familiar with The Writer’s Almanac, a five-minute bradcast hsted by Garrisn Keillr that airs n lts f statins arund the cuntry. Each day’s editin includes a handful f facts abut literary anniversaries (周年纪念) , alng with a shrt pem that Keillr recites. Fans can als have the text f each episde emailed t them every day, alng with a link t the bradcast versin.
The Academy f American Pets has its wn pem-day feature, called “Pem-a-Day”. Launched during Natinal Petry Mnth in 2006, Pem-a-Day highlights new and previusly unpublished pems by cntemprary pets n weekdays and classic pems n weekends.
Since subscribing t bth services last April, I’ve enjyed receiving pems each mrning. Reading at least ne pem a day has als been like an intellectual vitamin (维生素) , giving me a brief taste f literature even n busy days. Last April, I wndered if I culd remind myself t read a pem each mrning. Nw, deep in summer, I wnder if I culd ever d withut it.

Earlier this year, the Pew Research Center released data shwing that 55% f peple get their news frm scial media. In a fllw-up study, they fund that these peple are mre likely t see misinfrmatin. When that misinfrmatin is abut science, it cntributes t the grwing mistrust individuals have twards science. We, as scientists, need t d ur best t crrect this misinfrmatin. Hwever, we are mstly stuck behind ur lab desks due t the pressure t publish papers.
When we ccasinally d apprach the public, we ften dn't d a great jb cmmunicating in ways nnscientists can understand. Mst f us have nt been trained t cmmunicate r teach the lay audience. We use cmplicated wrds and phrases and a lt f jargn (术语) . We may fcus n tiny details that the general public desn't need t understand. Other times we frget that the peple we are talking t are human, with cmplicated lives and emtins. Just like us. They deserve ur attentin and respect. This causes the public t rely n ther surces fr their scientific infrmatin, ften the afrementined scial media.
Tday we are seeing the cnsequences f this. Large percentages f peple believe that infectius diseases are nt real and that vaccines (疫苗) are dangerus. This distrust in science has gne frm a mere incnvenience t nw being an issue that endangers public health and safety. Distrust in science als endangers ur funding. When the public puts less value in science, there is less public supprt fr tax dllars ging t funding fr research.
S, what can we d t address these issues? Peple trust thse they knw and interact with. We need t interact with the public mre. During these interactins, we shuld chse ur wrds carefully. We need t cut ut as much jargn as pssible. Smetimes it may be necessary, but then we must be clear and explain the terms we use. T help peple understand and remember cncepts, we can use stries and images t illustrate ur main pints. Mst peple can remember a stry smene tld, r a striking image shared.
8. What cncern des the authr raise based n the Pew study?
A. Declining public curisity abut science.B. Spread f false scientific infrmatin.
C. Scientists’ limited time fr lab wrk.D. Difficulty in publishing research.
9. What des the underlined wrd “lay” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Unprfessinal.B. Overnumbered.
C. Misinfrmed.D. Undereducated.
10. What results frm the public's disbelief in science?
A. Increased public supprt fr research funding.
B. Reduced reality f infectius diseases.
C. An increased risk fr wellness threats.
D. Incnvenient access t scientific findings.
11. What des the authr urge scientists t fcus n?
A. Mre public talks withut altering jargn.B. Releasing mre scientific wrk.
C. Aviding scial media platfrms.D. Making science mre understandable.

In Califrnia, thusands f miles f fiber-ptic cables (光纤电缆) criss-crss the state, prviding peple with the Internet. But these undergrund cables can als have a surprising secndary functin: They can sense and measure earthquakes. In a new study led by Prfessr Zhngwen Zhan, researchers used a sectin f fiber-ptic cable t measure cmplex details f a magnitude 6 earthquake, in a methd called distributed acustic sensing (DAS) .
T use a fiber-ptic cable as a seismmeter (地震仪) , special devices are statined at ne end f the cable, shting light rays thrugh the lng, thin glass strands (束) that make up the cable’s cre. The glass has tiny imperfectins that reflect back an extremely small part f the light t the surce, where it is recrded. Seismic waves mving thrugh the grund cause the cable t shake slightly, which changes the travel time f light alng the fiber-ptic cable. Thus, the imperfectins act like thusands f individual seismmeters that allw seismlgists t bserve the mtin f seismic waves.
Prfessr Zhan and his team examined the light signatures traveling thrugh a stretch f fiber-ptic cable lcated in the Eastern Sierra Nevada during the 2021 Antelpe Valley magnitude 6 earthquake, and discvered that the magnitude 6 earthquake was made up f fur sub-events that culd nt be detected by a cnventinal seismic netwrk. Wrking with Nadia Lapusta’s labratry, the team was able t create an accurate mdel f the earthquake, displaying the exact timing and lcatins f the sub-events n the fault regin.
“Using fiber-ptic cable as a series f seismmeters reveals aspects f earthquake physics that have lng been assumed but difficult t image,” says Zhan. “Imagine yur everyday backyard telescpe. Yu can see Jupiter, but yu prbably can't see its mns r any details. With a really pwerful telescpe, yu can see the fine details f the planet and mn surfaces. Our technlgy is like a pwerful telescpe fr earthquakes.”
The findings suggest that access t mre cables wuld enable imprved understanding f earthquake physics and ultimately better earthquake early-warning systems. “If we can get brader cverage t measure seismic activity, we can cmpletely change hw we study earthquakes and prvide mre advance warning,” says Zhan.
12. What makes the fiber-ptic cable crucial t the DAS methd?
A. The intensity f light rays.B. Special devices at ne end.
C. The length f the cable's cre.D. Imperfectins in glass strands.
13. Hw were the fur sub-events detected?
A. By analyzing light signatures.B. By examining the fault regin.
C. By develping a seismic netwrk.D. By cperating with Nadia Lapusta’s labratry.
14. Why des Prfessr Zhan mentin “telescpe” in paragraph 4?
A. T cmpare different measurement tls.
B. T describe the appearance f fiber-ptic cables.
C. T highlight DAS's sharp bservatinal ability.
D. T stress the imprtance f traditinal seismmeters.
15. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Advances in Earthquake Early-Warning Systems.
B. New Discveries Abut Earthquake Physics.
C. Detecting Earthquakes via Fiber-Optic Cables.
D. Transfrming Fiber-Optic Cables Thrugh DAS.

I vividly remember the day when, as a nine-year-ld, I participated in a primary schl sing-alng. While everyne else sang the main tune, I autmatically harmnized (以和声唱) , but the sund I sang was ut f tune with everyne else. At that mment, I suddenly saw my classmates lking at me, and I felt embarrassed. That experience left a lasting impact. I prmised myself that I wuld never sing in public again, but it didn't stp there. My fear f embarrassment grew s strng that I began t clse myself ff frm sharing anything — my thughts, my feelings, and my ideas — with thers.
Thrughut my primary and high schl years, I remained quiet. When teachers asked questins in class, I stayed silent, t afraid f being wrng, thugh I knew the answers t the questins. Even when I had ideas t cntribute t grup discussins, I held back. I wanted t speak up, but the fear f embarrassment always utweighed my desire t be heard.
I had built a cage arund my wn ptential, letting fear and self-dubt cntrl my life. But ver time, I realized that living in this self-made prisn was far mre painful than the risk f stepping utside f it. I was in a place that an authr described well when she said, “Then the day came when the risk it tk t remain tightly clsed in a bud (花蕾) became mre painful than the risk t blm.”
That realizatin sparked (引发) smething within me, but it tk anther small mment t set the change in mtin. During my first year f cllege, I was chatting with a friend in a quiet café, talking abut life, dreams, and fears. I watched her speak s penly and cnfidently abut her experiences and thughts. It amazed me hw free she was in expressing herself, unafraid f what thers might think. She shared a stry abut an art prject she was wrking n. She wasn't afraid t be herself and it struck me deeply.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
At that mment, I decided t change and began with small steps.
